  • Blended Low Heat type cement is ground granulated blast furnace slag and fly ash mixed ternary with ordinary portland cement. From the viewpoint of X-ray patterns of domestic LHC, the main components of cement such as $C_2$S, $C_3$A, $C_3$S are considerably reduced. Therefore the heat evolution of LHC paste is 42cal/g lower than of OPC paste. At early age, the compressive strength development of LHC concrete is delayed, but the slump loss ratio of fresh concrete is reduced more than 20% with elapsed time. The penetrability of LHC is lower than that of OPC by 1/7.8 with the penetrability of chloride ion into the concrete until the age of 120 days. And the PD Index value of LHC is 0.44$\times$10-6 $\textrm{cm}^2$/s, which indicates only 39.3% of OPC. From the Mercury Intrusion Porosimetry test of cement past, we know that the pore size of LHC is more dense than that of OPC by production of C-S-H.

  • In this study, catechol-functionalized chitosan (Cat-Chit), a well-known bioinspired polymer that imitates the basic structures and functions of living organisms and biological materials in nature, was synthesized and combined with cement mortar in various proportions. The compressive strength, tensile strength, drying shrinkage, accelerated carbonation depth, and chloride-ion penetrability of these mixes were then evaluated. In the ultraviolet-visible spectra, a maximum absorption peak appeared at 280 nm, corresponding to catechol conjugation. The sample containing 7.5% Cat-Chit polymer in water (CPW) exhibited the highest compressive strength, and its 28-day compressive strength was ~20.2% higher than that of a control sample with no added polymer. The tensile strength of the samples containing 5% or more CPW was ~2.3-11.5% higher than that of the control sample. Additionally, all the Cat-Chit polymer mixtures exhibited lower carbonation depths than compared to the control sample. The total charge passing through the samples decreased as the amount of CPW increased. Thus, incorporating this polymer effectively improved the mechanical properties, carbonation resistance, and chloride-ion penetration resistance of cement mortar.

  • Coal combustion by-product (CCB) bottom ash, obtained from burning of pulverized coal, has physical properties which are similar to that of natural sand with particle sizes ranging from fine gravel to fine sand. Several studies have been completed to utilize pulverized coal combustion (PCC) bottom ash as a partial or full replacement of fine aggregate in cement concrete products. The objectives of this study were to develop air-entrained concrete composites using PCC bottom ash from burning of Illinois coal and to demonstrate the use of these composites on real-world projects. The results obtained show that the compressive, splitting-tensile, and flexural strengths of concrete composites is slightly lower than that of conventional concrete are early curing ages. However, after 60 days of curing, the strength of concrete composites is either equal to or slightly higher than that of an equivalent conventional concrete. The concrete composites showed lower resistance to chloride ion penetrability than that of an equivalent conventional concrete at early curing ages. However, after 28 days of curing, concrete composites showed better resistance to chloride ion penetrability compared to that of an equivalent conventional concrete.

  • This study investigates fundamental properties of recycled aggregate concrete which incorporated 100% recycled coarse aggregate and various amount of recycled fine aggregate. In addition, for the purpose of the improvement of long term strength and durability, a part of cement was replaced with fly ash. Compressive strength and resistance to chloride ion penetration and carbonation were investigated. When the coarse aggregate was completely replaced with the recycled the replacement ratio of the fine aggregate with the recycled was recommended to be limited below 60% in the consideration of strength. The strength of the steam-cured specimen was very comparable to the wet-cured at 28 days. As fly ash content increased the resistance to chloride ion penetration was increased. The chloride ion penetrability based on the charge passed was found to be low at 21 days and very low at 56 days, respectively. Carbonation depth and carbonation velocity coefficient increased as the fly ash content increased and the relationship between the carbonation depth and recycled fine aggregate replacement ratio was not clear. Up to 28days, however, the measured carbonation depth was mostly less than 10mm which could be considered as low.

  • Presented in the paper are findings of a project that examined the effect of slag grade and cement source on the performance of concrete mixtures. Slag cement contents were 20, 40, and 60 percent of the total cementitious material content. Two grades of slag cement were examined (Gr. 100 and Gr. 120) along with two sources of Type I cement. Compressive strength, durability, and permeability were measured. The results showed that the cement source affected the early age strength of the mixtures. At 28 days of age, mixtures containing Gr. 120 slag cement had higher compressive strengths than mixtures containing Gr. 100 slag cement, but by 90 days of age, the trend reversed. As for the chloride ion penetrability, mixtures cast with Gr. 100 slag cement passed fewer coulombs at 28 and 90 days of age than similar mixtures containing Gr. 120 slag. Mixtures containing Gr. 120 slag had the greatest durability factors.

  • In this study, polyethylene glycol (PEG) and polyacrylamide (PAM) have been used as self-curing agents to produce self-curing concrete (SC). Compressive strength, ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV), bulk electrical resistivity, chloride ion penetrability, water permeability, and main microstructural characteristics were examined under different curing regimes, and compared to those of the control concrete mixture with no self-curing agents. One batch of a control mixture and one batch of a SC mixture were air-cured in the lab to act as non-water-cured samples. The water curing regimes for the control mixture included continuous water curing for 3, 7, and 28 days and periodical moist curing using wetted burlap for 3 and 7 days. Curing regimes for the SC mixtures included 3 days of water curing and periodical moist curing for 3 and 7 days. SC mixtures showed better microstructure development and durability performance than those of the air-cured control mixture. A short water curing period of 3 days significantly improved the performance of the SC mixtures similar to that of the control mixture that was water cured for 28 days. SC concrete represents a step towards sustainable construction due to its lower water demand needed for curing and hence can preserve the limited water resources in many parts of the world.

  • Effects of polypropylene (PP) fibers, steel fibers (SF) and hybrid on the properties of highstrength fiber reinforced self-consolidating concrete (HSFR-SCC) under different volume contents are investigated in this study. Comprehensive laboratory tests were conducted in order to evaluate both fresh and hardened properties of HSFR-SCC. Test results indicated that the fiber types and fiber contents greatly influenced concrete workability but it is possible to achieve self consolidating properties while adding the fiber types in concrete mixtures. Compressive strength, dynamic modulus of elasticity, and rigidity of concrete were affected by the addition as well as volume fraction of PP fibers. However, the properties of concrete were improved by the incorporation of SF. Splitting tensile and flexural strengths of concrete became increasingly less influenced by the inclusion of PP fibers and increasingly more influenced by the addition of SF. Besides, the inclusion of PP fibers resulted in the better efficiency in the improvement of toughness than SF. Furthermore, the inclusion of fibers did not have significant effect on the durability of the concrete. Results of electrical resistivity, chloride ion penetration and ultrasonic pulse velocity tests confirmed that HSFR-SCC had enough endurance against deterioration, lower chloride ion penetrability and minimum reinforcement corrosion rate.

  • PURPOSES : Infiltration of moisture, polluted material, and deicer into concrete, accompanied by freeze and thaw can cause significant deterioration of concrete pavement. In order to protect concrete from deterioration, it is necessary to prevent the infiltration of these concrete external materials. The moisture-repellent agent, which is a surface treatment and maintenance material added to concrete structures to render them water resistant, has advantages such as prevention of water infiltration and security against air permeation. Nano-coat, which is referred to as silicon hydride, is typically used as a moisture-repellent agent. Therefore, in this study, an attempt is made to use penetration-type Nano-coat as an alternative in order to evaluate its applicability through environmental resistance tests. METHODS : This study aimed to evaluate the applicability of penetration-type Nano-coat, which can provide water repellency to concrete, in concrete pavements, through various environmental resistance tests such as freezing and thawing resistance, chloride ion penetration resistance, and surface scaling resistance tests. The applicability of penetration-type Nano-coat was demonstrated based on the specification of KS F 2711, KS F 2456, and ASTM C 672. RESULTS :In the case of penetration-type Nano-coat applied on sound concrete, an increase in concrete durability was demonstrated by the negligible chloride ion penetrability and the absence of scaling, as revealed by visual observation of the surface, after 50 cycles of scaling resistance test. In addition, test result of the application of penetration-type Nano-coat on deteriorated concrete established that concrete surface pretreated by grinding provided improved durability than non-treated concrete. CONCLUSIONS :This study indicates that penetration-type Nano-coat is applicable as an effective alternative, to increase the durability of concrete structures. In addition, it was known that pretreatment of deteriorated concrete surface, such as grinding, is required to improve the long-term performance of concrete pavement.

  • This paper evaluates the mechanical properties and durability of cement matrix blended with mineral admixtures and ferronickel slag(FNS) powder which is an industrial b y-product during ferronickel smelting process. The hydration heat, pore structure, compressive strength, length change, rapid chloride penetration test(RCPT), and freezing and thawing resistance of ternary blended cement matrix were investigated and compared with ordinary portland cement matrix. The result showed that the compressive strength of ternary blended cement matrix using ferronickel slag powder and mineral mixture was low in strength compared to the reference concrete, but recovered to a certain extent by using alkali activator. Length change of cement mortar using FNS powder have shown less shrinkage occurs than the reference specimen. In addition, irrespective of using the alkali-activators, all ternary mix are indicative of the 'very low' range for chloride ion penetrability according to the ASTM C 1202, and the freeze-thaw resistance also showed excellent results.
