Synthesis and Exchange Properties of Sulfonated Poly(phenylene sulfide) with Alkali Metal Ions in Organic Solvents

  • Sulfonated poly(phenylene sulfide) (SPPS) polymers were prepared by sulfonation of poly[methyl[4-(phenylthio) phenyl]sulfonium trifluoromethanesulfonate] (PPST) with fumic sulfonic acid (10% $SO_3-H_2SO_4$) and demethylation with aqueous NaOH solution. The equilibrium constants of ion exchange reactions between alkali metal cations ($Li^+,\;Na^+,\;and\;K^+$) and SPPS ion exchanger in organic solvents such as tetrahydrofuran (THF) and dioxane were measured. The equilibrium constants of ion exchange reactions increased as the polarity of the solvent increased, and the reaction temperature decreased. The equilibrium constants of the ion exchange reaction ($K_{eq}$) also increased in the order of $Li^+,\;Na^+,\;and\;K^+$. To elucidate the spontaneity of the exchange reaction in organic solvents, the enthalpy, entropy, and Gibbs free energy were calculated. The enthalpy of reaction ranged from -0.88 to -1.33 kcal/mol, entropy ranged from 1.42 to 4.41 cal/Kmol, and Gibbs free energy ranged from -1.03 to -2.55 kcal/mol. Therefore, the exchange reactions were spontaneous because the Gibbs free energies were negative. The SPPS ion exchanger and alkali metal ion bounding each other produced good ion exchange capability in organic solvents.

초저이온농도에서 이온교환수지에 의한 실리카제거 평형특성 (Equilibrium Property of Ion Exchange Resin for Silica Removal at Ultralow Concentration)

  • Ion exchange resin was used to remove silica ion at ultralow concentration. The effects of temperature, type of ion exchange resin and single/mixed-resin systems on removal efficiency were estimated. As temperature increased, the slope of concentration profile became stiff, and the equilibrium concentration was higher. In the single resin system, the removal of silica was continued up to 400 min, but the silica concentration was recovered to initial concentration after 400 min due to the effect of dissolved $CO_2$. In the mixed-resin system it took about 600 min to reach equilibrium. Because of faster cation exchange reaction than anion exchange reaction, the effect of $CO_2$ could be removed. Based on the experimental results carried out in the mixed-resin system, the selectivity coefficients of silica ion for each ion exchange resin were calculated at some specific temperatures. The temperature dependency of the selectivity coefficient was expressed by the equation of Kraus-Raridon type.

  • $K^{+}-{\beta}^{{\prime}{\prime}}$-alumina pellet를 이온교환 매체인 ammonium nitrate 수용액과 용융염으로 각각 이온교환하여, 고온형 PEMFC 전해질로 기대되는 무기소재인 $NH_4{^+}-{\beta}^{{\prime}{\prime}}$-alumina를 제조하였다. 고압반응기의 실험조건으로 온도는 130, 150, 170, $200^{\circ}C$ 에서, 시간은 2 h 간격으로 2 h에서 8 h까지 수열반응을 실시하였으며 이 때의 수용액의 농도는 5 M과 10 M을 사용하였다. 또한 $200^{\circ}C$의 가열기 위에서 ammonium nitrate를 완전히 녹여 용융염 상태의 ammonium nitrate를 이용하여 2 h 간격으로 2 h에서 8 h까지 이온교환을 실시하였다. 이온교환반응의 반복횟수에 따른 영향을 알아보기 위하여 재이온교환반응을 3차까지 반복해서 실험하였다. 이후 이온교환 된 $NH_4{^+}-{\beta}^{{\prime}{\prime}}$-alumina 구조체의 상 안정성, 이온교환율을 각각 X선 회절기(Rigaku Rint 2000, Japan)와 ICP-AES (Spectro, Modular EOP)를 사용하여 분석하였다.

  • The electrical properties of bulk galsses in the system Na$_{2}$O-CaO-Al$_{2}$O$_{3}$-B$_{2}$O$_{3}$-SiO$_{2}$ containing 20 to 30mol% sodium which have been subjected to a sodium .tautm. silver ion exchange reaction for 24, 36 and 48 hrs. were analysed by impedance spectroscopy method. Ion exchanged glasses exhibit activation energy values lower than those of the untreated ones. The electrical conductivity increase with sodium content and ion exchanging time. In this experiment the electrical conductivity exhibits a manximum value of 1.78*10$^{-4}$ S/cm at 200.deg. C which contains 30mol% sodium and subjects ion exchange reaction for 48hrs.

  • 정사면체 구조를 갖는 $SpCuCl_2$와 수은(II) 이온 및 수은 금속간의 금속 교환반응의 속도론적인 연구를 순환 전압전류법과 자외 가시선 분광법을 사용하여 실험하였다. 수은(II) 이온 및 수은 금속과$SpCuCl_2$와의 교환 반응은 유사일차속도식을 따른다. 교환반응의 속도상수와 활성화 계수들의 값을 구하고 이들을 정리하여 나타내었다. 이러한 실험결과들로부터 Sp 배위자에 동시에 결합되어 있는 구리와 수은의 이핵 착물에서 구리와 질소간의 결합이 끊어지는 과정이 교환반응의 속도결정단계임을 알 수 있다.

The Nature of Acid-Catalyzed Acetalization Reaction of 1,2-Propylene Glycol and Acetaldehyde

  • We investigated catalytic activity of ion-exchange resins in acetalization of 1,2-propylene glycol with acetaldehyde. The impacts of reaction variables, such as temperature, reaction time, catalyst loading and feedstock composition, on the conversion of 1,2-propylene glycol were measured. The life of the catalyst was also studied. Furthermore, the reaction kinetics of 1,2-propylene glycol acetalization was studied. It was found that reaction rate followed the first-order kinetics to acetaldehyde and 1,2-propylene glycol, respectively. Therefore, overall acetalization reaction should follow the second-order reaction kinetics, expressed as. NON DESTRUCTIVE APPLICATION OF RADIOACTIVE TRACER TECHNIQUE FOR CHARACTERIZATION OF INDUSTRIAL GRADE ANION EXCHANGE RESINS INDION GS-300 AND INDION-860

  • The paper deals with the application of radio isotopic non-destructive technique in the characterization of two industrial grade anion exchange resins Indion GS-300 and Indion-860. For the characterization of the two resins, $^{131}I$ and $^{82}Br$ were used as tracer isotopes to trace the kinetics of iodide and bromide ion-isotopic exchange reactions. It was observed that the values of specific reaction rate ($min^{-1}$), amount of iodide ion exchanged (mmol), initial rate of iodide ion exchange (mmol/min) and log $K_d$ were calculated as 0.328, 0.577, 0.189 and 19.7 respectively for Indion GS-300 resin, which was higher than the respective values of 0.180, 0.386, 0.070 and 17.0 calculated for Indion-860 resins when measured under identical experimental conditions. Also at a constant temperature of $40.0^{\circ}C$, as the concentration of labeled iodide ion solution increases 0.001 M to 0.004 M, the percentage of iodide ions exchanged increases from 75.16 % to 78.36 % for Indion GS-300 resins, which was higher than the increases from 49.65 % to 52.36 % compared to that obtained for Indion-860 resins. The overall results indicate that under identical experimental conditions, Indion GS-300 resins show superior performance over Indion-860 resins.

Biosorption of lead by Laminaria japonica

  • Characteristics of biosorption of lead by marine algae, Laminaria japonica, were examined. The biosorption capacity of lead by L. japonica was achieved up to 30% of its own weight and proportional to the initial lead concentration. However, the opposite result was shown in different initial weight of biomass. Ion exchange reaction between lead ions and calcium ions was observed on lead biosorption with Ca-Ioaded biomass. Stoichiometric coefficient, which can represent the exchange ratio between metal ions and protons during elution process, was determined as 1.39. Therefore, it was concluded that the reaction between lead ions already attached in biomass and protons in bulk solution was not fully stoichiometric ion exchange relation at elution process.

  • 90% ethanol solution에서 benzyl chloride와 radioactive chloride($^{36}Cl^-$)와의 exchange를 反應速度論的으로 硏究하였으며 그 結果로 交換反應은 typical bimolecular reaction임을 알았고 그 activation parameter들은 각기 다음과 같았다. ${\Delta}H^{\neq}$= 18.50 Kcal ${\Delta}S^{\neq}$= -22.09 e.u. 특히 本實驗 缺課와 다른 實驗結果를 綜合討論함으로써 反應速度는 attacking anion의 nuclephilic ability에 크게 관계 됨을 입증할 수 있었으며 또한 exchange reaction에 있어서 halide들의 reactivity의 순서는 bond dissociation energy의 差로써 보다는 오히려 Swain의 nucleophilic parameter(n)로써 설명함이 더욱 타당함을 알았다.

음이온 선택도 특성 (Characteristics of Selectivity in Anion Exchanges)

  • 이온교환은 액체상 이온과 고체상 이온간의 화학반응이며 연수 및 탈염공정, 특정물질의 제거 및 회수, 토양을 통한 이온성 물질의 이동에서 널리 이용되고 있다. 이온 선택도는 원자가가 높을수록, 수화반경이 작을수록 증가한다. 본 연구는 평형 이온교환에서 결정된 이온 선택도가 칼럼 이온교환에 적용되는 가를 조사하였다. 음이온 교환수지에 대한 이온 선택도 순서는 OH/sup -/ < F/sup -/ < HCO/sup -/ < Cl/sup -/ < Br/sup -/ ≤ NO₃/sup -/ < SO₄/sup 2-/ 이였으며, 음이온 칼럼교환에서도 동일하였다. 또한 바탕 양이온의 전하가 낮을수록 이온교환이 빠르게 진행됨을 알 수 있었다.
