연료전지용 불소화 폴리벤즈이미다졸 양성자 교환 멤브레인 합성 및 특성평가 (Synthesis and Characterization of Fluorinated Polybenzimidazole Proton Exchange Membranes for Fuel Cell)

  • A fluorinated polybenzimidazole (FPBI) was synthesized from 3,3-diaminobenzidine (DAB) of tetraamine, 2,2-bis(4-carboxyphenyl)hexafluoropropane of aromatic biscarboxylic acid, and 4,4-sulfonyldibenzoic acid of aromatic biscarboxylic acid in polyphosphoric acid (PPA). A FPBI was easily cast and made into clear films. The structure of condensation polymers and corresponding membranes were analyzed using GPC (gel permeation chromatography), $^1H$-NMR ($^1H$ nuclear magnetic resonance) and FT-IR (fourier transform infrared). TGA (thermogravimetric analysis) analysis showed that the prepared membranes were thermally stable, so that elevated temperature fuel cell operation would be possible. The proton conductivity of the FPBI membranes increased with increasing temperatures in the polymer. A FPBI membrane has a maximum ion conductivity of 45 mS/cm at $90^{\circ}C$ and 100% relative humidity.

천지지체를 사용한 가교화된 폴리비닐벤질클로라이드 음이온교환 복합막의 제조와 전기투석을 이용한 이온 제거 특성연구 (Preparation of Crosslinked Polyvinylbenzylchloride Anion Exchange Composite Membranes using Fabric Substrates and Their Electrodialysis Application for Ion Removal)

  • 본 연구에서는 지하수 내 질산성 질소 이온을 제거하기 위해 전기투석 공정에 적용가능한 음이온교환 복합막을 제조하였다. 막의 제조를 위해 기본 단량체로 vinyl benzylchloride (VBC)와 styrene (ST), 가교제로 divinylbenzene (DVB), 그리고 개시제 $\alpha,\alpha$-azobis(isobutyronitrile) (AIBN)으로 이루어진 단량체 용액에 구조적으로 단단한 fabric을 함침한 후 열중합 가교시켜 복합막을 생성한 다음 trimethylamine (TMA)과 acetone을 이용해 음이온 교환기($-N^+(CH_3)_3$)를 함유하는 복합막을 제조하였다. 제조한 아민화 완료된 poly(VBC-ST-DVB)/fabric 복합막들의 특성을 알아보고자 막의 함수율, 이온교환 용량(IEC) 및 전기저항을 아스톰사의 상용화 음이온교환막(AMX)과 비교 조사하였다. 그 결과 제조된 막들은 아스톰사의 AMX보다 높은 IEC와 낮은 전기저항 특성을 나타냈다. 또한 제조된 음이온막을 전기투석장치에 설치하여 $NaNO_3$, $MgSO_4$, NaF (각각 100 mg/L) 등의 이온제거 실험을 60분 수행한 결과 $NaNO_3$뿐만 아니라 $MgSO_4$, NaF 이온 등도 1 mg/L 이하까지 잘 제거되었음을 확인할 수 있었으며, 전기투석 15분 전후로 하여 이온전도도값의 변화가 거의 없는 것으로 보아 전기투석 특성을 실험한 결과 전기투석 약 15분 이내에 이온이 제거되었음을 확인할 수 있었다.

이온교환막의 균질/비균질 표면 형상에 따른 전기 와류 가시화 및 전기적 특성 분석 (Visualization and Electrical Response of Electroconvective Vortices on the Surface of Homo/Heterogeneous Ion Exchange Membranes)

  • The electromembrane process, which has advantages such as scalability, sustainability, and eco-friendliness, is used in renewable energy fields such as fuel cells and reverse electrodialysis power generation. Most of the research to visualize the internal flow in the electromembrane process has mainly been conducted on heterogeneous ion exchange membranes, because of the non-uniform swelling characteristics of the homogeneous membrane. In this study, we successfully visualize the electro-convective vortices near the Nafion homogeneous membrane in PDMS-based microfluidic devices. To reinforce the mechanical rigidity and minimize the non-uniform swelling characteristics of the homogeneous membrane, a newly developed swelling supporter was additionally adapted to the Nafion membrane. Thus, a clear image of electroconvective vortices near the Nafion membrane could be obtained and visualized. As a result, we observed that the heterogeneous membrane has relatively stronger electroconvective vortices compared to the Nafion homogeneous membranes. Regarding electrical response, the Nafion membrane has a higher limiting current and less overlimiting current compared to the heterogeneous membrane. Based on our visualization, it is assumed that the heterogeneous membrane has more activated electroconvective vortices, which lower electrical resistance in the overlimiting current regime. We anticipate that this work can contribute to the fundamental understanding of the ion transport characteristics depending on the homogeneity of ion exchange membranes.

Treatment of organic dye solutions by electrodialysis

  • Laboratory tests were performed to determine the efficiency of dye solution desalination by electrodialysis. The study involved anionic dye and mineral salt recovery by obtaining two streams from a salt and dye mixture - dye-rich solution and salt solution. A standard anion-exchange and cation-exchange membranes or monovalent selective anion-exchange membranes were used in the ED stack. It was found that the separation efficiency was strongly dependent on the dye molecular weight. The best results for standard ion-exchange membranes were achieved for the desalination of Direct Black solution. Furthermore, the obtained results implied that the application of monovalent selective anion-exchange membranes improved the recovery of dye and salt solutions - the dye concentration in the diluate remained constant irrespective of the molecular weight of anionic dyes, whereas the salt recovery remained very high (99.5%).

Desalting of papermaking tobacco sheet extract using selective electrodialysis

  • The inorganic components in tobacco sheet extract have significant influence on the sensory taste of the cigars and the harmful component delivery in cigarette smoke. To identify the contributions of the divalent inorganic components on harmful components delivery in cigarette smoke, a self-made selective electrodialysis was assembled with monovalent ion-selective ion exchange membranes. The influences of current density and extract content on the desalination performance were investigated. Result indicates that the majorities chloride, nitrate, and sulfate ions were removed, comparing with 50-60% of potassium and only less than 10% of magnesium and calcium ions removed in the investigated current density. The permselectivity of the tested cations across the Selemion CSO cation exchange membranes follows the order: $K^+>Ca^{2+}>Mg^{2+}$. A current density of $15mA/cm^2$ is an optional choice by considering both the energy consumption and separation efficiency. When the extract contents are in the range of 7%-20%, the removal ratios the potassium ions are kept around 60%, while the removal ratios of the calcium and magnesium ions fluctuate in the range of 16-27% and 8-14%, respectively. The tobacco smoke experiments indicated that the divalent metal ions have dual roles for the harmful component delivery in cigarette smoke. The divalent potassium and calcium ions were unfavorable for the total particulate matter emission but beneficial to decrease the HCN delivery in the mainstream cigarette smoke. The selective electrodialysis is a robust technology to decrease the harmful component delivery in cigarette smoke.

비드와 섬유이온교환체 고정 PE 불균질 이온교환막의 제조 및 특성 (Preparation and Properties of PE Heterogeneous ion Exchange Membrane with Bead and Fibrous ion Exchanger)

  • 본 연구는 폴리에틸렌 기재에 비드와 섬유상 이온교환체의 배합비를 달리하여 불균질 이온 교환막을 제조하였다. PE 불균질 이온교환막의 이온교환능은 섬유강 이온교환체의 양이 증가할수록 선형적으로 증가하였으며 30 wt%에서 최대 1.86 meq/g 이었다. 불균질 이온교환막의 함수율, 고정이온농도 및 이온운반율도 섬유상 이온교환체의 양이 증가할수록 증가하였나. 반면 불균질 이온교환막의 전기저항은 섬유상 이온교환체의 양이 증가할수록 감소하였으며, IXF (ion exchange fiber)의 혼합량이 30 wt%에서 5$\Omega$/$\textrm{cm}^2$으로 전기저항 값이 가장낮았다.

알칼리 수전해를 위한 상용 음이온교환막에 관한 연구 (Study on Commercially Available Anion Exchange Membrane for Alkaline Water Eectrolysis)

  • 알칼리 수전해용 격막으로 사용가능성을 평가하기 위해 5종류의 상용 음이온교환막의 열적안정성, 이온전도도, 내구성을 평가하였다. TGA (thermo-gravimetric analysis)로 분석한 열적안정성은 FAAM-PK-75와 FAAM-40 막이 다른 3종류의 AEM, AHO, AHA 막과 비교하여 좋은 성능을 보였다. 25℃와 80℃, 7 M KOH 수용액에서의 이온전도도는 AEM막이 다른 막과 비교하여 약 4~17배 높은 값을 보였다. 25℃, 7 M KOH 수용액에서 측정한 내구성은 FAAM-PK-75막이 다른 막과 비교하여 안정하였다.

  • 본 연구에서는 막 결합형 축전식 탈염공정에 적용하기 위하여 고분자 지지체 polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)에 상용화된 양이온 및 음이온교환수지를 배합하여 불균질 이온교환막을 제조하였다. PVDF와 이온교환수지의 배합비율을 1 : 1, 1.4 : 1, 2 : 1, 3 : 1로 달리하였으며 SEM, 함수율, 이온교환용량, 메탄올 투과도, 이온전도도를 측정하여 물리화학적 특성을 평가하였다. 특성평가 결과 모든 특성을 고려하였을 때 2 : 1의 배합비율이 가장 우수한 값을 나타내었다. 2 : 1의 배합비율로 제조한 불균질 양이온교환막의 함수율은 34%, 이온교환용량은 1.54 meq/g, 이온전도도는 0.019 S/cm, 메탄올 투과도는 $2.28{\times}10^{-7}{\sim}8.86{\times}10^{-7}cm^2/s$의 값을 나타내었으며 불균질 음이온교환막에서는 각 각 37%, 2.18 meq/g, 0.034 S/cm, $1.46{\times}10^{-7}{\sim}8.66{\times}10^{-7}cm^2/s$의 값을 나타내었다.

  • The first membrane technology applied in the Japanese industry was a. electro-dialysis(ED) process using ion-exchange meabranes. These membranes were first developed in early 50ties and the Japanese government decided to use this method for concentration of sea water to produce salt, which was then produced by solar evaporation. This development program started from 1960 by the Japan monopoly Coop. (at that time). To apply ED process for sea-water concentrat ion it was necessary to develop ion-exchange membranes having very low electric resistance to avoid energy loss due to Joule heat, and those having selectivity to permeate single valent ions only to avoid scale formation in the ED stacks. These Japanese companies, Asahi Glass, Asahi Chemical and Tokuyama Soda, have succeeded to develop such membranes, and until 1971 all of the seven salt manufacturing companies had adopted ED for production of food salt.

Effect of Annealing of Nafion Recast Membranes Containing Ionic Liquids

  • The composite membranes comprising of sulfonated polymers as matrix and ionic liquids as ion-conducting medium in replacement of water are studied to investigate the effect of annealing of the sulfonated polymers. The polymeric membranes are prepared on recast Nafion containing the ionic liquid, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ($EMIBF_4$). The composite membranes are characterized by thermogravitational analyses, ion conductivity and small-angle X-ray scattering. The composite membranes annealed at $190^{\circ}C$ for 2 h after the fixed drying step showed better ionic conductivity, but no significant increase in thermal stability. The mean Bragg distance between the ionic clusters, which is reflected in the position of the ionomer peak (small-angle scattering maximum), is larger in the annealed composite membranes containing $EMIBF_4$ than the non-annealed ones. It might have been explained to be due to the different level of ion-clustering ability of the hydrophilic parts (i.e., sulfonic acid groups) in the non- and annealed polymer matrix. In addition, the ionic conductivity of the membranes shows higher for the annealed composite membranes containing $EMIBF_4$. It can be concluded that the annealing of the composite membranes containing ionic liquids due to an increase in ion-clustering ability is able to bring about the enhancement of ionic conductivity suitable for potential use in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) at medium temperatures ($150-200^{\circ}C$) in the absence of external humidification.
