Alignment Effects for Nematic Liquid Crystal on a New Diamond-like Carbon Layer

  • Alignment effects for nematic liquid crystal (NLC) and electro-optical (EO) characteristics of the ion beam (IB) aligned twisted nematic (TN)-liquid crystal display (LCD) with oblique ion beam exposure on the diamond-like carbon (DLC) thin film surface were studied. A high pretilt angle of 3.5$^{\circ}$ in NLC by ion beam exposure on the DLC thin film layer can be measured. An excellent voltage-transmittance (V-T) curve of the ion beam aligned TN-LCD was observed with oblique ion beam exposure on the DLC thin film surface for 1 min. Also, a faster response time for the ion beam aligned TN-LCD with oblique ion beam exposure on the DLC thin film surface for 1 min can be achieved.

  • Electro-optical (EO) characteristics of the ion beam (IB) aligned twisted nematic (TN)-liquid crystal display (LCD) with oblique ion beam exposure on the diamond-like carbon (DLC) thin film surface were studied. An excellent voltage-transmittance (V-T) curve of the ion beam aligned IN-LCD was observed with oblique ion beam exposure on the DLC thin film surface for I min.   • We studied the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) aligning capabilities using the new alignment material of a SiO thin film. The homogenous alignment can be obtain어 using ion beam (IB) exposure on the SIO thin film, when positive type NLC ($Delta\varepsilon$>0) was injected However, the homeotropic alignment can be obtained using ion beam (IB) exposure on the SiO thin film, when negative type NLC ($\Delta\varepsilon$>0) was injected The LC aligning ability on the SiO thin film depends on the dielectric anisotropy type of LC. It will be discussed.

  • We studied the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) alignment capability by the IB(Ion bean) alignment method on a NDLC(Nitrogen Diamond Like Carbon) as a-C:H thin film. and investigated electro-optical performances of the IBaligned IPS(In plane switching)cell with NDLC surface. A good LC alignment by IB exposure on a NDLC surface was achieved. Monodomain alignment of the IB aligned IPS cell can be observed. The goodelectro-optical (EO) characteristics of the IB aligned IPS cell was observed with oblique IBexposure on the NDLC as a-C:H thin film for 1 min.

  • The aligned liquid crystals (LCs) display on SiNx thin films using ion-beam (IB) irradiation was studied with controllability ofpretilt angle depending on incident energies of the IB. Plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) was used to orient the LCs on SiNx alignment films. The LCs alignment property for the SiNx thin films were observed to verify the practical application potential (figure1). A good LCs alignment of vertical alignment LCs cells on SiNx thin film surfaces irradiated with incident IB energy of 1800eV was achieved. Also, a good LC alignment by the IB irradiation on the SiNx thin film surface was observed at an annealing temperature of $180^{\circ}C$. However, the alignment defects of the nematic liquid crystal was observed at an annealing temperature above $230^{\circ}C$. The atomic force microscopy (AFM) images of LCs on SiNx thin film surfaces irradiated with IB energy was used for the surface analysis.

Solution-Derived Amorphous Yttrium Gallium Oxide Thin Films for Liquid Crystal Alignment Layers

  • We demonstrated an alternative electrically controlled birefringence liquid crystal (ECB-LC) system with ion beam (IB)-irradiated yttrium gallium oxide (YGaO) alignment films using a sol-gel process. The surface roughness of the films was dependent on the annealing temperature; aggregated particles on surface were observed at lower annealing temperatures, whereas a smooth surface could be obtained with higher annealing temperatures. Higher transmittance in the visible region was observed at higher annealing temperatures. The film had an amorphous crystallographic state irrespective of the annealing temperature. Furthermore, ECB-LC cell with our IB-irradiated YGaO film yielded faster response time when compared to ECB-LC cell with rubbed polyimide. Considering the fast response time and high transmittance, the IB-irradiated YGaO-base LC system is a powerful alternative application for the liquid crystal display industry.

  • We studied liquid crystal (LC) alignment with ion beam (IB) on polyimide and electro-optical characteristics of twisted nematic (TN)-liquid crystal display (LCD) on the polyimide surface using obliquely ion beam exposure. A good uniform alignment of the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) alignment with the ion beam exposure on the polyimide surface was observed. In addition, it can be achieved the good EO properties, and residual DC property of the ion-beam-aligned TN-LCD on polyimide surface.

A high pretilt angle of about $5^{\circ}$ by ion beam(IB) exposure on the a-C:H thin film surface was measured. A good LC alignment by the IB alignment method on the a-C:H thin film surface was observed at annealing temperature of $250^{\circ}C$, and the alignment defect of the NLC was observed above annealing temperature of $300^{\circ}C$. Consequently, the high LC pretilt angle and the good thermal stability of LC alignment by the IB alignment method on the a-C:H thin film surface as working gas at 30W rf bias condition can be achieved.

  • We studied the nematic liquid crystaL(NLC) aligning capabilities using the new alignment material of a nitrogenated diamond-like carbon(NDLC) thin film. The NDLC thin film exhibits high electrical resistivity and thermal conductivity that are similar to the properties shown by diamond-like carbon (DLC) thin films. The diamond-like properties and nondiamond-like bonding make NDLC an attractive candidate for applications. A high pretilt angle of about 9.9$^{\circ}$ by ion beam(IB) exposure on the NDLC thin film surface was measured. A good LC alignment is achieved by the IB alignment method on the NDLC thin films surface at annealing temperature of 200 $^{\circ}C$. The alignment defect of the NLC was observed above annealing temperature of 250 $^{\circ}C$. Consequently, the high pretilt angle and the good LC alignment by the IB alignment method on the NDLC thin film surface can be achieved.
