  • There should not be ion exchange resin particles in S/G sludge. The suspicious spherical resin particles observed in S/G sludge sample were characterized for particle size distribution under optical microscope using the micro-technique, for element analysis by the electron probe micro analysis (EPMA), and for molecular identification by the IR spectroscopy The particle sizes are distributed from 1 to 200 ${\mu}m$ for the sludge, while 40 to 500 ${\mu}m$ for the spherical resin particles. The results of the elemental analysis showed different major impurities: Si, Al, Mn, Cr, Ni, Zn and Ti for the sludge particles, while Si, Cu, Zn for the spherical resin particles. However, both particles contain Fe as a matrix of hematite ($Fe_{3}O_4$). IR spectrum of the spherical particles was quite different from that of ion exchange resins used in S/G system. These results indicate that the spherical particles are not related to ion exchange resin particles and formed by the process of the sludge formation.

  • The ion exchange resins have been synthesized from chlormethyl styrene - 1,4 - divinylbenzene(DVB) with 1%, 3%, and 5%-crosslinking and macro cyclic ligand of OenNen-$H_4$ by copolymerization method and the adsorption characteristics of uranium(VI), iron(II) and samarium(III) metallic ions have been investigated in various experimental conditions. The synthesis of these resins was confirmed by content of chlorine, element analysis, and IR-spectrum. The effects of pH, time, dielectric constant of solvent and crosslink on adsorption of metallic ions were investigated. The uranium ion was showed fast adsorption on the resins above pH 3. The optimum equilibrium time for adsorption of metallic ions was about two hours. The adsorption selectivity determined in ethanol was in increasing order uranium ${UO_2}^{2+}>Fe^{2+}>Sm^{3+}$ ion. The adsorption was in order of 1%, 3%, and 5% crosslink resin and adsorption of resin decreased in proportion to order of dielectric constant of solvent.

  • In this study, the hyper branched poly (styrene-co-divinylbenzene) (PSD) was synthesized by bulk polymerization and the cationic exchanger with high ion exchange capacity was prepared by sulfonation. The structure of hyper branched PSD ion exchanger was investigated by FT-IR, $^1H-NMR$ spectroscopy, and GPC analysis. The molecular weight, viscosity of hyper branched PSD increased with DVB content, which have the maximum values of 9410g/mol and 338 cP, respectively. And the reaction rate also increased with cross-linker content. As DVB content increased, the solubility of PSD decreased having the maximum value of 22 g with 0.1 mol% DVB. The water content and ion exchange capacity of the hyper branched PSD ion exchanger increased with the amount of sulfuric group. Their maximum values were 18.2% and 4.6 meq/g, respectively. The adsorption of copper and nickel ion was completed within 40 min.

  • Dowex 1-X8 resin ion exchanged with calcon carboxylic acid (CCA-Dowex 1-X8) and 2-methyl-8-hydroxyquinoline(MHQ) impregnated-Amberlite XAD-4 resin (MHQ-XAD-4) were examined for the separation and preconcentration of ferric ion from the various matrices. The stabilities of these resins were investigated, and their capacities on ferric ion were also measured. The effect of pH on the adsorption of ferric ion and matrix ions, such as Al(Ⅲ) and Ca(Ⅱ), was investigated to determine the optimun pH ranges. Separation and preconcentration of iron in aluminium foil and mineral water samples were studied by elution method with these resin columns. The recovered ions by 10ml of 2F nitric acid was determined by flame atomic spectrophotometry. SP-Sephadex C-25 column was used to separate ferrous and ferric ion in mineral water by stepwise elution with ferrozine and 1 % ascorbic acid-ferrozine solution. The concentrated and separated each ion could be determined spectrophotometrically at the analytical wavelenth of Fe(Ⅱ)-ferrozine complex (562nm).

  • Acetic acid and succinic acid bonded polyamine-polyurea(CPPI and SAPPI) resins were synthesized from the reaction of polyethylenimine-polymethylenepolyphenylene isocyanate(PPI) resin as matrix polymer and chloroacetic acid and chlorosuccinic acid respectively. These resins were confirmed with infrared spectrometry and elemental analysis. The adsorption characteristics of the chromium(III) and dichromate(or chromate) ions on the resins were studied by measuring distribution coefficients($K_d$) with changing pH of the solution. It was thought that these ions were adsorbed by ion exchange mechanism. Chromium(III) and dichromate ion could be separated with stepwise elution method by changing pH of the eluent using SAPPI resin packed column($0.6cm(i.\;d.){\times}10cm(L.)$). Also, dichromate ion could be preconecntrated with CPPI resin column by a concentration factor of 50.

  • Nodulation phenology in relation to plant phenology, vertical distribution of nodul and root biomass in different soil, correlation between nodule and root size, and nitrogen mineralization around the rhizosphere by ion-exchange resin bag buried at 10 cm of soil were studied in Elaeagnus nmbellata (autumn-olive) stand, Korea. Nodulation appeared from spring to autumn and nodule phenology was coincided with the timing of root activity rather than that of foliation. Nodul size increased in proportion to the root size. In the sand dune with the lower root biomass, nodule appeared up to 80 cm deep in soil and the nodule biomass was 1,070 kg/ha, which was the highest value reported for several actinorhizal plants in the temperate regions. It is suggested that nodule distribution and production are mainly influenced by soil aeration among environmental factors. The higher ammonification or lower nitrification rate contrasted markedly with the earlier studies that reported lower ammonification or higher nitrification in actinorhizal plant soil. Nitrogen mineralization rate around the rhizosphere with root and nodule was characterized by higher nitrification rate than that in the control soil without root and nodule.
