  • This study presents a developmental pattern of technological capability of catching-up players in terms of production, investment, innovation and networking capability. In order to do this, the study develops an analytical framework and examines the experience of the Korean semiconductor industry. Although the presented pattern in the study is not a general pattern for all catching-up players, this pattern implies one of the useful dynamic strategies for catching-up players in developing countries. In addition, this study discusses its contributions and further research areas in the last part of the paper.

  • A system dynamics model is developed in order to evaluate the contribution level of the activities regarding HANARO, which is the research reactor in Korea. The system dynamics model has room to be improved, but it is logically sound enough to evaluate the general level of contributions and to develop strategies for the HANARO to be more contributable. Considering the uncertainty involved with the input variables, the contribution level is ranged from 3 times to about 30 times of the investment made on it.   • We propose a neural network based up-trend detector. An auto-associative neural network was trained with 'up-trend' data obtained from the KOSPI 200 future price. It was then used to predict an up-trend Simple investment strategies based on the detector achieved a two year return of $19.8\%$ with no leverage.

  • Freight Forwarders is very important of logistics industry but it still has a lot of problems which have to be improved. The purposes of this study are realizing the current state of freight forwarders and suggesting the developing strategies. It is necessary to make proper size, develop of human resource and construct of information system for development of freight forwarders. Furthermore, it requires more efforts of company and government such as support of tax, support of investment in freight forwarders.

  • This study aims to presents the applicability of apartment building for renewable energy systems using method of uncomplicated calculation and computer simulation. According to the weather conditions (NASA Surface meteorology and Solar Energy) analysis, it has been found that photovoltaic and wind power system can be applied to apartment buildings application. In case study considering layout and block plan, adaptation of solar water heating, photovoltaic and wind energy system to apartment buildings was proved to produce a profit. And the application strategies of renewable energy systems can be used not only for the investment decisions for economic analysis but also for the comparative analysis of uncomplicated calculation and computer simulation.

Heritage Language and Culture Maintenance in the U.S.

  • In recent years, the relationship of language maintenance to culture and identity has received increased attention in the language acquisition and education fields. Korean immigrants in the U.S. form one of the biggest Asian groups and their language and cultural maintenance has been a major issue for both parents and ESL teachers. The present research is designed to investigate the cultural and social identities as well as the psychological investment factors that contribute to heritage language maintenance. Three Korean immigrant families in a small Midwest university town in the U.S. were surveyed and later interviewed. Issues and strategies concerning their children's Korean education in the U.S., coupled with the competing goal for the children to learn English were documented through parent interviews and interviews with school-aged focal children. Strategies and stances that facilitate or hinder both heritage and target language maintenance goals are presented along with participants' major reasons for heritage language maintenance in their homes and via Saturday schools. This work will assist ESL teachers and sociolinguists in situating both Korean student and parent goals in the context of shifting cultural and linguistic identities in countries where they have immigrated.

  • Life cycle costing is one of the most effective cost approaches when we choose a solution from series of alternative so the least long-term cost ownership is achieved. Life cycle costing in railway industry has been focused on the prediction of investment for railway vehicles. But in today, the life cycle cost, LCC, prediction on the aspect of operation and maintenance cost through whole life cycle is highly necessary. In this paper, we present a strategy for the development of life cycle cost estimation software on the aspect of maintenance strategies of railway vehicle. For this purpose, we suggested a structure of LCC software based on the UNIFE LCC model. And we developed a pilot version of software to evaluate the LCC model that we suggested for railway vehicle. We performed LCC analysis on the brake module of metro vehicle in case study and concluded that the software and model developed in this research could enough to support engineers in choosing better cost effective solutions from many alternatives.

  • The purpose of this paper is to acquire competitiveness faced with a global business so that Korea and China make them put ICT into practice through industrial policy of regional innovation clustering. In the Chapter 2, overall review of industrial spaces theory and the environment in Global-business is conducted. In the Chapter 3, current main economic issue and West Great Development of China are viewed. Chapter 4 proposes models and strategies for the target of regional innovation clustering and phasing in development. The results of this study is that both country should do more long-term cooperation and collecting intensive knowledge for the property of region and preparatory research of regional innovation clustering than do reckless investment.

  • Material is enabling technology that creates the product performance and the service of most industrial sectors and fields of technology. However, compared to the other fields such as IT, BT, and NT etc., relatively little attention has been paid to the research on strategy and innovation of materials technology. This bias should have resulted in the misfit of policy and less than enough investment in materials innovation. This paper discusses the characteristics, process, and future of the materials innovation. The process and status of materials technology in Korea are analyzed based on the discussions above. Finally, some suggestions for R&D strategies of Korea are presented on the basis of the nature, trend and barriers of materials innovation.

An Analysis of Information Security Management Strategies in the Presence of Interdependent Security Risk

  • This study expands the current body of research by exploring multiple scenarios of insufficient and excessive IT security investments caused by interdependent risks and the interplay between IT security investments and cyber insurance. A key finding is that organizations experiencing interdependent risks with different types of cyber attacks (i.e., targeted and untargeted attacks) use different strategies in making IT security investment decisions and in purchasing cyber insurance policies for their information security risk management than firms that are facing independent risks. The study further provides an economic rationale for employing insurance mechanisms as a risk management solution for information security.
