  • Objectives: The study was to examine major factors that affect suicidal ideation of elderly in urban areas. Methods: The subjects were 302 elders who voluntarily participated in the study. The instruments for this study were scale for suicidal ideation(19 items), family concord (20 items), CED-depression(20 items) and family inventor of life events and changes(FILE, 22 items). Frequency, percentage, t-test, ANOVA, Duncan test, Pearson' correlation coefficient, stepwise multiple regression with SPSS program were used to analyze the data. Results: The average score of suicidal ideation was 14.88. Suicidal ideation was positively related to depression and stress, but negatively related to family concord, depression, family concord, stress and health status accounted for 86.1% of the variance in suicidal ideation. These results suggest that family concord, depression and stress can be potential risk factors for suicide of elderly. Conclusions: These findings may give useful information for developing suicidal prevention program on old age.

  • Purpose: Depression is a common sign of suffering among the patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). Frequent and severe neuropsychiatric symptoms lead to high levels of distress in patients and their caregivers, which results in the high levels of caregiver burden. The aim of this study was to determine the predictors of caregiver burden in caregivers of the patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). Methods: The study included 183 consecutive PD patients and their caregivers. Patients were assessed using the Hoehn and Yahr scale, Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and Schwab and England Activities of Daily Living Scale. Caregivers' depressive symptoms were evaluated using the Caregiver Burden Inventor (CBI), BDI, and World Health Organization Quality of Life Scale. Results: All of the patients reported one or more neuropsychiatric symptoms. Patients' and caregivers' depressive symptoms, caregivers' age and education, time for caregiving, and quality of life were significantly associated with the increased caregiver burden. After controlling the level of education as a potential confounding variable, depression in both patients and caregivers, time for caregiving, and quality of life explained 45.6% of the variance in caregiver burden. Conclusion: Substantial attention needs to be given to the early identification of depression in PD patients and their caregivers to improve caregivers' quality of life and burden.

  • All over the world, the attention on the exploitation of public research, which is mainly implemented by technology transfer, has increased in recent years. Licensing, which is one of representative mechanisms for public-to-private technology transfer, is accompanied by the frequent conflicts in negotiating a license payment between public research institutes (PRIs) and private firms. In spite of the body of literature on technology transfer in a licensing context, it focuses on contracts between private firms. Even the existing literature, which addresses public-to-private technology transfer through licensing, to our knowledge, has not yet formalized an established licensing model. This paper develops a mathematical model of public-to-private licensing, not hitherto tried by academics. The model addresses important issues to be applied comprehensively in licensing practice, such as determining a royalty rate, balancing between an initial payment and a running royalty, designing an inventor's incentive system, and setting a minimum payment as a screening criterion. The paper also provides reasonable management implications to controversial issues in technology transfer from PRIs to private firms, partly employing the comparative analysis between current stylized licensing practice and the one suggested in the model. We hope that study contributes to providing the foundation on which the theory on public-to-private licensing would extend to an in-depth level.

  • In acquiring and transferring a superior knowledge assesing the intermediate result value of a competitive R&D project is very important for a firm engaging in R&D. Most existing literatures on R&D evaluation are concerned with project selection and resource allocation. In this paper the stage of an R&D project is classified into research, exploratory development, and development. And a model is suggested which evaluates the intermediate result value before completion of development stage under duopoly and oligopolistic competition. Assessed value of the intermediate result transferred to the next tier company can be used as a minimum acceptable price to the inventor when more advanced knowledge acquired through R&D is transferred to the next tier one. The model suggested is composed of structural variables including research cost, success rates, potential profits, discount rate degree of competition. By using exponential distribution for invertion process time in each stage, we derive a formula that can assess the value of the intermediate result, and we demonstrate how the model can be applied to a competitive R&D situation through an example.

  • Clothing consumption expenditure (UX) data of Korean consumers during the period of 1965 to 1993 were analyzed by time series analysis technique. According to the results of regression analysis, current income and UX of the year before showed most significant influences on the current UX. This means that the absolute and permanent income hypotheses can be accepted in case of clothing expenditures. However the effect of income decreased as the economy developed. The relative price of clothing had weak or no influence on clothing expenditures. It was also found out that CSX of the year before, the change of income, relative price of clothing ware the factors that affected clothing expenditures. From the estimation of Houthakker-Taylor state adjustment model, a negative stock coefficient was obtained. That is, clothing is subject to an inventor effect and Korean consumers regard clothing as one of the durable goods. To define whether clothing is a "luxury" or a "necessity", income and relative price elasticity of clothing expenditures were estimated. Income elasticity of clothing is slightly below 1.0 in case of national aggregate expenditures, and slightly above 1.0 in case of urban consumers' expenditures. Income elasticity has declined over time. Meanwhile the coefficient of price elasticity is not significant, indicating that the relative price of clothing have little connection with clothing expenditure.lothing expenditure.

  • A patent is a right of intellectual properties to an inventor or its assignee for a limited period under an international law. Not only in an invention of new machines, but it is competitive for using and creating technology in the world based on the patents. Most of the business models are good examples for patented technology, however a statistical analyzing model could be another one. In this paper we study and analyze the patents for the statistical analyzing and data mining models which are currently applied and registered, and suggest a statistical tool for analyzing and categorizing patent data. For this study all the patents in Korea and U.S. are listed and searched to sample the only cases concerning statistics.

  • As the more people use smart phones, the interest in the apps gets the higher. Studies such as App Inventor, app generation methods using templates provide app development process with app development methods by substituting programming work. However, the realm of producible apps is limited and there are a lot of set up operations and input informations. Also, there is lack of support for smart phone sensors that are in a high demand of utilization. This paper proposed an android app development method for resolving existing problems, and implemented an accompanying app development tool. When the proposed app development method derived through combination of function modules and sensor modules is used, it's possible to produce apps with minimal user inputs, and to use sensors easily. Also, because it is simple to identify overall flow of app execution, and functions addible to the app are provided for users by units of module, it is possible to develop apps quickly.
