  • In the stereoscopic or multiview display, the depth video illustrates visual distances between objects and camera. To promote the computational efficiency of depth video encoder, we exploit the intra prediction of depth videos under Versatile Video Coding (VVC) and observe a diverse distribution of intra prediction modes with different coding unit sizes. We propose a hybrid scheme to further boost fast depth video coding. In the first stage, we adaptively predict the HADamard (HAD) costs of intra prediction modes and initialize a candidate list according to the HAD costs. Then, the candidate list is further improved by considering the probability distribution of candidate modes with different CU sizes. Finally, early termination of CU splitting is performed at each CU depth level based on the Bayesian theorem. Our proposed method is incorporated into VVC intra prediction for fast coding of depth videos. Experiments with 7 standard sequences and 4 Quantization parameters (Qps) validate the efficiency of our method.

  • The H.264|AVC standard incorporates an intra prediction tool into inter frame coding. However, this leads to excessive amount of increase in encoding time, thus resulting in the difficulty in real-time implementation of software encoders. In this paper, we first propose an early decision on intra prediction coding and a fast intra prediction method using the characteristics of block contents and the context of neighboring block modes for the intra prediction in the inter frame coding of H.264/AVC. Basically, the proposed methods determine a skip condition on whether the $4{\times}4$ intra prediction is to be used in the inter frame coding by considering the content characteristics of each block to be encoded and the context of its neighboring blocks. The performance of our proposed methods is compared with the Joint Model reference software version 11.0 of H.264|AVC. The experimental results show that our proposed methods allow for 41.63% reduction in the total encoding time with negligible amounts of PSNR drops and bitrate increases, compared to the original Joint Model reference software version 11.0.

  • In this paper, we demonstrate inter-layer prediction tools for scalable video coders. The proposed scalable coder is designed to support not only spatial, quality and temporal scalabilities, but also view scalability. In addition, we propose quad-tree inter-layer prediction tools to improve coding efficiency at enhancement layers. The proposed inter-layer prediction tools generate texture prediction signal with exploiting texture, syntaxes, and residual information from a reference layer. Furthermore, the tools can be used with inter and intra prediction blocks within a large coding unit. The proposed framework guarantees the rate distortion performance for a base layer because it does not have any compulsion such as constraint intra prediction. According to experiments, the framework supports the spatial scalable functionality with about 18.6%, 18.5% and 25.2% overhead bits against to the single layer coding. The proposed inter-layer prediction tool in multi-loop decoding design framework enables to achieve coding gains of 14.0%, 5.1%, and 12.1% in BD-Bitrate at the enhancement layer, compared to a single layer HEVC for all-intra, low-delay, and random access cases, respectively. For the single-loop decoding design, the proposed quad-tree inter-layer prediction can achieve 14.0%, 3.7%, and 9.8% bit saving.

  • In this paper, we described intra prediction which is the one of techniques to be used for higher compression performance in H.264/AVC and proposed the design of intra predictor for efficient intra prediction mode processing. The proposed system is consist of processing elements, precomputation processing elements, an intra prediction controller, an internal memory and a register controller. The proposed system needs the reduced the computation cycles by using processing elements and precomputation processing element and also needs the reduced the number of access time to external memory by using internal memory and registers architecture. We designed the proposed system with Verilog-HDL and verified with suitable test vectors which are encoded YUV files. The proposed architecture belongs to the baseline profile of H.264/AVC decoder and is suitable for portable devices such as cellular phone with the size of $176{\times}144$. As a result of experiment, the performance of the proposed intra predictor is about 60% higher than that of the previous one.

  • In this paper, two digital video scrambling methods are proposed as simple means of the digital content protection techniques. One is inter block scrambling using motion vector, the other is intra block scrambling using intra prediction mode. The proposed inter block scrambling method distorts the original sequences by swapping horizontal and vertical components of motion vector. This method can be applied on most common video coding techniques such as MPEG-1, 2, 4, H.264, etc. The proposed intra block scrambling method distorts the original sequences by modifying intra prediction mode that is property of H.254 video coding technique. Both methods do not cause my bit rate increase after scrambling. Moreover, they have low complexity because they need only simple operation like XOR. Especially, the proposed intra block scrambling does not distort inter blocks directly. But inter blocks are distorted by error propagation effect as much as intra blocks. This paper introduces two new digital video scrambling method and verifies its effectiveness through simulation.

  • The state-of-the-art H.264/AVC standard was designed for the lossy video coding so that it could not yield the best performance for lossless video coding. In this paper, we propose two efficient intra lossless coding methods by embedding a pixel-wise prediction into the H.264/AVC. One is based on the pixel-wise prediction for the residual signal of the H.264/AVC intra Prediction and the other suggests a newly additional intra prediction mode for the conventional intra prediction. We found that the proposed lossless coding algorithms could achieve approximately $12%{\sim}25%$ more bit saving compared to the H.264/AVC FRExt high profile for several test sequences in terms of a compression ratio.

  • In this paper, we propose an intra prediction method for depth picture using CNN and Attention mechanism. The proposed method allows each pixel in a block to predict to select pixels among reference area. Spatial features in the vertical and horizontal directions for reference pixels are extracted from the top and left areas adjacent to the block, respectively, through a CNN layer. The two spatial features are merged into the feature direction and the spatial direction to predict features for the prediction block and reference pixels, respectively. the correlation between the prediction block and the reference pixel is predicted through attention mechanism. The predicted correlations are restored to the pixel domain through CNN layers to predict the pixels in the block. The average prediction error of intra prediction is reduced by 5.8% when the proposed method is added to VVC intra modes.

  • We propose a fast macroblock mode prediction and decision algorithm based on contextual information for Pslices in the H.264/AVC video standard, in which the mode prediction part is composed of intra and inter modes. There are nine $4{\times}4$ and four $16{\times}16$ modes in the intra mode prediction, and seven block types exist for the best coding gain based on rate-distortion optimization. This scheme gives rise to exhaustive computations (search) in the coding procedure. To overcome this problem, a fast inter mode prediction scheme is applied that uses contextual mode information for P-slices. We verify the performance of the proposed scheme through a comparative analysis of experimental results. The suggested mode search procedure increased more than 57% in speed compared to a full mode search and more than 20% compared to the other methods.

  • In H.264/Ave, an intra prediction added to the P-frame coding slightly improves both of image quality and bit rate, but greatly increases an amount of computation. In order to reduce the increase in computation, this paper proposes an image contents based intra prediction coding using characteristics that the best intra block mode depends on the image content of a macro block. The proposed algorithm estimates the image content with image complexity and the best inter block mode, and then selects or excludes a intra block mode on the basis of it. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm reduces average O.OldB in image quality, and increases average 0.38% in the bit rate, but reduces average 37.02% in computation time compared with the conventional algorithm.

  • The Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) and Video Coding Experts Group (VCEG) have developed a new standard that promises to outperform the earlier MPEG-4 and H.263 standards. The new standard is called H.264/AVC (Advanced Video Coding) and is published jointly as MPEG-4 Part 10 and ITU-T Recommendation H.264. In particular, the H.264/AVC intra prediction coding provides nine directional prediction modes for every $4{\times}4$ block in order to reduce spatial redundancies. In this paper, an ABS (Adaptive Bit Skip) mode is proposed. In order to achieve coding efficiency, the proposed method can remove the mode bits to represent the prediction mode by using the similarity of adjacent pixels. Experimental results show that the proposed method achieves the PSNR gain of about 0.2 dB in R-D curve and reduces the bit rates about 3.6% compared with H.264/AVC.
