This paper proposes more robust error concealment techniques (ECTs) for MPEG-2 intra coded frame. MPEG-2 source coding algorithm is very sensitive to transmission errors due to the use of variable-length coding. The transmission errors are corrected by error correction scheme, however, they cannot be revised properly. Error concealment (EC) is used to conceal the errors which are not corrected by error correction and to provide minimum visual distortion at the decoder. If errors are generated in intra coded frame, that is the starting frame of GOP, they are propagated to other inter coded frames due to the nature of motion compensated prediction coding. Such propagation of error may cause severe visual distortion. The proposed algorithm in this paper utilizes the spatio-temporal information of neighboring inter coded frames to conceal the successive slices errors occurred in I-frame. The proposed method also overcomes the problems that previous ECTs reside. The proposed algorithm generates consistent performance even in network where the violent transmission errors frequently occur. Algorithm is performed in MPEG-2 video codec and we can confirm that the proposed algorithm provides less visible distortion and higher PSNR than other approaches through simulations.
In this paper, we propose a semi-automatic segmentation method which can be used to generate video object plane (VOP) for object based coding scheme and multimedia authoring environment. Semi-automatic segmentation can be considered as a user-assisted segmentation technique. A user can initially mark objects of interest around the object boundaries and then the selected objects are continuously separated from the un selected areas through time evolution in the image sequences. The proposed segmentation method consists of two processing steps: partially manual intra-frame segmentation and fully automatic inter-frame segmentation. The intra-frame segmentation incorporates user-assistance to define the meaningful complete visual object of interest to be segmentation and decides precise object boundary. The inter-frame segmentation involves boundary and region tracking to obtain temporal coherence of moving object based on the object boundary information of previous frame. The proposed method shows stable and efficient results that could be suitable for many digital video applications such as multimedia contents authoring, content based coding and indexing. Based on this result, we have developed objects based video editing system with several convenient editing functions.

In this paper, the novel architecture of Intra-prediction & DCTQ hardware, which can process for the Full HD image($1980{\times}1088$@30fps) in realtime, is proposed. The cycle optimization method for the overall cycle of prediction, transform, scaling, descaling, and reconstruction is proposed. To reduce the cycle in the $4{\times}4$ prediction, the quantization process is performed during the prediction cycle and pre-selection of 2 modes among the 9 modes is performed to reduce the hardware area. To reduce the hardware of $16{\times}16$ and $8{\times}8$ prediction, the sharing logic between 2 prediction is utilized. The proposed architecture can process the 30frame/sec of full HD image in 108 MHz clock and operate 425 cycle for one macroblock.
The H.264/AVC standard achieves higher coding efficiency than previous video coding standards with the rate-distortion optimization (RDO) technique which selects the best coding mode and reference frame for each macroblock. As a result, the complexity of the encoder have been significantly increased. In this paper, a fast intra-mode decision algorithm is proposed to reduce the computational load of intra-mode search, which is based on the inverse tree-structure edge prediction algorithm. First, we obtained the dominant edge for each $4{\times}4$ block from local edge information, then the RDO process is only performed by the mode which corresponds to dominant edge direction. Then, for the $8{\times}8$ (or $16{\times}16$) block stage, the dominant edge is calculated from its four $4{\times}4$ (or $16{\times}16$) blocks' dominant edges without additional calculation and the RDO process is also performed by the mode which is related to dominant edge direction. Experimental results show that proposed scheme can significantly improve the speed of the intra prediction with a negligible loss in the peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR) and a little increase of bits.
To expedite UHD (Ultra High Definition) video service, the HEVC (High-Efficiency Video Coding) technology has recently been standardized and it achieves two times higher compression efficiency than the conventional H.264/AVC. To obtain the improved efficiency, however, it employs many complex methods which need complicated calculation, thereby resulting in a significantly increased computational complexity when compared to that of H.264/AVC. For example, to improve the coding efficiency of intra frame coding, up to 35 intra prediction modes are defined in HEVC, but this results in an increased encoding time than the H.264/AVC. In this paper, we propose a fast intra prediction mode decision scheme which reduces computational complexity by changing the number of intra prediction mode in accordance with the percentage of PU sizes for a given video resolution, and by classifying the 35 intra prediction modes into 4 categories considering video resolution and quantization parameter. The experimental results show that the total encoding time is reduced by about 7% on average at the cost of only 2% increase in BD-rate.
In this paper, alternative dynamic features for speech recognition are proposed. The goal of this work is to improve speech recognition accuracy by deriving the representation of distinctive dynamic characteristics from a speech spectrum. This work was inspired by two temporal dynamics of a speech signal. One is the highly non-stationary nature of speech, and the other is the inter-frame change of a speech spectrum. We adopt the use of a sub-frame spectrum analyzer to capture very rapid spectral changes within a speech analysis frame. In addition, we attempt to measure spectral fluctuations of a more complex manner as opposed to traditional dynamic features such as delta or double-delta. To evaluate the proposed features, speech recognition tests over smartphone environments were conducted. The experimental results show that the feature streams simply combined with the proposed features are effective for an improvement in the recognition accuracy of a hidden Markov model-based speech recognizer.
A wavelet-based video stream is more susceptible to the network transmission errors than DCT-based video. This is because bit-errors in a subband of a video frame affect not only the other subbands within the current frame but also the subsequent frames. In this paper, we propose a video source coding scheme called IPC(Intra Prediction Coding) scheme in order to reduce the error propagation to the subsequent frames. In the proposed scheme, a subband except LL subband in the current frame refers to the lower-level subband within the same frame. This reduces the error propagation to subsequent frames. We evaluated the performance of our proposed scheme in the simulated wireless network environment. As a result of tests, it was shown that the proposed algorithm shows better performance than MRME in a heavy motion image sequence while IPC outperforms MRME at a high bit-rate in small motion image sequence.

The new MPEG-4 video coding standard enables content-based functionalities. Image segmentation is an indispensable process for it. This paper addresses an effective segmentation of non-rigid objects. Non-rigid objects are deformable objects with fuzzy, blurred and indefinite boundaries. So it is difficult to segment deformable objects precisely. In order to solve this problem, we propose an effective segmentation of non-rigid objects using watershed algorithms in still pictures. And we propose an automatic segmentation through intra-frame and inter-frame segmentation process in video sequences. Automatic segmentation preforms boundary-based and region-based segmentation to extract precise object boundaries.

For the improvement of coding efficiency, the H.264/AYC standard uses new coding tools such as 1/4-pel-accurate motion estimation, multiple references, intra prediction, loop filter, variable block size etc. Using these coding tools, H.264/AYC has achieved significant improvements from rate-distortion point of view compared to existing standards. However, the encoder complexity was greatly increased due to these coding tools. We focus on the complexity reduction method of intra macroblock mode selection. The proposed algorithm for fast intra mode selection calculates the edge activity in transform domain, and performs fast encoding of intra frame in H.264/AYC through the fast prediction mode selection of intra4x4 and chrominance blocks. Simulation results show that the proposed method saves about 59.76% for QCIF sequences and 65.03% for CIF sequences of total encoding time, while bitrate increase and PSNR decrease are very small.
