  • Chitin, a poly $\beta$-(1longrightarrow14)-N-acetyl-D-glucosamine, is best known as a cell wall component of fungi and as a skeletal materials of invertebrates. Chitosan is derived from chitin by deacetylation in the presence of alkali. Chitosan has been developed as new physiological materials since it possesses antibacterial activity, hypocholesterolemic activity and antihypertensive action. However, the actions of chitosan in vivo still remain ambiguous as the physiological functional properties because most animal intestines, especially the human gastrointestinal tract, do not possess enzyme such as chitosanase which directly degrade the $\beta$-glucosidic linkage in chitosan, and consequently the unbroken polymers may be poorly absorbed into the human intestine. Therefore, recent studies as chitosan have attracted interest for chitosan oligosaccharides, because the oligosaccharides process not only water-soluble property but also versatile functional properties such as antitumor activity, immune-enhancing effects, enhancement of protective effects against infection with some pathogens in mice and antimicrobial activity (Kingsnorth et al., 1983, Mori et al., 1997). • The purpose of this study was to survey the various kinds of cooked beef products focusing on 'Chim' (a steamed beef products) through historical literatures written from 1670 to 1945 in korea. 'Chim' was recorded 25 times in the references and could be classified to 5 groups based on major ingredients such as stomach, intestine, lean meat, tail and ribs. Among the eleven cooked products of 'Chim', 'Kalbi-chim' (a steamed ribs) was recorded most frequently and 'Sundae-chim' (sausage-like product) was the next. Though 'Kalbi-chim' has been used untill present day but 'Sundae-chim' was disappeared in the early 19th centuries. Ribs were most popular ingredient among the major ingredients such as stomach, intestines, lean meat, tail, feet and ribs. Twenty one kinds of subingredients including pheasant meat, blood clot and flour were used for 'Chim'. Decorating ingredients such as roasted sesame power, pine nut and thin-layer fried eggs and seasonings such as pepper, roasted sesame powder, tripe, garlic, soy sauce and seasonings such as pepper, roasted sesame powder, tripe, garlic, soy sauce and sesame oil were used for 'Chim'.

  • A hemangiosarcoma in a 30 kg, 6-year-old German Shepherd dog showing signs of abdominal distension, anorexia and depression was diagnosed with clinicopathologic examination, abdominal radiographs and ultrasonographic assessmint. In abdominal radiographs, overall abdominal distension was seen. Stomach and some parts of small intestines were deviated caudo-ventrally by enlarged liver. The splenomegaly was also identified and descending colon was dislocated laterally by splenic mass. In ultrasonographic findings, abdominal fluid was identified. Hepatomegaly was seen and it was consisted of multiple, anechoic cysts. The spleen was enlarged and a large round mass with mixed echo pattern at the mid to tail portion of spleen was identified. Grossly, at necropsy, multi-sized cysts in which contained blood and fibrpus materials and some blood were seen in the cross section and it showed hard consistency. Also, lots of small red tumor nodules were dispersed on the serosal surface of the bladder, omentum, mesentery, diaphragm and peritoneum. In abdominal paracentesis, fluid having almost the same properties as circulating blood was identified. The hemoperitoneum was thought to be resulted from the bleeding into peritoneum owing to the rupture of cystic lesions located on the superficial liver area.

  • A nine-year-old spayed female Turkish angora cat presented for evaluation of anorexia, lethargy, vomiting, ptyalism and jaundice. Based on clinical examinations including laboratory examinations, concurrent inflammatory condition of the biliary system, pancreas and intestines (triaditis) was suspected. The cat was under antibiotic and immune-suppressive therapy, but there was no response. Further examination revealed the possibility of malignant hepatobiliary tumor with pulmonary metastasis. The condition of the cat continued to deteriorate and the cat died 3 weeks after the diagnosis. This case demonstrates the clinical findings of triaditis combined with suspected malignant hepatobiliary tumor.

  • Angiomyolipomas are hamartomatous lesions consisting of smooth muscle bundles, thick-walled blood vessels, and mature adipocytes. They are usually found in the kidneys of tuberous sclerosis patients and more rarely in other organs, such as the liver, the oral cavity, the sinonasal tract, the heart, the large intestines, the lungs, and the skin. Cutaneous angiomyolipoma has shown to be very rare and generally occurs at the ends of the digits, the elbows, the ears, and the nose. Herein, we report the first documented case of angiomyolipoma of the glabellar region.

  • This paper analysed the characteristics of current density induced inside human body by 60 Hz extremely low frequency magnetic fields according to varying conductivities of human model. Human model was composed of several organs and other parts, whose shapes were expressed by spheroids or cylinders. Organs such as the brain, heart, lungs, liver and intestines were taken into account. Applying the boundary element method to the human model, we estimated effects on the induced current distribution due to differences of the organ conductivity and shape. We find organ conductivity influences most and a cross section area and a position of organ also gives effects.

  • This paper analysed the induced current density inside human body of hot-line worker for 765kV double circuit transmission line according to locations of human body. Human model was composed of several organs and other parts, whose shapes were expressed by spheroids or cylinders. Organs such as the brain, heart, lungs, liver and intestines were taken into account. Applying the 3 dimensional boundary element method, we calculated induced current density in case a worker was located inside and outside a lowest phase of 765 kV transmission line in which a 60% current of maximum load flowed. As results of study, we found a maximum induced current density in all organs was less than $10mA/m^2$ when a wonder was outside. As one in brain and heart was higher than $10mA/m^2$ when a worker was inside, we propose a method for lowering current density.

  • This research investigated changes in Joseon food culture mainly focusing on acceptance of Western food in the enlightenment period. Joseon intended to learn the advanced technology of the West. Through an exchange with various Western countries, the royal family and upper class of Joseon rapidly accepted foreign food and food culture. As hotels were built in Incheon and Seoul, foreign food became more widely provided, which spread to the public, accordingly, and Western style restaurants were built and spread to the Busan area besides Seoul. As Western food rapidly spread, concerns arose. Particularly, after an attempt to assassinate Gojong by inserting poison into his coffee in 1898, appeals were made concerning Western food "that should not be consumed, because it is not proper for Korean people's intestines and stomach".

  • A 12-month-old domestic rabbit died suddenly without specific clinical signs. Gross examination revealed irregular yellowish hepatic nodules with pus in the submandibular muscles, lungs, uterus, and small intestines. Histopathological examination of the liver showed granulomatous inflammation with acid-fast-positive bacteria. Mycobacterium bovis SB1040 was identified by polymerase chain reaction and spoligotyping, and Pasteurella multocida was isolated from the multiple lesions. This report demonstrates the pathological features of rare bovine tuberculosis (bTB) in a domestic rabbit, the first case in the Republic of Korea. To ensure public safety, we recommend routine monitoring of rabbits to control the incidence of bTB.

  • Allergic rhinitis characterized by stuffy nose and watery discharge is, in Oriental medicine, referred to as Bisak(鼻塞) or Bigu. This condition occurs either exogenously or endogenously, and from my clinical experience, most patients who visit my clinic have endogenous causes. The nose in Oriental medicine is closely related to the Lungs, Heart, Large Intestines, Skin, Spleen and Stomach. Therefore, the wholistic approach to allergic rhinitis is much more efficient in treating it than the mere focus-oriented treatment.
