The purpose of this study is to investigate and analyze the relationships between tidal cycles, surface landforms, and sediments of tidal flats and their resident life. The study areas are Uengdo Ri in the Garolim Bay with wide the mud flat, Doou Ri in the Youngwang tidal flat which is developed sand flat and salt field, and Gomso Bay which is developed aquaculture industry. For resident around tidal flats, sea working takes precedence over farming, and main earnings gets from tidal flats. Resident life around the tidal flats is deeply related to tidal cycles, and low water level of spring tide becomes, they are most active and get more earnings than usual day, so it seems to be periodic markets. It is usually developed shellfish aquafarms in the mud flat, the stow net fishery in the sand flat, and salt fields in the mixed flat near the coast. Also a tidal flat has specialization of economic activity, and is divided into salt field and fish-farming in the supratidal zone, shellfish aquafarm in the intertidal zone, and oyster and porphyra culture in the subtidal zone.

In order to understand the impact of the heavy-oil pollution by the 1997 Nakhodka oil spill on the intertidal macroalgal vegetation, we have been monitoring succession in the intertidal flora since 1997 at Oh-ura, Takno, and Imago-Ura Cove, Kasumi in Hyogo Prefecture, northwestern coast of Honshu, Japan. We employed two different monitoring methods: 1) The percent cover of macro-algae (seaweeds) in 1 x 1 m quadrats along 450 m intertidal transects parallel to the shoreline were assessed and recorded by photographic imaging until 2002, and for 30-40 m transects of the most heavily polluted areas in 2004 and 2006; 2) The percent cover of macro-algae in 0.5 x 0.5 m quadrats along a transect line perpendicular to the shore were recorded and all macrophytes within the quadrat were completely removed to record the wet weight of each taxon (1997-2006). Based on the monitoring data, we conclude that the high intertidal zone at Imago-ura, where a large part of the stranded oil accumulated, suffered the heaviest damage and experienced the slowest recovery. In addition, although the original status of macroalgal vegetation before the impact was not well-documented, it appeared that recovery from the damage caused by the oil pollution required four to five years.
In this paper a polarimetric airborne SAR measurement has been used to study the radar polarimetric characteristics in the intertidal area on the south coastof the Korea. The L-band NASA/JPL airborne SAR (AIRSAR) data, which were acquired on the intertidal zone during PACRIM-II Korea campaign on September 30, 2000, were used for this research. The most intertidal zones of Yeoja Bay are composed of muddy soils with high silt and clay percentage. Models of microwave scattering from rough surfaces, i.e., semi-empirical model, and Extended Bragg model, were applied to investigate the surface characteristics of intertidal zones.
Typhoon effects on macrotide open-coast intertidal sediments were investigated in the Gochang Gwangseungri sandy intertidal flat on the Korean western coast. Variations in the surface sediment texture, accumulation, and sedimentary facies were observed before and after the Typhoon Kompasu in 2010. The typhoon Kompasu landed on the southwestern coast of the Korean Peninsula and passed inland between September 1st and 2nd, 2010, respectively. Surface sediments and their accumulation before and after the typhoon were sampled and measured at intervals of 30 m along a survey line on the Gwangseungri intertidal flat. The intertidal areas were divided into high, middle, and lower tidal zones based on the mean high-wate level, mean sea level, and mean low-water level, respectively. The surface sediments of each tidal zone show rare variations in grain size and sorting of sediment texture before and after the typhoon Kompasu, whereas negative skewness values increased in the middle and lower tidal zones after the typhoon rather than before the typhoon. Surface accumulation represents deposition in the upper and middle tidal zone and erosion in the lower tidal zones after the typhoon. The accumulation decreased from the high to the lower tidal zones.
This study was performed to know the vertical distribution pattern and community structure of intertidal invertebrates at 9 sampling stations near Songacksan area located in Jeju Island from June 2000 to May, 2001. A total of 104 benthic invertebrate species was recorded during the survey period and it was composed of 50 families, 25 orders, 12 classes and 6 phyla. Among them, the most highest species richness was observed in the mollusks comprising 66.3% (69 species) and the next one in the arthropods showing 16.3% (17 species). Species diversity was largely different depending on their vertical distribution, revealing much higher in the lower intertidal zone than in the middle or upper zone, while there were no distinct differences between sampling stations. The dominant species were Nodilittorina exigua, Littorina brevicula, Pollicipes mitella mitella and Nerita japonica in the upper zone, Monodonta neritoides, Lunella coronata coreensis and Nerita japonica in the middle zone and Notoacmea schrenckii, Omphalius nigerimus, Purpura clavigera and Chlorostoma argyrostoma lishckei in the lower zone. The macrobenthic fauna surveyed could be divided into two groups based on their species similarities between sampling stations but their differences were not distinctive.

The coastal waters and the adjacent coastal lands strongly influenced by each other and includes islands, transitional and intertidal ares, salt marshes wetlands and beaches. We focus on the coastal zone because of its unique geographical characteristics, Its ecological and economic importance, and the increasing pressures on its integrity. Our coastal zone have been controlled individually about 50 of a different kind of laws, as a result, to reach an individual purpose of the laws, people have developed the coastal zone without considering environmental condition, which brought about ecological destruction, pollution and devastation of the coastal areas. Finally, In 1999, the Coastal Management Act and the Wetlands Conservation Act were established and hereafter the environmental concern has been increased. They will be an important role to preserve our environment of coastal zone. Here I will examine the Laws concerned with environmental management of coastal zone and indicate immanent problems of it. So, I expect that problems will be improved one by one through this paper.

Eleven protease-producing bacteria were isolated from the organisms' external shells and the inorganic materials collected from intertidal zone of Jeju Island, Republic of Korea. The samples were diluted serially, inoculated on Zobell agar plates with 1% skim milk and incubated at $20^{\circ}C$. Clear zone forming colonies were selected as protease-producing bacteria and each strain was identified based on the phylogenetic analysis with their 16S rDNA sequences. Strains JJM125, JJM129, YG47 and YG49 belong to the marine bacterial genus Pseudoalteromonas; strain JJM122 belong to the genus Microbulbifer; strains YG51, YG52, YG62 and YG63 belong to the genus Vibrio; and strain YG65 belong to genus Bacillus. Hence, the present study suggests that these protease producing bacteria could be further used to develop new varieties of protease with various biotechnological applications.

To research changes in the fish community of intertidal zones in relation to the construction of the Saemangeum tidal embankment, fishes were collected in the tide pools of Naechodo, Gunsan-si, and of Haechang, Buan-gun in Jeollabuk-do, every month from December 2002 to October 2004. Based on the fishes collected and data from previous studies show that in the tide pools of Haechang, the number of species decreased, and the dominant species is Tridentiger trigonocephalus, as before. However, in the tide pools of Naechodo, the number of species decreased, and the dominant species changed from T. trigonocephalus to Synechogobius hasta. Favonigobius gymnauchen, which inhabits sand-beds, decreased remarkably. Meanwhile, in the intertidal zone of Haechang, young black porgy were caught in large quantities, while in the intertidal zone of Naechodo, young Acanthopagrus schlegelii and Lateolabrax japonicus, which had been caught in a large amounts between 1994 and 2000, were not caught. The results are thought to show that the intertidal zone of Naechodo, Gunsan-si, had more deposits by tide flats than that of Haechang, Buan-gun, which drastically changed the habitat of its fish community.
To know the food chain of an intertidal community, feeding habits of Acanthogobius elongata were studied by analyzing stomach contents. A. elongata were monthly collected and the environment conditions of the habitat were investigated in the intertidal zone of Naecho-do, Kunsan from July 1993 to June 1994. Ratio of stomach contents to weight of A. elongata was $1.78\%$, and fullness of stomach showed a similar value to ratio of stomach contents to weight. Fullness of stomach was increased twice a day in the morning and the afternoon. The most important food item was copepods amounting to $54\%$ of the total stomach contents. Of these, Paracalanus parvus was most abundant in spring, Calanus sinicus in summer, Acartia sp. in autumn, and Calanus sinicus in winter. Degree of overlapping for the food items between seasons was not very high, except between spring and summer. There were little differences in feeding habits among the size groups. For all size groups of A. elongata, the occurrence rates of copepods, decapods, molluscs and cirriped larvae were high. As the fish grows, those of amphipods, polychaete larvae, isopods, cumaceans and stomatopods increased gradually. The importance index of the major food items was in the order of Calanus sinicus, Corycaeus affinis and Acartia sp..
To examine temporal and spatial variation in salinity and nutrients in the shallow pore water of intertidal sandflats, we measured salinity and nutrient concentrations (dissolved inorganic nitrogen [DIN], phosphorus [DIP], and silicate [DSi]) in pore water of the intertidal zone along the coastline of Jeju Island at two and/or three month intervals from May 2009 to December 2010. Geochemical parameters (grain size, ignition loss [IL], chemical oxygen demand [COD], and acid volatile sulfur [AVS]) in sediment were also investigated. The surface sediments in intertidal sandflats of Jeju Island were mainly composed of sand, slightly gravelly sand and gravelly sand, with a range of mean grain size from 0.5 to 2.5 ${\O}$. Concentrations of IL and COD in sediment were higher along the eastern coast, as compared to the western coast, due to differences in biogenic sediment composition. Salinity and nutrient concentrations in pore water were markedly different across time and space during rainy seasons, whereas concentrations were temporally and spatially more stable during dry seasons. These results suggest that salinity and nutrient concentrations in pore water depend on the advective flow of fresh groundwater. We also observed an imbalance of the DIN/DIP ratio in pore water due to the influence of contaminated sources of DIN. In particular, nutrient concentrations during rainy and dry seasons were characterized by high DIN/DIP ratios (mean-127) and low DIN/DIP ratios (mean-10), respectively, relative to the Redfield ratio (16) in offshore seawater. Such an imbalance of DIN/DIP ratios in pore water can affect the coastal ecosystem and appears to cause outbreaks of benthic seaweed along the coastline of Jeju Island.
