The west coast of the Korean Peninsula is famous for its large tidal range (up to 9 m) and vast tidal flats. With comparison the sedimentary environments of open and close tidal flat using remote sensing, we select Kanghwa tidal flat and Hwang-Do tidal flat in Cheonsu Bay. Prior to surface sediment discrimination using remote sensing, sedimentary environments including intertidal OEM, hydraulic condition, and relationship between grain size and various tidal condition are investigated. Remote sensing has the potential to provide synoptic information of intertidal environments. The objectives of this study are: (i) to generate an intertidal digital elevation model (OEM) using the waterline method of Lansat TM/ETM+, (ii) to investigate the tidal channel distribution using texture analysis, and (iii) to analyze the relationship between surface grain size by using in-situ data and intertidal OEM and tidal channel density by using high-resolution satellite data such as IKONOS and Kompsat EOC. The results demonstrate that satellite remote sensing is an efficient and effective tool for a surface sediment discrimination and long term morphologic change estimation in tidal flats.

In the present study, we investigated the physical characteristics of ground water behaviors and sediment properties in intertidal flat of Nakdong River Estuary. Variations in level and temperature of the groundwater depended on tides. And increase of river discharge led to increase in groundwater level and decrease in ground salinity at a depth of several ten cm. Difference in permeability of the intertidal flat sediments due to content of fine fraction affect velocity of groundwtaer level decrease at low tide. Furthermore, enhancement of groundwater flow due to the increase in permeability leaded to decrease of fine fraction in the intertidal flat sediments.
The Changgu Bay, a macrotidal coastal embayment of the west coast of Korea, is an area of extensive intertidal sedimentation. Three types of major sediment facies are identified based on grain size analysis: silt, sandy-silt, and silty-sand facies. It is found that intertidal sediment facies comprise a continuum of progressively finer sediments from lower flat to upper one. The X-radiography of the cores in the intertidal zone show a wide variety of physical and biogenic sedimentary structures. The major structures include bioturbation, current ripple and parallel-laminae. Bioturbations are observed in all core samples, especially in the silt flat zone. The degree of bioturbation increases laterally from sandy facies (low tide level) to silt facies (high tide level) due to favorable properties of fine mud for organisms. The ripple laminae, composed of current ripple foresets, characterize the silty-sand and sandy-silt flats. The parallel laminae are extensively bioturbated, and two types of laminae are distinguishable; thick-laminae with a thickness of 1 to 5mm and thin-laminae with a thickness of less than 1mm.
The Gochang open-coast intertidal flat is located in the southwestern coast of Korea (the eastern part of the Yellow Sea), characterized by macro-tidal range, an open-coast type, and sand substrates. This study has investigated seasonal variation in sedimentary facies of surface sediments in the Gochang intertidal flat. In the four seasons of February, May, August, and November, 2014, surface sediments of 252 sites in total were sampled and analyzed along three survey lines. The surface sediments of the Gochang intertidal flat in 2014 consisted mainly of fine-grained sand sediments showing a trend in grain size to be coarser in winter and finer in summer. Based on seasonal wave and tidal level data recorded near the study area, it was interpreted that the seasonal effects of wave were stronger than those of tide as a factor controlling surface sedimentation. High waves in winter resulted in the coarsening trend of grain size in surface sediments, whereas, during summer time, the sediments became finer by relatively low waves. Spatial sedimentary facies of the Gochang intertidal flat in 2014 represented that seasonal deviation of the upper tidal zone was larger than that of the lower tidal zone, hence sediments getting coarser in grain size and poorly sorted in the upper tidal zone. From upper to lower tidal zone, the grain size became finer and sediments were better-sorted, showing smaller seasonal deviations.
This work concerns with the biotic study of the polychaeta population in the intertidal flat, Inchon, Korea. Magelona japonica was found to be the most abundant species, comprising 54% of total organisms examined. The presence of large numbers of Magelona japonica and Sternaspis scutata, high value of species diversity indices (H(s)), and the absence of the particular pollution indicator species, except a few Prinospio pinnata, suggest that the study area appears not to be polluted during the study period.
An intertidal topography is continuously changed due to morphodynamics processes. Detection and measurement of topographic change for a tidal flat is important to make an integrated coastal area management plan as well as to carry out sedimentologic study. The objective of this study is to generate intertidal DEM using leveling data and waterlines extracted from optical and microwave remotely sensed data in a relatively short period. Waterline is defined as the border line between exposed tidal flat and water body. The contour of the terrain height in tidal flat is equivalent to the waterline. One can utilize satellite images to generate intertidal DEM over large areas. Extraction of the waterline in a SAR image is a difficult task to perform partly because of the presence of speckle and partly because of similarity between the signal returned from the sea surface and that from the exposed tidal flat surface or land. Waterlines in SAR intensity and coherence map can effectively be extracted with MSP-RoA edge detector. From multiple images obtained over a range of tide elevation, it is possible to build up a set of heighted waterline within intertidal zone, and then a gridded DEM can be interpolated. We have tested the proposed method over the Gomso Bay, and succeeded in generating intertidal DEM with relatively high accuracy.
In the present study area, a part of intertidal flat in the Seosan Bay, west coast of Korea, characteristic three dominant tidal sedimentary facies and their related several typical sedimentary structures are described, Furthermore, a possible interpretation about the time stratigraphic developments of these intertidal deposits is suggested by introducing very late Quaternary (Holocene) sea-level rise in Korean Seas.
A total of 40 surface samples(12 from the intertidal flat and 28 from the subtidal zone) from Gwangyang Bay, southern coast of the Korean Peninsula show a strong negative relationship between the total foraminiferal abundance and the ratios of the live to the total(L/T) assemblages. This suggests that the foraminiferal abundance is dependent on the dilution due to the input of detrital sediments, and that the L/T ratios show the relative rate of sedimentation in the study area. The intertidal flat and delta area are characterized by the relatively high sedimentation compared to the inner bay and shallow subtidal zone, and three major tidal channels where relatively low and no sedimentation is noted, respectively. Bathymetric occurrence of the species shows distinct boundaries at 9m, and between 21 and 30m, respectively. Cluster analysis shows three biotopes;intertidal flat including delay, inner bay and shallow subtidal zone, and major tidal channels. This suggests that these biotopes are formed by the ecology of the foraminifers as well as by the sedimentological setting of the study area. Several problems in relation to the relative rate of sedimentation inferred from the L/T ratios are briefly discussed.

A two-dimensional numerical analysis is performed for the simulation of intertidal-flat and analysis of hydraulic characteristics during seadike construction in Sae-Man-Keum tidal basin. The shallow water equations are selected as a mathematical model and the Leendertse's ADI scheme is used as the corresponding numerical model. The simulated results of tide and current by the present model agree welt with the experimenta1 results by the hydraulic Lab. or ADC (1989). In the application of the model, the possibility of rapidly varied flow analysis and the introduction of turbulence model required for more accurate hydraulic calculation at closing gap are described. The successive simulation of flooding/drying effects by a modification of the method by Stelling et al. (1986) can easily be used for the intertidal-flat analysis during tidal reclamation.

The Daehang-ri intertidal flat located the just outside of the Saemangeum dike has been reported to show new-developing flats. Based on the topographic surveys of 21 times from 2000 to 2016 by a leveling method every year, this site clearly shows variation of deposition/erosion in time and space. Deposition has consistently occurred at the rate of +3.75 cm per year at the area along the dike (Zone 1), and this tidal flat is expanding and prograding seaward. In the area of far from the dike (Zone 2), on the other hand, erosion prevails at the rate of -2.38 cm per year, and this zone tends to retreat landward. However, the erosional trend of Zone 2 has slightly slowed down since 2014. As a whole from 2000 to 2016, net deposition is recorded over 3.0 m at the upper beach and the area adjacent to the dike (Zone 1), while erosion up to 1.0 m in Zone 2. In conclusion, the results at the Daehang-ri intertidal flat clearly revealed that its topographic changes were induced by the artificial structures and water masses through its sluice gate. Counter-clockwise gyre newly created after the sea dikes construction probably results in relocating of sediment outside the dike 1 by transportation of materials eroded from the south to the north along the coast.
