  • Giemsa C-banded karyotypes of A. thunbergii, A. deltoide-fistulosum, A. cyaneum and A. cyaneum var. deltoides were analyzed, and the interspecific relationships were investigated on the basis of the C-banding patterns. The banding pattern of each species was unique and made possible an easy and clear separation among them. A. thunbergii and A. deltoide-fistulosum revealed very close banding relationship but a. cyaneum and A. cyaneum var. deltoides showed significant difference in banding pattern in spite of their close plant systematic position.

  • C-banded karyotypes in A. anisopodium, A. sacculiferum, A. deltoide-fistulosum and A. splendens were investigated. The chromosome compositions were diploid of 2n=16 in A anisopodium and A. splendens, and teiraploid of 2n=32 in a. sacculiferum and A. deltoide-fistulosum. The bands were distributed in telomeric parts of the chromosomes dominantly in addition to interstitial regions sporadically, resulting in the specific C-banded karyo types according to the species. No centromeric band was observed in these species except only one chromosome in A. deltoidefistulosum. The interspecific relationship based on the C-band distribution will be discussed.

  • In this paper, the author gave a brief review on the meaning and background involving the growth of chemical ecology. Semichemicals which might be developed as insect control techniques incorporating in IPM program were described. The relevant semichemicals were grouped under separate topics including intraspecific semiochemicals, or pheromones (sex pheromones, alarm pheromones, and epidiectic pheromones), and interspecific semiochemicals, or allelochemics (allomones of Plant origin, and kairomones favoring natural enemies). Here, the author dealt with those of practical aspects only. The prospects of chemical ecology in insect pest management were also proposed.

  • These studies were conducted to compare the external morphologies of 15 species of land snails in 8 genera of family Bradybaenidae in Korea. Principal component analyses of 15 species can be divided into five groups based on the morphological characters and the result of cluster analyses were in accord with the principal component analyses. The morphological intraspecific similarity of Nesiohelix samarangae of Mitan and Cheju population(S=0.999) proved to be highest. The degree of interspecific similarity between Aegista(Plectotropis)divesa and Aegista(plectotropis)quelpartensis(S=0.970)were more similar than the other interspecies.

  • The family Ulvaceae species are difficult to distinguish from one another on the basis of morphological and cytological criteria alone. ITS2 sequences are hewn to evolve quickly and have been reported to be useful for the study of intraspecific and interspecific variation and biogeography in algae (Bakker et al., 1992). We will here describe the basic characteristics of the ITS2 sequences in Ulva and Effteromorpha to compare our result with the above previous studies. (omitted)
