Deburring of Intersection Holes (교차구멍 에서의 디버링)

  • A new design for deburring tools for intersecting holes is introduced. The tool tip is mounted on a slender cantilever assembled into a circular shank. The tool tip has been design to cover ranges of exit angle and diameter ratio between intersecting holes. The design is an improvement over the previous ones by the authors. Experiments have been performed on AL6061. With the new design, mild exit burrs with exit angles greater than 45$^{\circ}$ are successfully removed. For large burrs with smaller exit angles, however, the deburring could be incomplete.

  • Internal capacity of a refrigerator is an important indicator for design and purchasing criteria. The components facing the internal space may have holes or gaps between parts. In traditional way, design engineers manually remodeled the parts to fill the holes and the gaps for enclosed boundary of the internal space. Then they calculated internal volume by subtracting the assembly of parts from its enclosing volume. However, filling holes and gaps is not an automated process requiring a plenty of labor and time. In this research, we have developed a voxel-based method to estimate the internal volume of a refrigerator automatically. It starts transforming all components facing the interior space into voxels and fills all holes and gaps automatically by the developed hole-filling algorithm to form a completely closed boundary of the assembly. Then, it identifies the boundary voxels that are facing to the internal voxels with any part of the component. After getting the intersection points between the boundary voxels and the surfaces of components, it generates the boundary surface of triangular facets with the intersection points. Finally, it estimates the internal volume by adding volume of each tetrahedron composed of a triangle of boundary surface and an arbitrary point.

Boundary Node Detection in Wireless Sensor Network (무선 센서 네트워크의 경계노드 검출)

  • This paper proposed an algorithm that detects boundary nodes effectively in wireless sensor network. A boundary node is a sensor that lies on the border of network holes or the outer boundary of wireless sensor network. Proposed algorithm detects boundary nodes using only the position information of sensors. In addition, to improve detect performance, sensor computes the overlap area of nearest sensor first. Simulation is performed to validate the process of the proposed algorithm. In Simulation, several obstacles are placed and varying number of sensors in the range of 500~1500 are deployed in the area in order to reflect real world. The simulation results shows that proposed algorithm detects boundary nodes effectively that are located on the border of holes and the outer boundary of wireless sensor network.

Determination of Cutting Conditions for an Efficient Deburring Process Using a New Deburring Tool (새로운 디버링 공구를 이용한 드릴링 버의 효율적 제거를 위한 가공조건 선정)

  • For efficient deburring of burrs that form inside mechanical parts after drilling, new special deburring tool was developed specifically for the burr found at intersecting holes. In this paper, the process for finding ideal cutting conditions has been carried out to identify the efficient performance of deburring using a new tool. The burrs at the entrance and exit surface were analyzed for efficient removal. The surface roughness after deburring was also reviewed for better performance. In addition, the influence of the feed rate on deburring quality was analyzed for improved productivity. Through this process, a new deburring tool can be applied effectively to remove burrs formed at intersecting holes.

Assembly performance evaluation method for prefabricated steel structures using deep learning and k-nearest neighbors

  • This study proposes an automated assembly performance evaluation method for prefabricated steel structures (PSSs) using machine learning methods. Assembly component images were segmented using a modified version of the receptive field pyramid. By factorizing channel modulation and the receptive field exploration layers of the convolution pyramid, highly accurate segmentation results were obtained. After completing segmentation, the positions of the bolt holes were calculated using various image processing techniques, such as fuzzy-based edge detection, Hough's line detection, and image perspective transformation. By calculating the distance ratio between bolt holes, the assembly performance of the PSS was estimated using the k-nearest neighbors (kNN) algorithm. The effectiveness of the proposed framework was validated using a 3D PSS printing model and a field test. The results indicated that this approach could recognize assembly components with an intersection over union (IoU) of 95% and evaluate assembly performance with an error of less than 5%.

Automatic Generation of the Input Data for Rapid Prototyping from Unorganized Point Cloud Data (임의의 점 군 데이터로부터 쾌속조형을 위한 입력데이터의 자동생성)

  • In order to generate the input data for rapid prototyping, a new approach which is based on the implicit surface interpolation method is presented. In the method a surface is reconstructed by creating smooth implicit surface from unorganized cloud of points through which the surface should pass. In the method an implicit surface is defined by the adaptive local shape functions including quadratic polynomial function, cubic polynomial function and RBF(Radial Basis Function). By the reconstruction of a surface, various types of error in raw STL file including degenerated triangles, undesirable holes with complex shapes and overlaps between triangles can be eliminated automatically. In order to get the slicing data for rapid prototyping an efficient intersection algorithm between implicit surface and plane is developed. For the direct usage for rapid prototyping, a robust transformation algorithm for the generation of complete STL data of solid type is also suggested.

A Robotic Vision System for Turbine Blade Cooling Hole Detection

  • Gas turbines are extensively used in flight propulsion, electrical power generation, and other industrial applications. During its life span, a turbine blade is taken out periodically for repair and maintenance. This includes re-coating the blade surface and re-drilling the cooling holes/channels. A successful laser re-drilling requires the measurement of a hole within the accuracy of ${\pm}0.15mm$ in position and ${\pm}3^{\circ}$ in orientation. Detection of gas turbine blade/vane cooling hole position and orientation thus becomes a very important step for the vane/blade repair process. The industry is in urgent need of an automated system to fulfill the above task. This paper proposes approaches and algorithms to detect the cooling hole position and orientation by using a vision system mounted on a robot arm. The channel orientation is determined based on the alignment of the vision system with the channel axis. The opening position of the channel is the intersection between the channel axis and the surface around the channel opening. Experimental results have indicated that the concept of cooling hole identification is feasible. It has been shown that the reproducible detection of cooling channel position is with +/- 0.15mm accuracy and cooling channel orientation is with +/$-\;3^{\circ}$ with the current test conditions. Average processing time to search and identify channel position and orientation is less than 1 minute.

Optimization of Drag-sail Storage Inspired from Blossom Method (개화형상을 모사한 가항력 돛 수납최적화)

  • In this paper, we propose a new folding method (the blossom method) to increase storage efficiency of drag-sail. To resolve the issue caused by increase in the thickness of the sail, we allowed margin space (offset) along the folding line and made holes at the intersection of offset lines to prevent distortion of film. In addition, to verify applicability of the blossom method, we fabricated quarter of the sail by using Mylar film and conducted a deployment experiment. If the blossom method is applied, storage ratio (storage volume: deployed area) is 1: 68.64, that is approximately 1.88 times more than the z-fold method of folding sailing.
