The construction market became generally opened to overseas and the domestic construction industry has competed with the international construction enterprise of which technical knowledge is superior. In order to compete with the international construction companies, domestic construction industry needs more continuous promotions on the research and development for improving the level of technique of the construction engineering to meet the international norm. This study aims to suggest the better standards of engineering output such as drawings and specifications to correspond the changing integration system and bidding system in preparation for growing international competition. The study starts with comparison and analyses of domestic and international methods and standards for preparing design drawings. And it continues to delve into actual drawing preparation practices, especially focusing on the ones for road and subway construction. Finally, the study presents a better way of the standardization of the main drawings such as general plan, longitudinal drawing, cross section, structural drawings and temporary structure for new bidding systems of historical cost estimation and whole specification tender and for promotion of international competitiveness.

For international projects in general and the projects in the Gulf area in Particular, the most common cause of construction disputes and claims is construction delay. This paper will present different surveys to identify the causes of delay, the parties responsible, and how delay can be avoided. This paper will outline how these factors impact damage assessment and entitlement. Furthermore, a case study will be presented to show how the responsibility and damages due to delay are assessed and how entitlements are calculated.

This paper presents the results of a statistical analysis and its research findings focusing on the learning aspect in the process of international joint ventures (IJVs). The contents of this paper is derived from a sample of 96 field cases based on a proposed conceptual model of effective learning for international construction joint ventures (ICJVs). The paper presents a brief review on the conceptual model with hypotheses and summarized the key results of statistical analysis including factor and multiple regression analysis for the testing of the validity of the proposed conceptual model and its associated research hypotheses. Among other research findings, the research confirms that ICJVs provides an excellent platform of in-action learning for construction organization and suggests that good outcomes in learning could be reaped by a company who has a clear learning intent from the beginning and subsequently take corresponding learning actions during the full process of the joint venture.

Needs of automation and computerization in the construction industry has been recognized but the implementation of e-business solutions with project management systems has not been fully explored. In order to cope with different management practices in home office and project sites, integration of two popular systems, Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and Project Management System (PMS) is essential. The objective of this study is to find ways to functionally and systematically integrate ERP and PMS. With the integration of ERP and PMS, a project will be managed much more efficiently and effectively. It is expected that this study will benefit system integrators and help them to understand construction management processes and integrate the solutions with minimized programming work.

There are many contract patterns in the international construction market, such as CM, EPC, PM and so on. To be geared to international standards, the Construction Ministry of P.R.C improved the laws and regulations related to the construction contract. Therefore, some international contract patterns are available in China now, but the application of the international contract patterns is still in the early stage, At the same time South Korea has made a great achievement to use the international contract patterns in the practical projects. This pater carried out a study to identify differences of construction contract patterns between these Chinese construction market and Korean construction market, and to learn from each other to gain more experiences.

Project-based joint ventures are often used in the construction industry to assemble an organization that meets a client's project needs and matches or exceeds the capacities of competitors. The joint venture / partnerships provides the means for a firm to quickly add resource, political, technical, or other required strengths that will increase project acquisition. This paper sets out to study the types of joint ventures, different issues or problems while having joint ventures and the critical factors that contribute to successful joint ventures. A questionnaire was designed and administered to survey the issues and present practices of joint ventures in the South Florida construction industry. Along with the questionnaire, personnel interviews were also conducted to get first hand knowledge about the subject matter. The results are presented in the paper. These results specifically identify the overall practice of joint ventures in South Florida as well as indicate the most significant factors leading to failure or success of these ventures.

Cost management always being the matters for project manager as well as other entities involved the construction projects. Vietnam is emerging country, many construction works were carried out and lot of construction projects will be developed in the near future with a huge investment capital come from outside and inside Vietnam. In recent years, international project management firms enter the Vietnam construction market, some issues emerged need to be solved. In which cost and schedule of the construction project was put in a thoroughly consider of not only project management team but also stakeholders. The research attempts to identify and assess the relationship of factors affecting the construction cost in construction phase in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Five main factor groups Owners/clients; Consultants; Contractors; Resource and Other were identified to propose the solution for cost management.

International construction projects are exposed to various and complicated risk factors stemming from different political, economical, social, and cultural backgrounds, which make contractors entering into international construction to experience severe losses. It implies that overseas markets do not necessarily secure the high return, which is typically expected to in the high risky attempts. Accordingly, contractors need to evaluate various risk factors faced with overseas construction projects that can possibly aggravate the profitability. This paper aims at establishing a valid groundwork for further research on developing the integrated risk management model. For this end, it analyzes the long-term trend of profitability on total of 3,487 projects performed by Korean global contractors in world-wide construction markets during the last four decades. Then, it investigates the possible factors/causes of bad profit that have affected the profitability significantly through the structured surveys of 90 real overseas projects based on the project-specific information and experiences of Korean contractors in overseas markets. Furthermore, it analyzes relative importance of these factors/causes and identifies the important features expected for the risk management of international construction projects. Finally, vital distinctions between success and failure projects and lessons learned to improve profitability are then distilled.
