Objectives: The purpose of the study was to investigate the relationship between oral health locus of control and oral health behavior promotion in the adolescents. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was completed by 493 high school students in Jeonju by convenience sampling from March to June, 2014. The questionnaire consisted of fourteen questions of oral health locus of control, fifteen questions of oral health behavior promotion, and seven questions of the general characteristics of the subjects. Data analysis was done by frequency analysis, t-test, ANOVA, and Duncan's multiple range test. Results: Oral health behavior promotion and oral health behavior index of internal locus of control showed a positive correlation, Higher internal locus of control showed a positive oral health behavior promotion. The higher propensity of oral health on the external locus of control showed the negative effects. Conclusions: The oral health internal locus of control was closely related to better oral health behavior in the adolescents.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to identify the status of performance on standard precautions among nursing students and to examine the mediating effects of internal health locus of control on the relationship between awareness and performance on standard precautions of hospital-acquired infection control. Methods: The participants in this study were 134 nursing students. The measurements included a standard precautions awareness and performance scale, and a multidimensional health locus of control scale. Data were analyzed using independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, $Scheff{\acute{e}}$ test, Pearson correlation coefficient, and simple and multiple regression techniques. Mediation analysis was performed by the Baron and Kenny's method and Sobel test. Results: The mean score of standard awareness, standard performance, and internal health locus of control about standard precaution were $174.30{\pm}9.08$; $169.48{\pm}12.04$; and $20.43{\pm}2.82$; respectively. There was a positive correlation between standard awareness and performance (r=.414, p<.001). Also, standard awareness was significantly correlated with internal health locus of control (r=.413, p=.014). Internal health locus of control showed partial mediating effects in the relationship between awareness and performance. Conclusion: The results indicate a need to improve the internal health locus of control of nursing students. Therefore, an internal health locus of control improvement program should improve performance on standard precautions for patients and themselves.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the relationships among health locus of control, resilience, social support, and health promoting behavior in patients with coronary artery diseases. Methods: This study utilized a descriptive correlational design using a survey method. The subjects were 165 coronary artery disease patients at the cardiology out-patient clinic of the C university hospital. Data were collected through Health Locus of Control Scale, Resilience Scale, ENRICHD Social Support Instrument, Health Promoting Lifestyle Profile scale. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient and hierarchial regression. Results: There were significant positive bivariate correlations of health promoting behavior with internal health locus of control, doctors health locus of control, resilience and social support respectively, and correlation between resilience and social support. Among predictors, internal health locus of control (${\beta}$=.28), social support (${\beta}$=.28) and resilience (${\beta}$=.25) had statistically significant influences on health promoting behavior. Conclusion: These results proposed that internal health locus of control, social support and resilience have important influences on health promoting behavior. Nursing interventions to enhance internal health locus of control, resilience and social support might be essential for patients with coronary artery disease in order to promote their health behaviors.
This study was to investigated the relationship between health locus of control and health promoting behavior of College students. For this study, questionnaires were given to 300 students in the H University of Seoul and collected during the period from Nomber 17 to November 24, 1994. Health locus of control and health promoting behavior were measured by using the MHLC scale and a modified HPLP scale. Healthiness of life style is parameterized by self actualization, health responsibility, exercise, nutrition, stress management, and internal support. The data were analyzed using the statistics package SAS, yielding frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's Correlation. The result of this analysis are as follows: 1. Among the components of health locus of control, internal health locus of control showed the highestscore (mean: 3. 12, standard deviation: 0.46). Powerful others health locus of control followed next with the mean of 2. 30 and the standard deviation of 0.44. Chance health locus of control showed the mean of 2.29, and the standard deviation of 0.43 2. The HPLP mean score and the standard deviation of practice of health promoting behavior were 2.51 and 0.31 respectively. 3. HPLP correlated positively with internal health locus of control (r= 0.20, p<.01) and powerful others locus of control (r= 0.21. p<.001). However, HPLP inversely correlated with chance locus of control (r=-0.13, p<.05) 4. The demographic variables representing sex (t= 2.26, p<.05), health status (F = 5.52, p<.01) showed connections to health promoting behavior. Therefore, nurses should consider health locus of control when they take care of College students to improve such health promoting behavior as self actualization, exercise, internal support, stress management, and health responsibility. Further research is required to discover factors influencing health promoting behavior of College students.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare health locus of control with health-promoting behaviors according to elementary school children's degree of obesity, and to analyze correlations between two variables. Methods: Three hundreds and sixty three elementary school children were participated from three elementary schools in Seoul. Multidimensional Health Locus of Control (HLOC) scale and Health Promoting Lifestyle Profile (HPLP) were used. Results: Obese children was 16.8% of all research subjects. Internal HLOC in over weight group was higher than normal weight group (F=3.611, p=.014). Chance HLOC in under weight group was higher than other groups (F=3.553, p=.015). External HLOC in over weight and obesity group was higher than normal weight group (F=3.553, p=.015). Correlations between HLOC in internal and external and health-promoting behaviors were significant (r=.347, p<001; r=.207, p<001). Also, children who did not have siblings and have obese parents showed higher rate of obesity, and lack of sleeping time tend to be related to obesity. Conclusion: External HLOC of obesity children is higher than that of normal weight children. Meanwhile, obese children with higher internal HLOC were good at doing health-promoting behaviors. Therefore, if obese children are trained for internal health control, it can lead to their health-promoting behaviors.
Background: The purpose of this study was to investigate the associations among the internal health locus of control, depression, perceived health status, self efficacy, social support, and health-promoting behavior in Iranian breast cancer survivors and to determine influential variables. Materials and Methods: A predictive design was adopted. By convenient sampling the data of 262 breast cancer survivors in Iran were collected by questionnaires during 2014. Data were analyzed applying descriptive statistics, t-tests, one-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and stepwise multiple regression. Results: The internal health locus of control, depression, perceived health status, self efficacy, social support and undergoing chemotherapy all correlated significantly with the health-promoting lifestyle. Stepwise multiple regression analysis revealed that social internal health locus of control, depression, perceived health status, self efficacy and social support and chemotherapy accounted for about 39.8% of the variance in health promoting lifestyle. The strongest influence was social support, followed by self efficacy, perceived health status, chemotherapy and depression. Conclusions: The results of the study clarifed the seriousness of social support, self efficacy, perceived health status and depression in determining the health-promoting lifestyle among Iranian breast cancer survivors. Health professionals should concentrate on these variables in designing plans to promoting a healthy lifestyle.
Based on King's goal attainment theory, this research deals with applying nursing intervention of mutual goal settings to gastrectomy patients. It tests the effects of nursing intervention, according to the patients' health locus of control, suggested as external boundary criteria for the theory by employing a quasi-experimental design which consists of a pretest-posttest non-equivalent control and experimental groups. The subjects of this research were 62 gastrectomy patients hospitalized at Y medical center and the experimental and control groups consisted of 31 subjects. The experimental group received nursing intervention at the mutual goal setting of 5 times from the day before the surgery to the 5th day after the surgery, while the control group received only routine nursing care. Recovery indicators of both groups were measured and compared. Measurement variables included patients' characteristics, health locus of control, forced vital capacity, forced expiratory volume in one second, peak expiratory flow, bowel movement recovery, mobility recovery, level of pain, patients' stress and patients' satisfaction. Data were analyzed using SPSS statistical package and the hypotheses were tested by ANOVA and ANCOVA. Results of the analyses are summarized as follows : 1) Internal health locus of control had higher effects of the nursing intervention of mutual goal setting than external health locus of control on pulmonary ventilatory functions of forced vital capacity, forced expiratory volume in one second, and peak expiratory flow. 2) There was no statistically significant difference in the effects of nursing intervention of mutual goal setting on the bowel movement recovery between the internal and external health locus of control. 3) There was no statistically significant difference in the effects of nursing intervention of mutual goal setting on the mobility recovery between the internal and external health locus of control. 4) There was no statistically significant difference in the effects of nursing intervention of mutual goal setting on the level of pain between the internal and external health locus of control. 5) There was no statistically significant difference in the effects of nursing intervention of mutual goal setting on the level of stress between the internal and external health locus of control. 6) There was a statistically significant difference in the effects of nursing intervention of mutual goal setting on the level of satisfaction with provision of nursing information between the internal and external health locus of control, and there was no statistically significant difference in the effects of nursing intervention of mutual goal setting on the level of satisfaction with outcome of nursing between the internal and external locus of control. On the basis of the research results, the following are recommended : 1) Repeated research on responses to health locus of control is necessary. 2) Not only the effectiveness of nursing intervention in acute recovery periods, but also the long term effects are to be investigated. 3) The development of instruments is needed to accurately measure mutual goal setting regarding postoperative deep breath, coughing, early ambulation, etc. so that the relationship among the postoperative recovery indicators may be explored. 4) It is required that an instrument be developed to measure perception which facilitates goal attainment in the interactive setting between patients and nurses.
The purpose of this study is to identify the relationship among injury prevention practices, health locus of control, and response patterns to HLOC of the elderly. Subjects were 121 healthy elderly. The data had been collected from November 5 to 18 in 2001 and analyzed with descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation and stepwise multiple regression. Health locus of control and injury prevention practices were measured by using MHLC scale and an instrument created by the researcher on the basis of the results of literature review respectively. The results of this study were as follows: The mean score of injury prevention practices was 2.80 and the mean scores for the health locus of control were internal health locus of control : 17.25, external health locus of control : 16.09, and chance health locus of control : 14.26. The response patterns of the HLOC identified were six types; pure internal, pure powerful others, pure chance, double external, believers in control, and complex control. The 'pure internal' was the largest group(35.5%), and the 'believers in control' was the next(31.4%). The relationship between internal health locus of control and the injury prevention practices of the elderly revealed a significant correlation(r=.215, p=.018). The relationship between external health locus of control and the injury prevention practices of the elderly revealed a significant correlation (r= .208, p=.022). There was significant difference between response patterns of the health locus of control and injury prevention practices(F=2.393, p=.042). There were significant differences between injury prevention practices and general characteristic factors, which were education, family type, administration of medication, injury experience, ADL, and self-directed search for health information. Self-directed search for health information, injury experience, and education explained 16.7% of the variance for injury prevention practices. The above results may be used as the basic data for seeking more efficient way of improving safety of the elderly.

The purpose of this study is to explore the relationships between hope, health locus of control and general health of nursing students. The subjects of this study were 161 female students of National Nursing School in Seoul. Data was collected through a questionnaire from May 11 to May 23, 1998. The tools used for this study were Hope scale developed by Miller and Power, Multidimensional Health Locus of Control Scale developed by Wallston and Wallston and General Health Scale(Modified Conel Medical Index) developed by Nam Ho Chang. Data were analysed in an the $SPSS/pc^+$ program using frequency for the demographic characteristics, 1-test and ANOVA for relationship between the variables and demographic characteristics and for it's differences of hope and general health control. Peason correlation coefficient for relationship between the 3 variables, hope, health locus of control, and general health. The results of this study were as follows ; The 1st hypothesis : that 'Between hope, health locus of control (HLC) and general health of nursing students will have positive relationship', was supported(=.2883, p=.000). The 2nd hypothesis; that 'The hope score of nursing students in HLC-internal group will be higher than others' was supported(F=5.22, p=.0063). The 3rd hypothesis ; that 'The general health of nursing students in HLC -internal group will be higher than others' was accepted(F=2.94, p=.0554). The 4th hypothesis ; that 'Hope, HLC and general health of nursing students according to demographic characteristics will be different ' was accepted in part. o In hope the more age, the higher score. o In HLC the group of non religious have higher score(t=-2.02, p=.045). o No experienced addmission was revealed HLC-internal group(t=-1.91, p=.058). o Non religious group has a tendency to dependent upon on powerful other person(t=-1.99, p=.049). o The hope score of nursing students was very high(4.49/6point). o The general health status of nursing students was vert good(92.88/114point). o Most of nursing students was in HLC-internal group(81.4%). o The most frequent complaints of nursing students was dizziness suddenly developed(68.4/114point), very nervous in small thing(67.83/114) and very nervous to others critics(68.4/114) in turn. In conclusion, the students who have high score of hope, in HLC-internal group have good general health. Hope inspiring not only makes one's good health but also makes others good health and powering hope. For good health person who are in HLC-internal group have powerful hope, keeping good health would be a good stretegy to change the student's HLC and make them good health and hope powering then it would be a good method to change the HLC to HLC-internal group.
