  • The temperature changes of dumpling(mandu) during cooking process were examined and the effects of time-temperature and/or time-size interactions on internal temperature were studied. Mandu was purchased from local markets and classified by its weight(small, medium, and large). Boiling, steaming, pan frying, and deep fat frying were adopted. Internal temperature was measured with a food thermometer in every one minute. The internal temperature of mandu increased over time in every cooking process(p<0.05). After three minutes the internal temperature of mandu in boiling, pan frying, and deep fat frying reached over at $74^{\circ}C$, which is high enough temperature to kill the harmful bacteria, but not in steaming. The internal temperature of mandu was significantly affected by cooking time, size, and both in boiling, steaming, and deep fat frying(p<0.05). There were significant differences between the internal and surface temperatures of mandu in the cooking processes except pan frying in three minutes(p<0.05). The results of this study indicate three minutes' cooking of the mandu by boiling, pan frying, and deep fat frying is safe enough to eat. However, longer steaming time is needed in order to reach safe temperature. This study also indicates the cooking time and size of mandu appear to be major factors in determining the internal temperature achieved at $74^{\circ}C$. More research is needed to check time to reach a safe temperature in the cooking process of mandu by steaming.

  • Objectives: There have been many studies reporting the clinical value of Euphorbia kansui Radix or Melonis Calyx, but few systematic studies of the changes that may occur after taking such herbal medication. This study aimed to investigate the characteristics of the patient group, possible changes in blood test and InBody test results, and to discover the current state and future direction of clinical use of Euphorbia kansui Radix or Melonis Calyx. Methods: This study investigated patients who were hospitalized at Kyung-Hee University Korean Medicine Hospital for at least two days from 1 March 2016 to 1 March 2019, specifically evaluating patients aged 19 and over who underwent blood tests, including an electrolyte test and an InBody test before and after taking Euphorbia kansui Radix or Melonis Calyx. Results: Among a total of 134 patients, 72 patients (53.7%) were treated with Euphorbia kansui Radix and 62 patients (46.3%) were treated with Melonis Calyx, in the context of previously diagnosed abnormal weight gain. Laboratory findings were that Na and K levels were significantly reduced in both groups. In an InBody test, body mass index (BMI), intracellular water, extracellular water, protein, mineral, and skeletal muscle were significantly reduced in both groups. Conclusions: From these results, we suggest that, although Euphorbia kansui Radix and Melonis Calyx may not induce serious adverse effects, attention should be paid to the electrolyte level with the use of these treatments. In terms of syndrome differentiation, more clinical uses will be available in the future.

  • Diuretic renal scan, a modified method of conventional radionuclide renography by administration of intravenous furosemide was performed in 54 patients with suspected urinary tract obstruction. Two showed normal responses, 41 showed increased washout patterns, and the remainder 15 revealed no changes in response to the furosemide administration. IVP was done in 34 patients. In comparision to the diuretic renal scan, the following results were obtained. 1) Patients with normal results by the scan, showed normal IVP findings also. 2) 10 patients who showed delayed excretory patterns not influenced by the diuretics administration. 9 patients revealed obstructive lesions and hydronephrotic changes, and CPN was diagnosed for the remainder one and the one patient without obstruction was diagnosed as chronic pyelonephritis. 3) 22 patients showed positive results to the diuretics. Among them 10 patients had positive results in IVP. but, were not related to the speed of decrement of the renal activity after the furosemide administration.

  • Objectives: This study aimed to identify whether herbal medicine improves the clinical symptoms and abnormal blood tests of a patient with fatty liver accompanied by hypertriglyceridemia. Methods: A 44-year-old man with fatty liver and hypertriglyceridemia was prescribed Saenggangunbi-tang from July 20, 2020, to November 11, 2020, to reduce fatigue and to improve laboratory findings, such as liver enzymes and the lipid profile. We observed changes in symptoms, serum levels of liver enzymes, and the lipid profile during about 4-month treatment. We also recorded changes in the bioelectrical impedance analyzer findings during that time. Results: In this case study, an approximately 4-month treatment with Saenggangunbi-tang led to considerable improvement in laboratory findings and visceral fat area. In particular, the patient experienced a noticeable decrease in triglyceride levels compared with the baseline parameters of the first visit. In addition, no side effects-including weight gain and liver enzyme increases-were observed during treatment. Conclusion: This study suggests that appropriately prescribed herbal medicine is a therapeutic option to manage fatty liver combined with hypertriglyceridemia.

  • The opiate antagonist, naloxone, was injected for the reversal of hypotension due to Korean hemorrhagic fever, and the authors observed changes in pituitary hormones. In the hypotensive phase of the Korean hemorrhagic fever, the f-endorphin was high, and normalized granually in the diuretic and convalescent period. The naloxone raised the pulse rate and the blood pressure within 30 minutes without change in the central venous pressure. Around 30 minuted after the injection of the naloxone, the $\beta-endorphin$, ACTH and cortisol rose. The prolactin fell down 60 minutes after the naloxone injection.

  • This study is designed to investigate the effects of Samul-Tang extract on the response of lactic dehydrogenase(LDH) release, cellular activity, lipid peroxidation, DNA synthesis and the changes of total protein of bovine pulmonary artery endothelial cells(PAEC) from hydrogen peroxide$(H_2O_2)$-induced injury. The results are as follows : 1. Samul-Tang significantly decreased $H_2O_2$-induced release of LDH from injured bovine PAEC. 2. Samul-Tang significantly repressed $H_2O_2$-induced cellular activity from injured bovine PAEC. 3. Samul-Tang significantly repressed $H_2O_2$-induced lipid peroxidation from injured bovine PAEC. 4. Samul-Tang significantly stimulated DNA synthesis in bovine PAEC. 5. Samul-Tang significantly repressed $H_2O_2$-induced changes of total protein volume from injured bovine PAEC. Above results suggest that Samul-Tang can protect bovine PAEC from $H_2O_2$-induced injury. These results can be effectively applied to the prevention and cure of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases.
