As office automation appliances and communication equipments are adopted in office buildings, internal heat gains increase gradually. When making simulation model, internal heat gains are usually set up with standard values or ignored. Therefore, the impact of the internal heat gains has been ignored or not been focused although it is recognised as significant contributor to heating/cooling load of buildings. This study focused on the impact of internal heat gains on curtain wall buildings. the amount and schedules of heat internal gains profiles not only affect the profiles of heating/cooling loads, but also make impact on reducing the effectiveness of high performance glazing systems. It is important to identify internal heat gains profiles before considering the installation of high performance glazing systems.
Reinforcement of insulation in apartment buildings reduces the heating and cooling energy consumption by lowering the heat transfer in the building envelope. There are differences between internal and external insulation methods in heat transmission properties. However, some building load calculation programs cannot analysis the differences between the two. This is because these programs do no account for the timelag or thermal storage effect of the wall according to the location of insulation. In this study, the heat transmission characteristics of internal and external insulation were analyzed by EnergyPlus, and heating and cooling energy demand was compared. The results showed that external insulation system had lower heating and cooling loads than internal insulation system. Also the heat transfer rate of external insulation is steadier than internal insulation. About 13.6% of heating and cooling energy demand decreased when the outdoor wall was finished with external insulation compared to the demand with internal insulation.
College of Architecture, Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, GA, US Abstract The intermittent heating and cooling energy need calculation of the ISO 13790 monthly method was examined. The current ISO 13790 method applies a reduction factor to the continuous heating and cooling need calculation result to derive the intermittent heating and cooling for each month. This paper proposes a method for the intermittent energy need calculation based on the internal mean temperature calculation. The internal temperature calculation procedure was introduced considering the heat-balance taking into account of heat gain, heat loss, and thermal inertia for reduced heating and cooling period. Then, the calculated internal mean temperature was used for the intermittent heating and cooling energy need calculation. The calculation results from the proposed method were compared to the current ISO 13790 method and validated with a dynamic simulation using EnergyPlus. The study indicates that the intermittent heating and cooling energy need calculation method using the proposed model improves transparency of the current ISO 13790 method and draws more rational outcomes in the monthly heating and cooling energy need calculation.
About 70% of energy input to internal combustion engine is rejected to atmosphere by heat. By utilizing this waste heat, a plenty of energy can be conserved in nationwide. One of possible ways is the thermoelectric generation to utilize engine's waste heat to provide auxiliary electric power. Under th is concept, we have been developing the thermoelectric generation system to replace the alternator by converting the waste heat in the engine's exhaust directly to electricity This system may reduce the shaft horse power of the engine, then improves the vehicle fuel economy and the exhaust emissions. In the present study, the characteristics of the electric energy and exhaust heal energy in city and highway mode driving conditions are analysed by using a gasoline passenger car. These results would be used to determine the optimum design parameters of the thermoelectric generation system.
The purpose of this study is to analyze heating and cooling load variation due to envelope retrofits in an old school building. In a previous study, envelope retrofit of an old school building resulted in annual energy consumption reduction. However, cooling energy consumption increased with the envelope retrofit. This is because of high internal heat generation rates in school buildings and internal heat cannot escape through windows or walls when the envelope's thermal performance improves. To clarify this assumption, thermal performance changes due to envelope retrofits were analyzed by simulation. Results revealed indoor temperature and inner window surface temperature increased with high insulation level of windows. Indoor heat loss through windows by conduction, convection and radiation decreased and resulted in an increase of cooling load in an old school building. From results of this study, energy saving impact of envelope retrofits in an old school building may not be significant because of high internal heat gain level in school buildings. In case of replacing windows in school buildings, local climate and internal heat gain level should be considered.
This paper addresses the optimal design of dividing wall distillation column which is rapidly applied in a variety of chemical processes over recent several years because of its high energy saving efficiency. A general dividing wall column model which can cope with the heat transfer through the dividing wall is developed using rigorous computer simulation. Based on the simulation model, the effects of the internal recycle flow distribution around the dividing wall and the heat transfer across the dividing wall on overall system performance are investigated. An improved method is suggested to utilize the heat transfer through the wall to optimal column design. The suggested method is compared with the existing method via. simulation study and shows more improved energy saving result. Several control strategies for the divided wall column are tested and the optimal control strategy is propose

Organic Rankine cycles (ORC) can be used to produce power from heat at different temperature levels available as geothermal heat, as biogenic heat from biomass, as solar or as waste heat. In ORC working fluids with relatively low critical temperatures and pressures can be compressed directly to their supercritical pressures and heated before expansion so as to obtain a better thermal match with their heat sources. In this work thermal performance of ORC with and without an internal heat exchanger is comparatively investigated in the range of subcritical and transcritical cycles. R134a is considered as working fluid and special attention is paid to the effect of turbine inlet pressure on the characteristics of the system. Results show that operation with supercritical cycles can provide better performance than subcritical cycles and the internal heat exchanger can improve the thermal efficiency when the temperature of heat source becomes higher.
About a Structure is performance external insulation is fundamantal performance for enrgy-saving. these day, most of residential structures have constructed by internal insulation method structure. The method structure internal insulation have construction and economical efficiency, but on the other hand, be generated heat loss by heat bridge especially, be generated loss heat-energy logical consequence in structure ondol. The external insulation structure method has a mert able to minimum to loss heat about heat-bridge. But the external insulation technique is unsatisfactory statues within the know-how and method of construction and materials compared with developed countries. The recently, the requirement of market related to the external insulation technique is resulted by the energy efficiency system, but it can lead to the lack of alternative technique In study on the korea type passive house building design for insulation block method of wall system has to experimental characteristic heat-energy of practice building. In result field-experimental, the heat-bridge appeared to characteristic spent heat-energy of blow 2L class and have a suffience performance it.
The serpentine internal passage is located in turbine blade and it shows the variety heat transfer distribution. Especially, the Coriolis force, which is induced by blade rotation, makes different heat transfer distribution of the leading and trailing surfaces of serpentine internal passage. The different heat transfer is one of the reasons why the serpentine cooling passage shows low cooling performance in the rotating condition. So, this study tried to design the advanced the serpentine passage to consideration of the Coriolis force. The design concept of advanced serpentine cooling is maximizing cooling performance using the Coriolis force. So, the flow turns from leading surface to trailing surface in advanced serpentine passage to match the direction of Coriolis force and rotating force. We performed numerical analysis using CFX and compared the existing and advanced serpentine internal passage. This design change is induced the high heat transfer distribution of whole advanced serpentine internal passage surfaces.
