  • Patients with acute pyleonephritis may present with a spectrum of clinical symptoms and signs. There are few noninvasive diagnostic studies, however, to confirm or exclude this diagnosis. To evaluate the clinical utility of $^{99m}Tc-DMSA$ renal scan in diagnosis of acute pyelonephritis, we performed $^{99m}Tc-DMSA$ renal scan in 37 patients suspected with urinary tract infection. Simultaneously, kidney ultrasonography was done in 21 patients diagnosed with acute pyelonephritis, clinically. And we performed the followup scan after treatment in two to six weeks. The results were as follows: 1) $^{99m}Tc-DMSA$ renal scan disclosed single or multiple cortical defects and decreased radiouptake ratio of affected kidney in 23 patients among 25 patients diagnosed with acute pyleonephritis. 2) In the 21 patients with acute pyelonephritis, kidney ultrasonography showed abnormal finding in the 7 patients. And $^{99m}Tc-DMSA$ renal scan disclosed abnormal cortical defects in this 7 patients also. 3) Between the patients with acute pyelonephritis and those with lower urinary tract infection, asymptomatic bacteriuria or pyuria. right-to-left radiouptake ratios (R/L ratio) were significantly different (p < 0.001). 4) In two to six weeks after antibiotic therapy, we performed followup $^{99m}Tc-DMSA$ renal scan for 5 patients among 25 acute pyelonephritis patients. And we have found the improvement of cortical defects and the right-to-left radiouptake ratio. In conclusion, we thought that $^{99m}Tc-DMSA$ renal scan should be useful in diagnosis of acute pyelonephritis and follow-up examination.

  • This paper deals with the effect of radial parameters in cogging process such as reduction in height (Rh) and rotational angle ($\theta$) of a billet on a void closure for large forged products. Usually closing and consolidation of internal void defects in a ingot is a vital matter when utilized as large forged products, using a press with limited capacity and the sizes of the ingots becoming larger. Consequently, it is important to develop cogging process for improvement of internal soundness without a void defect and cost reduction by solid forging alone with limited press capacity. For experiments of cogging process, hydraulic press with a capacity of 800 ton was used together with a small manipulator which was made for rotation and overlapping of a billet. Size of a void was categorized into two types; $\emptyset$ 6.0 mm and $\emptyset$ 9.0 mm to investigate the change of closing and consolidation of void defects existed in the large ingot during the cogging process. Also open void and closed void in the ingot were tackled to show the differentiation of closing process of internal voids with respect to void sizes. In this paper systematic configuration for closing process of void defects were expressed based on this experiment results in the cogging process.

  • Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry(ESPI) is one of optical technique to measure displacement precisely, uses CCD camera to show result image in real time. General ESPI system measures in-plane or out-of-plane displacement. Shearography is one of electronic speckle pattern interferometric methods which allow full-field observation of surface displacement derivatives and it is robust in vibration. The shearography provides non-contacting technique of evaluating defects nondestructively In this study, the shearography was used to evaluate defects in Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic(CFRP). Various sizes of artificial defects were embedded in various depths of woven CFRP plate. Effects due to the variation of size and depth of defects were evaluated in this study.

  • Pipe and Pressure Vessels that is used in power plant and chemical industry have many Internal Defects that is corrosion caused by the flow of fluid. These Internal Defects that have possibility of explosion are very dangerous because it can not see from the outside. This days many companys using NDT method to find an Internal Defect. Most of the NDT methods have limitations that are constraint of shape and materials. But Sheargoraphy have many advantages compared conventional NDT method. It has very fast measuring speed, non-destructive and non contacting measurement. As well as it hasn't constraint of shape and materials. As a paper on the analysis of measurement of error, the important factors were the Shearing Amount and pressure, and discovered measurement of the Internal Defect of the object by using shearography. The optimal Shearing Amount and pressure was discovered and utilized.

  • In this paper, the concept of infrared thermography(IRT), the principle of measurement of IRT and how to set up the IR camera for the nondestructive testing are described in detail. Also, its utilization and non-destructive testing(NDT) diagnosis are reviewed. By performing the periodic non-touched WDT through the estimation of thermal patterns related with the temperature for the surface targeted, IRT can be applied to the early prevention of the device failure. For the diagnosis utilization, thermal imaging patterns obtained from IRT for heated blocks with internal defects were estimated through the lion-destructive method and discussed the way of IRT estimation from the analysis of characteristics between material defects and thermal imaging patterns.

  • Internal defects are mainly caused by a corrosive action and degradation in the pipe used in a nuclear power plant or factory. The ESPI method have the many advantages when compared with conventional method. The advantage are the area measurement ability at one time and non-contact measurement ability in the real-time. In this paper, we studied on the measurement of a internal defect by using out of plane ESPI technique. Here, we compared the experimental results using out of plane ESPI with the FEM results.

  • The density and strength of wood is affected by degradations and defects, such as voids and knots. Old wooden structures such as traditional cultural properties have been deteriorated by these types of defects. They were evaluated by a visual observation that is difficult to evaluate the inner deterioration in structures. In this study, three nondestructive testing techniques were investigated to detect the wooden structural members. Ultrasonic stress wave tests, drilling resistance tests and visual inspections were used to examine the structural wood members. Patterns of Resistograph using by drilling resistance tests could indicate the features of internal wood such as voids, knots, decay, fungi, and so on. The technique just like as ultrasonic stress wave tests, however, difficult to detect exactly area where small amounts of internal deterioration in logs are. In spite of results of ultrasonic stress wave test, the internal deterioration of wooden structural members could be evaluated by the relationship between ultrasonic stress wave tests and drilling resistance tests.

  • In order to assure the reliability and integrity of structures such as bridges, Power and petrochemical plants, nondestructive evaluation techniques are recently playing more important roles. Among the various kinds of nondestructive evaluation techniques, ultrasonic technique is one of the most widely used methods for nondestructive inspection of internal defects in structures. For the reliable quantitative evaluation of internal defects from the experimental ultrasonic signals, a numerical analysis of ultrasonic scattering field due to a defect distribution is absolutely required. In this paper, the SH-wave scattering by multi-cavity defects using elastodynamic boundary element method is studied. The effects of shape of defects on transmitted and reflected fields are considered. The interaction of multi-cavity defects in 50-wave scattering is also investigated. Numerical calculation by the boundary element method has been carried out to predict near field solution of scattered fields of ultrasonic SH-wave. The presented results would be useful to improve the sensitivity of flaw defection for inverse analysis and pursue quantitative nondestructive evaluation for inverse problem.

  • A submarine has a pressure hull that can withstand high hydraulic pressure and therefore, requires the use of highly advanced shipbuilding technology. When producing a pressure hull, periodic inspection, repair, and maintenance are conducted to maintain its soundness. Of the maintenance methods, Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) is the most effective, because it does not damage the target but sustains its original form and function while inspecting internal and external defects. The NDT process to detect defects in the welded parts of the submarine is applied through Magnetic particle Testing (MT) to detect surface defects and Ultrasonic Testing (UT) and Radiography Testing (RT) to detect internal defects. In comparison with RT, UT encounters difficulties in distinguishing the types of defects, can yield different results depending on the skills of the inspector, and stores no inspection record. At the same time, the use of RT gives rise to issues related to worker safety due to radiation exposure. RT is also difficult to apply from the perspectives of the manufacturing of the submarine and economic feasibility. Therefore, in this study, the Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT) method was applied to propose an inspection method that can address the above disadvantages by designing a probe to enhance the precision of detection of hull defects and the reliability of calculations of defect size.
