  • Simplified finite element model of spark ignition (SI) engine to analyse combustion heat transfer is presented. The model was discredited with 3D thermal elements of global length 5 mm. The fuel type is petrol. Internal nodal temperature of cylinder body is defined as 21000C to represent occurrence of gasoline combustion. Material information and isotropic material properties are taken from published report. The heat transfer analysis is done for the instant of combustion. The model is validated by comparing the computed maximum temperature at the piston surface with the published result. The computed temperature gradient at the crucial parts are plotted and discussed. It has been found that the critical top surface suffered from thermal and the materials used to construct the engine parts strongly influenced the temperature distribution in the engine. The model is capable to analyze heat transfer in the engine reasonably and efficiently.

  • A mathematical model has been developed to describe the turbulent and reversed flow with convective heat transfer in a cylindrical combustion chamber. By using the mathematical model for high temperature flow enables the trends in overall heat transfer rates to be predicted. The model was applied to the design of the combustion chamber. The influences of the size of air inlet and inlet velocity were investigated for process optimization. Through modelling work it is found that the heat transfer rate to the chamber wall may be enhanced by adjusting the air flow and heat transfer pattern through selecting the air inlet condition. Internal plate has less influence to the heat transfer characteristics.

  • The objective of this study is to develop a new oil combustion technology concerning industrial furnaces and kilns, not only to save energy but also to reduce environmental emissions. Of many kinds of such technologies we chose the high temperature air combustion technology which was initiated by the British steel company in '80s and developed further by the American burner company "North American". In this study it was carried out to test regenerative burner experimentally and to have an applicability to industry. From the variation of configuration of gas nozzle and hot test on the temperature distribution and NOx, it was found out that the reduction of NOx was due to the effect of internal gas recirculation, which will be caused by air emitting velocity from burner nozzle.

  • Homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) was the best concept able to provide low NOx and PM in diesel engine emissions. This new alternative combustion process was mainly controlled by chemical kinetics in comparison with the conventional combustion in internal combustion engine. In this paper, detailed kinetic reaction mechanisms of diesel surrogate was investigated to understand the diesel HCCI engine combustion. It was tested two existing mechanisms and two new mechanisms for the comparison of experimental result. The best mechanism for diesel surrogate was suggested through this comparison.

  • BSCCO (2223) compound which has the highest temperature of transition to the superconducting state in the homologous series considered is synthesized by SHS. The method exploits self-sustaining solid-flame combustion reactions which develop very high internal material temperatures over short periods. This report introduces the SHS method and its advantages and discusses its application in the synthesis of superconducting materials.

  • An experimental investigation has been conducted to study the spray and combustion characteristics using the air-assisted twin fluid atomizer. Axial mean and fluctuating velocity components as well as drop-size distributions in non-reaction spray were measured with a nonintrusive phase doppler technique. Droplet number density distributions were also visualized using high speed CCD camera. Locations of spray and flame boundaries are obtained by direct photographic method. It is confirmed that at the fixed fuel flow rate, the increase of the atomizing air flow causes improvements on both spray and combustion characteristics under stable flame conditions. Internal group combustion modes where flame is located inside the spray boundary are observed to exist in the upstream region of higher droplet number density.

  • Efficient numerical analysis of combustion induced by premixed swirl multi-burners in a gas turbine combustor is conducted by adopting swirler model. By analyzing the internal recirculation zone, the inner and outer diameters of the swiler are determined to be 28 mm and 76mm to 28mm, respectively. Tangential velocity of 35m/s is determined from swirl and recirculation angles. With swirler model adopted, the predicted temperature of combustion gas agrees well with that from single-burner calculation without the model. But, NOx emission is underestimated by 60 %.

  • Knock and misfire, kinds of abnormal combustion, are highly undesirable effect on the internal combustion engine. So, it is important to detect these avnormal combuition and control the ignition timing etc. to avoid these mal-effect factors in real engine system. In this study, the system which detects the knock and the misfire using by spark plug is presented. This system is based on the effect of modulation breakdown voltage(BDV) between the spark gaps. The voltage drop between spark plug electrodes, when an electrical breakdown is initiated, depends on the temperature and pressure in combustion chamber. So, we can detect knock and misfire that produce changes in gas temperature and pressure (consequently, its density) using by BDV signal change which carries information about the character of combustion.

  • In this study, the effects of variation in cam phasing and valve lift of exhaust valves by using Cam-in-Cam system on combustion and emission characteristics for diesel engine were investigated under GT-POWER simulation environment. This paper showed analytic result of combustion characteristics and diesel exhaust valve's control with GT-Power 1-D detail model. As a result, it was found that volumetric efficiency and IMEP were decreased as the exhaust valve opening and closing timing is advanced due to its internal EGR effects. Also, it was found that NOx emission were decreased as EVC timing was retarded. These show that the retarding the exhaust valve closing and opening while keeping the duration at constant can be effective for controlling AFR and mixing rate in diffusion combustion of diesel engine.

  • The present study was conducted to investigate the flame instability(evaluated by Markstein length and cellular instability) and laminar burning velocity in a constant volume combustion chamber at room temperature and elevated pressure up to 0.3 MPa to suggest the possibility of utilizing mixtures of syngas added DME-air premixed flames in internal combustion engines. The experimentally measured laminar burning velocities were compared to predictions calculated the PREMIX code with Zhao reaction mechanism. Discussions were made on effects of syngas addition into DME-Air premixed flames through evaluating laminar burning velocity, Markstein length, and cellular instability. Particular concerns are focused on cellular instability caused by hydrodynamic instability and diffusive-thermal instability.
