  • In this paper, we have studied narrow-band analog pre-distortion linearization technique using UHF 400 MHz band 20 W power amplifier. The analog pre-distorter used the SC1894 radio frequency power amplifier linearizer(RFPAL) provided by MAXIM Corp and through the look-up table technique confirmed the intermodulation distortion(IMD) performance and the adjusted channel leakage ratio(ACLR) improvement for bandwidth below 1 MHz which does not operate on existing chips. In the 400 MHz (400 ~ 500 MHz) band, IMD performance and the ACLR improvement of up to 17.46 dB based on 1-channel offset and up to 16.6 dB based on 2-channel offset were confirmed. In the system requiring the same linearity, we confirmed power efficiency improvement of 12.41% at output power of over 40 W.

  • This paper proposes a novel memory effect measurement technique in RF power amplifiers(PAs) using a two-tone intermodulation distortion(IMD) signal with a very simple and intuitive algorithm. Based on the proposed predistortive tone cancellation technique, the proposed measurement method is capable of measuring the relative phase and magnitude of the third-order and fifth-order IMDs, as well as the fundamental signal. The measured relative phase between the higher and lower IMD signal for specific tone spacing can be interpreted as the group delay(GD) information of the IMD signal concerned. From the group delay analysis, we can conclude that an adaptive control of GD as well as the magnitude and phase is a key function in increasing the linearization bandwidth and the dynamic range in a predistortion(PD) technique.

  • In this paper, a new approach to estimate nonmlinear distortions (second-harmonic, second-intermodulation, third-harmonic, and third-intermodulation) in digital communication systems is proposed. In contrast to the relatively common sine-wave input approach which requires repetition of the same experiments by changing frequencies of oscillators and filters over the band of frequencies of interest, the proposed approach uses digital random input (transmitted signal in digital communication system) to adaptively estimate parameters of a nonlinear channel in time-domain. Nonlinear distortion of the channel is estimated on line by transforming the estimated parameters into frequency-domain. Comparison between the classical two-tone input approach and the proposed approach is made through computer simulation.

  • In this paper, we investigate the relationship between the intermodulation signal of 2-tone and CDMA spurious emission of HPA. And confirm that the fifth IMD signal of HPA has more important effect upon CDMA ACPR characteristics than the third IMD signal. We present the method for the power amplifier to satisfy the 2-tone and CDMA specification simultaneously, and that is to use the predistorter for improving the third IMD signal of 2-tone for the power amplifier which is tuned to satisfy the CDMA specification and not to satisfy the 2-tone specification. The result by using the method which is presented from this paper shows that the ACPR is improved about 2 dB for CDMA 1FA(frequency allocation) signal and the third IMD signal is improved about 20 dB for CW 2-tone signals and we confirmed the specification is satisfied simultaneously.

  • In this paper, 30 W power Amplifier for IMT-2000 repeater was developed gain flatness and the third IMD (Intermodulation distortion) by Microwave absorber. The absorption ability of the absorber is measured up to -10 ㏈ and -4 ㏈ at 3.6 ㎓, 2.3 ㎓ band respectively. Non using absorber power amplifier has the gain over 57 ㏈, the gain flatness of ${\pm}$0.33 ㏈ and the third IMD of 27 ㏈c at 33.3 W output. Otherwise, using absorber power amplifier has the gain over 58㏈, the gain flatness of less than ${\pm}$0.9, the third IMD over 29 ㏈c at the same output power. As a result, the characteristic of the different type show improvement of 1 ㏈ in gain, 0.3 ㏈ in Gain flatness and 1.77 ㏈c in IMD.

  • The linearity of the GaAs FET power amplifier(PA) is greatly influenced by source and load impedance for the FETs. The third order intermodulation products, IM3, from the GaAs FET PA are investigated in relation with source and load impedance. From heuristic as well as analytic point of view, e.g., Volterra series analysis, is employed to analyze the effects of nonlinear circuit elements, gate-source capacitance, $C_{gs}$, and drain-source current, $I_{ds}$. The sweet spots where soure and load impedance produce the least intermodulation products are calculated and compared with the load and source pull data with good agreements. It also shows that source impedance has a greater effect on the intermodulation products than the load impedcnce.

  • In radio-over-fiber (RoF) systems, nonlinear compensation is essential to improve performance. Among the several existing nonlinear compensation techniques, we investigate a predistortion technique for a directly modulated laser in an RoF system. First, we obtain the input-to-output response of a directly modulated laser at 160, 820, and 1,540 MHz. The results show that the laser response is dependent on the frequency band. Second, we design an optimal predistortion circuit to compensate for the nonlinear responses of three frequency bands. We design the predistortion circuit with two options: each predistortion circuit for each frequency band and one single predistortion circuit for all the three frequency bands. Finally, we present the simulation results of the predistortion system obtained using a commercial simulator. These results show that the third intermodulation distortion (IMD3) is improved by 0.6-9 dB for the three frequency bands with only a single predistortion circuit.

  • We simulated 3rd order intermodulation distortion (IMD3) induced Carrier-to-Intermodulation Ratio (CIR) of laser diodes over a wide range of optical modulation index, and compared the results with commercial IMD3 induced CIR specification such as Composite Triple Beat (CTB) of DFB laser transmitter for CATV networks. It shows that the simulation results are in good agreement with the CATV CTB specification within 3dB margin. The results can be used to predict IMD3 induced CIR performance for various analog optical transmission systems with given optical modulation index and the number of transmission channels.

  • A post-linearization technique for the differrential CMOS LNA is presented. The proposed method uses an additional cross-coupled common-source FET pair to cancel out the third-order intermodulation ($IM_3$) current of the main differential amplifier. This technique is applied to enhance the linearity of CMOS LNA using $0.18-{\mu}m$ technology. The LNA achieved +10.2 dBm IIP3 with 13.7 dB gain and 1.68 dB NF at 2 GHz consuming 11.8 mA from a 1.8-V supply. It shows IIP3 improvement by 6.6 dB over the conventional cascode LNA without the linearizing circuit.

  • In this paper, the technique of analysis and optimization on the Passive intermodulation(PIM) in a filter using coaxial transmission resonator, is presented. The developed simulation technique can reduce PIM power without the degradation of the linear filter response, through the variation of filter dimensions. The increase of PIM in filter is depended on currents flowing through each resonator forming filter. The reduction of these currents therefore makes the reduction of PIM power.
