  • The performance of a newly designed wastewater treatment process equipped with an anaerobic and two intermittent aeration tanks operated alternately was investigated. During the experimental period, several types of cyclic operating schedules with different aeration and non aeration time were examined for the optimization. At all modes, the removals of organic matter and SS were highly achieved. With respect to T-N removal, however, the cycle length for aeration on/off affected the efficiencies. At the optimal operating mode, the ORP bending point indicating the disappearance of nitrate was observed. Considering the influent wastewater characteristics and cyclic operating schedules, it can be suggested that T-P removal is much more BOD/T-P ratio and/or its load dependant rather than the aeration on/off time. The results obtained from pilot-scale test showed the competitive advantage of this alternating process through an omission of nitrate recycle and operational flexibility against influent load variations when comparing with other continuous flow processes.

  • This study addressed soil disturbances following harvesting as well as soil physical and hydrological properties within three first-order headwater catchments characterized by ephemeral-intermittent streams. Four treatments representing a range of potential Best Management Practices(BMPs) for ephemeral-intermittent streams were used; BMP1, BMP2, clearcut and reference. This study includes 1 year of pre- and post-harvest observations. Results showed that post-harvest disturbances were closely related with harvesting intensity and generally tended to reflect changes in soil physical and hydrological properties following harvest with the except of bulk density and porosity. Forest clearcutting decreased macroporosity and saturated hydraulic conductivity, and increased soil resistence as a result of severe soil disturbances thereby increasing soil erosion. These impacts were reduced by implementing two BMP treatments during harvesting activities. The finding support the use of either BMP treatments for ephemeral-intermittent streams, however, the additional measure of leaving logging debris in BMP2 did not cover enough soil surface to reduce erosion.

  • The intermittent spray characteristics of a multi-hole diesel nozzle with a 2-spring nozzle holder were investigated experimentally. Without changing the total orifice exit area, the hole number of the multi-hole nozzle varied from 3 (d$\_$n/=0.42 mm) to 5 (d$\_$n/=0.32 mm). The time-resolved droplet diameters of the spray including the SMD (Saute. mean diameter) and the AMD (arithmetic mean diameter), injected intormittently from the multi-hole nozzles into still ambient ai., were measured by using a 2-D PDPA (phase Doppler particle analyze.). The 5-hole nozzle spray shows the smaller spray cone angle, the decreased SMD distributions and the small difference between the SMD and the AMD, compared with that of the 3-hole nozzle spray. From the SMD distributions with the radial distance, the spray structure can be classified into the three regions : (a) the inner region showing the high SMD distribution , (b) the mixing flow region where the shea. flow structure would be constructed : and (c) the outer region formed through the disintegration processes of the spray inner region and composed of fine droplets. Through the SMD distributions along the spray centerline, it reveals that the SMD decreases rapidly after showing the maximum value in the vicinity of the nozzle tip. The SMD remains the constant value near the Z/d$\_$n/=166 and 156.3 for the 3-hole and 5-hole nozzles, which illustrate that the disintegration processes of the 5-hole nozzle spray proceed more rapidly than that of the 3-hole nozzle spray.

  • The intermittent spray characteristics of the single-hole diesel nozzle (d$\sub$n/=0.32 mm) used in the fuel injection system of heavy-duty diesel engines were experimentally investigated. The mean velocity and turbulent characteristics of the diesel spray injected intermittently into the still ambient were measured by using a 2-D PDPA (phase Doppler particle analyzer) . The gradient of spray half-width linearly increased with time from the start of injection, and it approximated to 0.04 at the end of the injection. The axial mean velocity of the fuel spray measured along the radial direction was similar to that of the free air jet within R/b= 1.0-1.5 regardless of elapsing time, and its non-dimensional distribution corresponds to the theoretical velocity distributions suggested by Hinze in the downstream of the spray flow fields. The turbulent intensity of the axial velocity components measured along the radial direction represented the 20-30% of the U$\sub$cι/ and tended to decrease in the outer region. The turbulent intensity in the trailing edge was higher than that in the leading edge.

  • An exprimental research has been carried out to find the intermittent flow pattern in the transition region of a turbulent round jet in order to elucidate detailed turbulence structure and to accumulate basic data necessary for computational turbulence modelling. Turbulent signals were processed digitally to obtain conventional or conditional velocity components. The high-order conditional correlations obtained in this study showed similar trends as those of other free shear flows. It was found that the non-turbulent fluid contributes negligibly to the turbulent kinetic energy production and its diffusive transport and that the diffusion by bulk convection has the same order of magnitude as the gradient diffusion in the free boundary region. The statistical analyses such as flatness factor, skewness factor and probability density functions of turbulent and non-turbulent zone durations have also been performed.

  • The characteristics of Prand시-Meyer expansion of supersonic flow with condensation along a wavy wall in a channel are investigated by means of experiments and numerical analyses. Experiments are carried out for the case of moist air flow in an intermittent indraft supersonic wind tunnel. The flow fields are visualized by a Schlieren system and the distributions of static pressure along the upper wavy wall are measured by a scanning valve system with pressure transducers. In numerical analyses, the distributions of streamlines, Mach lines, iso-pressure lines, and iso-mass fractions of liquid are obtained by the two-dimensional direct marching method of characteristics. The effects of stagnation temperature, absolute humidity, and attack angle of the upper wavy wall on the generation and the locations of generation and reflection of an oblique shock wave are clarified. Futhermore, it is confirmed that the wavy wall plays an important role in the generation of an oblique shock wave and that the effect of condensation on the flow fields is apparent.

  • The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of application methods in ultrasound on skin temperature and muscle blood flow. Thirty healthy volunteers without known vascular problems participated and randomly divided into three groups such as continuous wave group (CWG) which received a ultrasound treatment of continuous-wave, intermittent wave group (IWG) which received a ultrasound treatment of intermittent-wave at a dosage of $1.5\;W/cm^2$ for a duration of 5 minutes, and placebo group (PG) which received a ultrasound treatment of no-wave and no-dosage ultrasound to the anterior forearm. Blood flow and skin temperature was measured using MP 150 before and after ultrasound administration. The results were as follows : 1. Administration of ultrasound in all groups had increased effect on skeletal muscle blood flow immediately after treatment and for up to 10 minutes posttreatment. 2. CWG and IWG showed increased skin temperature immediately after a ultrasound administration and maintained to 10 minutes posttreatment. PG showed increased skin temperature immediately after a ultrasound administration but returned to initial state to 10 minutes posttreatment. 3. The great change on skeletal muscle blood flow among three groups showed in CWG ($6.27{\pm}1.72$) and then displayed in PG ($5.12{\pm}1.66$) and IWG ($4.61{\pm}2.19$) in order. 4. The vast change on skin temperature among three groups showed in CWG and then IWG and PG in order.

  • In this study, we present a noble study far membrane transport models using chlorine resistance of polyamide RO membranes. Membrane transport mechanism is investigated by the comparison of membrane permeation performance under the continuous and Intermittent operation modes with mixed feed solution containing NaOCl and NaCl. Analysis of permeation performance indicates that solution-diffusion model and preferential adsorption-capillary flow model are relatively efficient according to operation mode. Under the continuous flow state, mass transfer depends on preferential adsorption-capillary flow model rather than solution-diffusion model. On the other hand, it prefers solution-diffusion model to preferential adsorption-capillary flow model under the stationary state. SEM images of NaOCl treated membrane surfaces strongly support these conclusions. These surface images reveal that NaOCl treated membrane in continuous operation mode exhibits ridge and valley structure in some fraction of the surface area, whereas that in intermittent operation mode shows surface degradation entirely.

  • Numerical analysis was performed on the enzyme transport and the flow fields in order to predict the effectiveness of urokinase injection regimens in clot dissolution. The species and momentum transport equations were numerically solved for the case of uniform perfusion of enzyme into a fibrin clot for an arterial thrombus and a deep vein thrombus models. In order to predict the thrombus lysis efficiency of continuous and forced intermittent injections, enzyme perfusion and clot lysis were simulated for the different injection velocities. Intermittent injection showed faster clot lysis compared to continuous perfusion, and lysis efficiency was increased as injection velocity increased.
