Aim: The incidence of biliary tract cancer (BTC) is many-fold higher for American Indians (AI) relative to non-Hispanic whites (NHW). Neither gallstones nor genetics can account for this difference. There is speculation that certain fatty acids in bile may play a role in preventing BTC. Since diet may influence composition of bile, we compared the dietary intakes of urban AI and NHW adult women in New Mexico. Methods: Design, a cross-sectional study of the diets of lactating AI and NHW women was conducted. Setting, the University of New Mexico Hospital. Participants, healthy lactating women 18 to 39 years of age were recruited. Main outcome measures, a three-day diet record for each participant was analyzed. Results: The AI women consumed less calcium (p = 0.04) and significantly less short and intermediate chain-length fatty acids (C4-C12), but nearly twice as much proinflammatory arachidonic acid as the NHWs (p <0.01). The intake of dairy products by AI women was less than NHW women (p = 0.01) while the intake of processed meat products was higher (p <0.01). Conclusion: Dietary factors may account for the difference in the risk of BTC between AI and NHW women.
New two kinds of methacrylate monomers having a benzene ring inserted between spacer and methacryloyl group and the chiral center connected to the terminal of the mesogenic structures were synthesized. In these two series the effects for the formation of the liquid crystals in regard to the length changes of the spacers and mesogenic groups were investigated. The first series did not show any liquid crystalline phases in the intermediate compounds nor in the end products. However, the methacrylates of second series showed the liquid crystalline phases in the intermediate compounds as well as in the final products regardless of the length of the spacers.
Na, TPA-ZSM-5 with Si / Al mole ratio of about 130 was synthesized at low temperature and atmospheric pressure. These intermediate products were characterized by using XRD, XRF, FT-IR, NMR, and SEM. As a result, intermediate product were different from those that synthesized by autoclave method but spectroscopic characteristics of the final products showed to be in the typical ZSM-5 region. The defect sites were observed in the final product and removed by calcination at $540^{\circ}C$. Na, TPA-ZSM-5, aboveall, was synthesized at this condition within 48hr.
In molding of continuous fiber-reinforced thermoplastic composites, it is very difficult to impregnate between the reinforcements and the matrix since the matrix has a high melting temperature and high viscosity. Therefore, most of composite molding processes are divided in the manufacturing processes of intermediate materials called prepreg and the forming of products from intermediate materials. The divided process requires additional facilities and thermoforming, and they increase the cycle time and cost of composite products. These problems can be resolved by combining the continuous fiber-reinforced composite molding process with injection molding. However, when a composite material is manufactured by inserting woven fabric into the injection mold, poor impregnation occurs on the surface of the molded product. It affects the properties of the composites. In this paper, through an impregnation experiment using cores with different heat transfer rates and pore densities, the reason for the poor impregnation was confirmed, and molding experiments were conducted to produce composite with improved surface impregnation by inserting the mesh. And also, the surface impregnation and deformation of composites molded using different types of mesh were compared with each other.
Medicinal crops are the most representative input among agricultural products for biomaterials. The actual situation of how medicinal crops are used as inputs in the downstream industry is analyzed, and the input demand function of medicinal crops is quantitatively estimated. The proportions of intermediate demand and final demand in the total production of medicinal crops were 52.1% and 47.9% in 1995, but changed to 74% and 26% in 2019, with the proportion of intermediate demand accounting for approximately increased by 3 times. Estimation results of the demand function for medicinal crops in the medicine industry show, a 1% increase in the production of medicine is found to increase the demand for medicinal crops by 0.3369%. If the production of health functional foods increase by 1%, the demand for medicinal crops is expected to increase by 0.6221%. It is also found that a 1% increase in the amount of cosmetic production would increase in the demand for medicinal crops by 0.3932%. This indicates that market expansion in downstream industries can have a significant impact on agricultural products for biomaterials.
Thermal behavior of bromphenols was investigated by direct pyrolysis at high temperature. The thermal degradation products formed by the pyrolysis of mono-bromophenols (o-, m-, and p-) were identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. During the pyrolysis reactions, several kinds of dioxins and furans were produced, and the relative ratio of pyro-products was dependent on the substituted position of bromine in phenolic structure due to the effect of symmetry and steric hindrance. The formation of dioxins can be explained by the phenoxy radical addition and Br atom elimination at an ortho-carbon site on phenolic structure. On the other hand, the formation of furans can be explained by the ortho-ortho carbon coupling of phenoxy radicals at unsubstituted sites to form o, o'-dihydroxydiphenyl intermediate via its keto-tautomer, followed by $H_2O$ elimination. The pyrolysis temperature has also a substantial effect on the dimerized products quantities but little effect on the type of pyro-products. Moreover, the formation mechanism of pyro-products was suggested on the basis of products identified.
Intermediate moisture-apple snail products were prepared by adding glycerol, sorbitol, kiwi, or pineapple(2% or 5% w/w), as tenderizers, and by drying at $4^{\circ}C$ for 24 hr. The effects of the tenderizers on textural and sensory properties of the apple snail products at intermediate moisture levels were investigated. Moisture content and water activity of the products were ranged from 26.25 to 34.48% and from 0.83 to 0.87, respectively. The addition of glycerol significantly lowered water activity of apple snail samples compared to control prepared without tenderizers. On the other hand, significant increases in moisture content and water activity were observed in apple snail samples treated with kiwi or pineapple(p<0.05). All apple snail samples treated with tenderizers showed a lower shear force than did the control. Apple snail samples treated with 5%(v/v) glycerol showed a higher equilibrium moisture content than did the other samples. SDS-PAGE indicated that proteolytic enzymes in kiwi and pineapple clearly changed the structure of the myosin heavy chain and actin filaments of myofibrillar protein in apple snail samples. Intermediate moisture apple snail samples treated with tenderizers showed significantly improved overall sensory characteristics. The highest overall acceptability was obtained from apple snail samples treated with 5% pineapple, while the lowest overall acceptability was noted in the control sample. This study demonstrates that an acceptable apple snail, with intermediate moisture content, may be produced by using tenderizers at appropriate concentrations.
This study investigated the microbial safety of apple snails and intermediate-moisture-content apple snail products subjected to various treatments, according counts of total bacteria, Escherichia coli, mold and yeast during storage at 4C Heating of raw apple snails at 95C for 5 min increased the storage period in relation to total bacteria, E. coli, mold and yeast-cell growth. Addition of 10% NaCl and 50% vinegar increased the microbial safety of apple snails. Microorganisms were not detected for 14 weeks in vacuum-packaged intermediate-moisture-content apple snail products stored at either 4C or 30C. These results suggest that heat treatment of raw apple snails, soaking in 10% NaCl and 50% vinegar solutions, and vacuum-packaging increases the shelf-life and microbial safety of apple snail products.
This paper analyzes the size of direct and indirect impact of the information and communication technology(ICT) producing sector to the Korean economic growth We first divide the entire economy into the ICT producing sector and the ICT using sector, and estimate the contributions to the economic growth by each sector. We also try to answer the question on what the possible causes of the ICT producing sector's contribution are to growth. In oder to find the answer, we focus on the change in the relative prices of ICT products produced in the ICT producing sector and examine the long-term relations among the relative prices of ICT products, the ratio of ICT products used in the ICT using sector as an intermediate input, and the output of the entire economy. We find that the overall economic growth has been weakened but the ICT sector's contribution to the growth has increased. Specifically, the indirect contribution of the ICT producing sector, through the ICT using sector, to economic growth was greater than the direct contribution of the ICT producing sector itself. We also find a stable, long-term negative relation between the relative prices of ICT products produced in the ICT producing sector and the ratio of ICT products as an intermediate input in the ICT using sector. In addition, the decrease in the relative prices of ICT products produced in the ICT producing sector increases the use of ICT products in the ICT using sector and the output of the entire economy. These findings can be interpreted that the price decrease in the ICT products improves the production efficiency in other sectors and helps directly and indirectly, accelerating growth of the entire economy.
In this study, the oil bearing rock-sequence, U-hand-ri Formation (D.S. Lee et al., 1976), was subdivided into three members; the lower, the intermediate and the upper. The lower consists mainly of reddish purple tuff and sandy calcareous shales, the intermediate of an alternation of tuffs, sandstons, calcareous black shales, cherts and limestone and the upper of coarse grained variegated tuff and agglomerate. Oily matter was found from the black shales of the intermediate. Ten samples of black shales from drilled cores, 8 samples of black shales from different outcrops of the member, and 1 sample of grease-like seeping oil from black shales at U-hang-ri coast were chemically analyized. Among them, 9 samples contain remarkable amount of organic carbon (0.96~1.60%) and E.O.M. extract (0.176~0.718%), and mostly the bituminous material is saturated hydrocarbons as well as shown in infared spectroscopic analyses. The elemental analyses of MAE extracts and asphaltenes of some of thoese samples indicate that the transformation of organic material to crude oil is highly progressed. The authors suggest that the seeping oil and oily tinges in black shale layers are the products of natural cracking related with the igneous activities in the area nearby.
