Multi-Scaling Models of TCP/IP and Sub-Frame VBR Video Traffic

  • Recent measurement and simulation studies have revealed that wide area network traffic displays complex statistical characteristics-possibly multifractal scaling-on fine timescales, in addition to the well-known properly of self-similar scaling on coarser timescales. In this paper we investigate the performance and network engineering significance of these fine timescale features using measured TCP anti MPEG2 video traces, queueing simulations and analytical arguments. We demonstrate that the fine timescale features can affect performance substantially at low and intermediate utilizations, while the longer timescale self-similarity is important at intermediate and high utilizations. We relate the fine timescale structure in the measured TCP traces to flow controls, and show that UDP traffic-which is not flow controlled-lacks such fine timescale structure. Likewise we relate the fine timescale structure in video MPEG2 traces to sub-frame encoding. We show that it is possibly to construct a relatively parsimonious multi-fractal cascade model of fine timescale features that matches the queueing performance of both the TCP and video traces. We outline an analytical method ta estimate performance for traffic that is self-similar on coarse timescales and multi-fractal on fine timescales, and show that the engineering problem of setting safe operating points for planning or admission controls can be significantly influenced by fine timescale fluctuations in network traffic. The work reported here can be used to model the relevant characteristics of wide area traffic across a full range of engineering timescales, and can be the basis of more accurate network performance analysis and engineering.

Southward Intrusion of the East Sea Intermediate Water into the Ulleung Basin: Observations in 1992 and 1993

  • Hydrographic data retrieved in the southwestern part of the East Sea in 1992-1993 were analyzed to investigate the probability of southward intrusion of the East Sea Intermediate Water (ESIW) into the Ulleung Basin. The ESIW showed the ranges of 1 to 4$^{\circ}$C in potential temperature, 33.80-34.06 psu in salinity, and 26.9-27.3 kg/m$^3$ in potential density (${\sigma}$$_{\theta}$). The mean depth occupied by the ESIW was 170 m, where the characteristic values of the above three were 2.64$^{\circ}$C , 34.02 psu, and 27.13 kg/m$^3$, respectively. One of the most prominent features of the ESIW was that its salinity changed not only seasonally but also interannually. It was low in summer and high in winter. The salinity within the isopycnal layer of 26.9-27.3 kg/m$^3$ was closely related with the potential vorticity (${\rho}$$_{\theta}^{-1}$ f ${\varrho}$${\rho}_{\theta}$/${\varrho}$z), being in direct proportion to the salinity. This implies that the low-salinity water was thicker than the high-salinity water. The flow path of the ESIW was investigated by tracking the low-salinity or the low-potential vorticity water and by referring to acceleration potential. Careful analysis of the flow path proves that the ESIW intrudes from the north between the Korean coast and Ulleung Island into the Ulleung Basin in summer. Existence of the high-potential vorticity water in the Ulleung Basin is associated with the interruption of the inflow of low-salinity water.

Micro-computed tomographic evaluation of the flow and filling ability of endodontic materials using different test models

  • Objectives: This study compared the flow and filling of several retrograde filling materials using new different test models. Materials and Methods: Glass plates were manufactured with a central cavity and 4 grooves in the horizontal and vertical directions. Grooves with the dimensions used in the previous study (1 × 1 × 2 mm; length, width, and height respectively) were compared with grooves measuring 1 × 1 × 1 and 1 × 2 × 1 mm. Biodentine, intermediate restorative material (IRM), and mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) were evaluated. Each material was placed in the central cavity, and then another glass plate and a metal weight were placed over the cement. The glass plate/material set was scanned using micro-computed tomography. Flow was calculated by linear measurements in the grooves. Central filling was calculated in the central cavity (㎣) and lateral filling was measured up to 2 mm from the central cavity. Results: Biodentine presented the least flow and better filling than IRM when evaluated in the 1 × 1 × 2 model. In a comparison of the test models, MTA had the most flow in the 1 × 1 × 2 model. All materials had lower lateral filling when the 1 × 1 × 2 model was used. Conclusions: Flow and filling were affected by the size of the test models. Higher grooves and materials with greater flow resulted in lower filling capacity. The test model measuring 1 × 1 × 2 mm showed a better ability to differentiate among the materials.

자가 중합 복합 레진과 두 단계 산 부식 접착제의 친화성에 대한 중간 접착제와 흐름성 레진의 효과 (EFFECT OF AN INTERMEDIATE BONDING RESIN AND FLOWABLE RESIN ON THE COMPATIBILITY OF TWO-STEP TOTAL ETCHING ADHESIVES WITH A SELF-CURING COMPOSITE RESIN)

  • 이 연구의 목적은 자가 중합복합 레진과 두 단계 산 부식 접착제의 친화성에 대한 중간 접착제와흐름성 레진의 효과를 미세 인장 결합 강도를 통해 비교하는 것이었다. 20개의 발거된 대구치를 사용해 접착제와 부가적인 적용(활성제, 중간 접착제, 흐름성 레진)에 따라 XP bond 그룹 (XA, XB, XF 그룹), Prime & Bond NT 그룹 (NA, NB, NF 그룹), Optibond solo plus 그룹 (OA, OB OX 그룹)으로 나누었다. 접착제 적용 후 활성제, 중간 접착제, 흐름성 레진을 각각 적용하고 상부에 자가 중합 레진을 축성하였다. 24시간 동안 실온의 증류수에 보관 후 각 그룹당 10개의 시편을 준비하였다. 모든 시편의 미세인장 결합 강도를 측정하여 다음과 같은 결과를 얻었다. 1. 모든 그룹에서 중간 접착제와 흐름성 레진의 적용은 활성제 적용보다 더 높은 결합 강도를 보였다. 2. 선택된 방법에 관계없이, Optibond solo plus 그룹은 가장 낮은 미세인장 결합강도를 보였다. 3. 파절 양상은 대부분 접착성 파절을 보였고 일부 레진 내에서 응집성 파절을 보였다. 이번 연구의 결과로부터, 중간 접착제와 흐름성 레진의 적용이 낮은 pH를 가지는 두 단계 산 부식 접착제와 자가 중합복합 레진의 상아질 접착에 더 효과적이라 예상된다.

  • The purpose of this study is to find analytic solution of determining the optimal capacity (lot-size) of multiproduct acyclic multistage production and inventory system to meet the finished product demand under the constraint of finite intermediate storage. Intermediate storage is a practical way to mitigate the material flow imbalance through the line of supply and demand chain. However, the cost of constructing and operating storage facilities is becoming substantial because of increasing land value, environmental and safety concern. Therefore, reasonable decision-making about the capacity of processes and storage units is an important subject for industries. The industrial solution for this subject is to use the classical economic lot sizing method, EOQ/EPQ(Economic Order Quantity/Economic Production Quantity) model, incorporated with practical experience. But EOQ/EPQ model is not suitable for the chemical plant design with highly interlinked processes and storage units because it is developed based on single product and single stage. This study overcomes the limitation of the classical lot sizing method. The superstructure of the plant consists of the network of serially and/or parallelly interlinked non-continuous processes and storage units. The processes transform a set of feedstock materials into another set of products with constant conversion factors. A novel production and inventory analysis method, PSW(Periodic Square Wave) model, is applied to describe the detail material flows among equipments. The objective function of this study is minimizing the total cost composed of setup and inventory holding cost. The advantage of PSW model comes from the fact that the model provides a set of simple analytic solutions in spite of realistic description of the material flows between processes and storage units. the resulting simple analytic solution can greatly enhance the proper and quick investment decision for the preliminary plant design problem confronted with economic situation.

중·저준위 방사성폐기물 처분시설 안전성평가를 위한 입력데이터 설정 및 관리에 대한 고찰 (Preparation and Management of the Input Data for the Safety Assessment of Low- and Intermediate-level Radioactive Waste Disposal Facility in Korea)

  • 처분시설의 개발과정에서 안전성평가 문서관리는 체계적인 품질활동이 수반되어야 하며, 본 논문에서는 중 저준위 방사성폐기물 처분시설의 건설단계에 보완된 부지특성, 지하수특성, 최종설계내용 및 모니터링 입력데이터를 포함하여 Safety Case를 위한 안전성평가 입력데이터 품질보증체계를 설명하였다. 현장/실험결과데이터, 실제 설계데이터 및 적치계획, 콘크리트 물성데이터, 지하수, 기상, 지진에 대한 현장 모니터링데이터, 생태계데이터 및 핵종재고량데이터를 입력데이터 결정원칙에 따라 선별하고 안전성평가에 적용할 수 있는 데이터 관리체계를 확보하였다. 이는 향후 처분시설 안전성평가의 데이터 불확실성 저감 및 안전성 증진에 기여할 것으로 판단된다.

화재시뮬레이션(FDS)을 이용한 Double Skin 연소확대 위험에 관한 고찰 (Analysis for Fire Spread through Double Skin Facade System with FDS)

  • 본 연구는 Double Skin System의 화재 전파 위험성을 전산유체역학모델인 FDS를 이용하여 평가하였다. 화재모델링을 구현하기 위해 오피스 용도의 단위 구획공간을 화재지역으로 선정하였으며, 화재시나리오는 외창으로의 연소확대 위험 분석을 위하여 일반적으로 많이 설치되는 시스템조건들을 Case로 선정하여 분석하였다. 본 연구의 목적은 일반적으로 많이 사용되는 Double Skin System의 설치 간격에 따른 건물상층부로의 화재확대 위험성을 평가하고, 이에 따른 방화대책 등을 수립하는데 있다. 해석 결과, 더블스킨 중간층 간격이 넓을수록 상부층으로 연소확대 영향이 작은 것을 확인할 수 있었으며, 중간층 간격이 1m 미만인 경우는 발화층 상부 2개층으로 연소확대가 예상되므로 층간연소 확대 방지 시스템이 요구됨을 알 수 있다.

Genetic Characterization, Morphometrics and Gonad Development of Induced Interspecific Hybrids between Yellowtail Flounder, Pleuronectes ferrugineus (Storer) and Winter Flounder, Pleuronectes americanus (Walbaum)

  • Viable interspecific hybrids between yellowtail flounder (Pleuronectes ferrugineus, Store.) and winter flounder (Pleuronectes americanus, Walbaum) were produced by artificial insemination of yellowtail flounder eggs with winter flounder sperm. However, mean fertilization rate, hatching success and early survival up to 3 weeks post hatch were significantly lower than those of parental pure cross controls (P<0.01). Overall, cytogenetic traits (karyological analysis and estimation of cellular DNA contents using flow cytometry) of hybrid flounder were intermediate between the two parental species. Microsatellite assay was used to distinguish the parental genomes in the hybrids; in most cases, one allele was specific to each of the parents. Morphometrics assessed by body proportions indicated that hybrids generally displayed a morphology intermediate between the maternal and paternal species. Interspecific hybrids exhibited abnormal and retarded gonad development in both sexes based on histological analysis of gonads from adult fish. The sterility of the hybrids presents a significant advantage for their use in aquaculture, as potential escapees would not be capable of reproducing in the wild and contaminating natural stocks.

터보펌프-가스발생기 연계시험의 모드 변환 중간 작동점 분석 (Analysis for Operation Point Change in Mode Transition at the Turbopump-Gas Generator Coupled Test)

  • 터보펌프-가스발생기 연계시험에서 작동점 변경을 위해 거치는 중간 작동점의 특성을 시스템 모사 프로그램으로 검토하였다. 중간 작동점에서 펌프 토출압, 가스발생기 혼합비, 가스발생기 온도, 가스발생기 압력 등의 변수를 안전한 시험기 운용을 고려하여 검토하였다. 터보펌프-가스발생기 연계시험기와 엔진시스템을 비교한 결과 중간 작동점이 차이는 작지만 서로 다르고 이는 엔진 시스템에서 연소기 유량에 따른 연소압 변화가 발생하기 때문이다. 연소기 배관의 밸브 변경을 우선할 때 중간 작동점이 보다 안전한 영역에 위치한다.

멀티홉 무선망에서 목적지 기반 네트워크 코딩 가능 노드 결정 (Destination-Based Network Coding Capable Node Determination in Multi-hop Wireless Networks)

  • 멀티홉 무선망에서 플로우가 교차하는 노드의 네트워크 코딩 가능 여부를 검사하기 위한 조건인 PCC와 RFCC가 기존에 제안되었다. PCC의 경우 교차 노드가 하나인 경우에만 정확하게 동작한다. 이 문제를 해결하기 위해 RFCC는 중간 노드의 디코딩 가능성을 고려한 네트워크 코딩 조건을 정의했다. 그러나 중간 노드의 디코딩 가능성 검사와 디코딩으로 인한 코딩 연산 횟수가 증가하는 문제가 있다. 본 논문에서는 이 오버헤드를 줄이기 위해서 목적지 노드에서만 디코딩이 가능하도록 하고, 이를 위한 네트워크 코딩 조건인 DCC를 정의한다. DCC의 성능을 시뮬레이션 수행을 통해 분석한다.
