  • We present results of two-color VR photometry of the intermediate polar RXS J1803. The data were aquired using the Korean 1-m telescope located at Mt. Lemmon, USA. Different "high" and "low" luminosity states, similar to other intermediate polars, were discovered. No statistically significant variability of the color index with varying luminosity was detected. The orbital variability was found to be not statistically significant. Spin maxima timings were determined, as well as the photometric ephemeris for the time interval of our observations. The spin period variations, caused by interaction of the accretion structure with the rotating magnetic white dwarf, were also detected. These variations are of complicated character, and their study requires further observations. We determine the color transformation coefficients for our photometric systems, and improve on the secondary photometric standards.

  • Acylation of an intermediate tetrahydroxoplatinum(IV) complex, $[Pt(OH)_4(dach)]$ (dach = $trans-(\pm)-12-di-aminocyclohexane)$, with one or two kinds of carboxylic anhydrides in stepwise manner afforded various car-boxylatoplatinum(IV) complexes, $[Pt(O_2CR)\chi(OR’)4-\chi(dach)]$ (R = $(CH_2)_3CH_3$ or $C(CH_3)_3$, R’ = H or $OCCH_3$, and $\chi$ = 1-4) with a wide range of lipophilicity. The title complexes were subjected to bioassay using the murine leukemia L1210 cell line, and in particular, their in vivo oral antitumor activity was attempted to correlate with their lipophilicity and water solubility. The most orally active complex exhibited intermediate lipophilicity and water solubility, but it has been found that an exact relationship between the lipophilicity and oral anticancer activity could not be established, since the lipophilicity of the complexes is not the sole parameter to determine the oral activity. One of the important intermediate complexes partially substituted was subjected to X-ray anal-ysis for positit of the substituted group: $[Pt(OPiv)_3(OH)(dach)]$ crystallizes in the tetragonal sys-tem, space group $P42_1c$ with a = 21.161(3) $\AA$, b = 21.161(6) $\AA$, c = 12.816(3) $\AA$, $\alpha=\beta=$ r $=90^{\circ}$, V = 5739(2) $\AA^3$ and Z = 8.

  • The sizes of galaxies are known to be closely related with their masses, luminosities, redshifts and morphologies. However, when we fix these quantities and morphology, we still find large dispersions in the galaxy size distribution. We investigate the origin of these dispersions for red early-type galaxies, using two SDSS-based catalogs. We find that the sizes of faint galaxies (${\log}(M_{dyn}/M_{\odot})$ < 10.3 or $M_r$ >-19.5) are affected more significantly by luminosity, while the sizes of bright galaxies (${\log}(M_{dyn}/M_{\odot})$ > 11.4 or $M_r$ <-21.4) are by dynamical mass. At fixed mass and luminosity, the sizes of low-mass galaxies (${\log}(M_{dyn}/M_{\odot})$ ~ 10.45 and $M_r$~-19.8) are relatively less sensitive to their colors, color gradients and axis ratios. On the other hand, the sizes of intermediate-mass (${\log}(M_{dyn}/M_{\odot})$ ~ 10.85 and $M_r$~-20.4) and high-mass (${\log}(M_{dyn}/M_{\odot})$ ~ 11.25 and $M_r$~-21.0) galaxies significantly depend on those parameters, in the sense that larger red early-type galaxies have bluer colors, more negative color gradients (bluer outskirts) and smaller axis ratios. These results indicate that the sizes of intermediate- and high-mass red early-type galaxies are significantly affected by their recent minor mergers or rotations. Major dry mergers also may have influenced on the size growth of high-mass red early-type galaxies.

  • Using a method to correct redshift space distortion (RSD) for individual galaxies, we mapped the real space distributions of galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 7(DR7). We use an ensemble of mock catalogs to demonstrate the reliability of this extension, showing that it allows for an accurate recovery of the real-space correlation functions and galaxy biases. We also demonstrate that, using an iterative method applied to intermediate scale clustering data, we can obtain an unbiased estimate of the growth rate of structure $f\sigma_8$, which is related to the clustering amplitude of matter, to an accuracy of $\sim 10\%$. Applying this method to the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 7 (DR7), we construct a real-space galaxy catalog spanning the redshift range $0.01 \leq z \leq 0.2$, which contains 584,473 galaxies in the North Galactic Cap (NGC). Using this data we, infer $0.376 \pm 0.038$ at a median redshift z=0.1, which is consistent with the WMAP9 cosmology at $1\sigma$ level. By combining this measurement with the real-space clustering of galaxies and with galaxy-galaxy weak lensing measurements for the same sets of galaxies, we are able to break the degeneracy between $f$, $\sigma_8$ and $b$. From the SDSS DR7 data alone, we obtain the following cosmological constraints at redshift $z=0.1$ for galaxies.

  • The conceptual design of the MIT modular pebble bed reactor is described. This reactor plant is a 250 Mwth, 120 Mwe indirect cycle plant that is designed to be deployed in the near term using demonstrated helium system components. The primary system is a conventional pebble bed reactor with a dynamic central column with an outlet temperature of 900 C providing helium to an intermediate helium to helium heat exchanger (IHX). The outlet of the IHX is input to a three shaft horizontal Brayton Cycle power conversion system. The design constraint used in sizing the plant is based on a factory modularity principle which allows the plant to be assembled 'Lego' style instead of constructed piece by piece. This principle employs space frames which contain the power conversion system that permits the Lego-like modules to be shipped by truck or train to sites. This paper also describes the research that has been conducted at MIT since 1998 on fuel modeling, silver leakage from coated fuel particles, dynamic simulation, MCNP reactor physics modeling and air ingress analysis.

  • The manipulability of robot provides useful Information for the design and path planning of robots. This paper shows an influence of joint velocities to acceleration of robot end-effector using a dynamic manipulability polytope. The main idea of this paper is that the dynamic manipulability polytope of robot can be divided to three intermediate polytope, the torque-dependant polytope, velocity-dependent polytope, and gravity-dependant polytope. The velocity-dependant polytope is made from the limits of robot joint velocities while the torque-dependant polytope is made from the limits of the joint torques. Combining of these two intermediate polytopes and considering the gravity-dependant polytope, the overall dynamic manipulability polytope of robot is obtained. This investigation will be useful on the field of space robot and high-speed application.

  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate the demiclosed principle, the existence theorems and convergence theorems in CAT(0) spaces for a class of mappings which is essentially wider than that of asymptotically nonexpansive mappings. The structure of fixed point set of such mappings is also studied. Our results generalize, unify and extend several comparable results in the existing literature.

  • In the present paper, we have considered a layered medium of two semi-infinite nonlocal elastic solids with intermediate transversely isotropic magnetothermoelastic solid. The intermediate slab is of uniform thickness with the effects of two temperature, rotation and Hall current and with and without energy dissipation. A plane longitudinal or transverse wave propagating through one of the nonlocal elastic solid half spaces, is made incident upon transversely isotropic slab and it results into various reflected and refracted waves. The amplitude ratios of various reflected and refracted waves are obtained by using appropriate boundary conditions. The effect of nonlocal parameter on the variation of various amplitude ratios with angle of incidence are depicted graphically. Some cases of interest are also deduced.

  • Polarization of the light reflected off the Moon provides information on the size and composition of the particles in the lunar regolith. The mean particle size of the regolith can be estimated from the combination of the albedo and degree of polarization, while the color ratio of the parallel-component polarization (CP) has been suggested to be related to the amount of nanophase metallic iron (npFe^0) inside the regolith particles. Both the mean size and npFe^0 abundance of the particles have been used as maturity indicators of the regolith since sustained impacts of high energy particles and micro-meteoroids cause comminution of particles and production of npFe^0. Based on our multispectral polarimetric observations of the whole near side of the Moon in the U, B, V, R, and I bands, we compare the maps of the mean particle size, CP, and the optical maturity (OM). We find that the mean particle size map is sensitive to the most immature (~0.1 Gyr) soil, the OP map to the intermediate immaturity (a few 0.1 Gyr) soil, and the CP map to the least immature (~1 Gyr) soil.

  • Various electromagnetic fluctuations are observed in the upstream of Earth's bow shock. Properties of plasmas are important in determining the development of the fluctuations. In this study we analyze the phase space distribution functions of plasmas measured by the Cluster spacecraft to understand how the fluctuations develop. Plasmas in the upstream of Earth's bow shock often consist of multiple components, especially when the fluctuations exist. In addition to the solar wind beams, backstreaming ion beams and diffuse ions are also often observed separately or simultaneously. The solar wind beams are not much perturbed even within the fluctuations. The diffuse ions are more than 10 times hotter than the solar wind beams and the backstreaming beams intermediate between them. The distribution functions of the diffuse and backstreaming ions are anisotropic to the magnetic field. Thus, they may be responsible for the fluctuations associated with temperature anisotropy. We will discuss about the thermalization processes and the relationship between the fluctuations and plasmas.
