  • In this paper, an interleaved boost converter (IBC) with ZVT cell using a single resonant inductor in continuous conduction mode (CCM) is proposed. The IBC with the proposed ZVT cell has advantages such as a simple circuit, reduced size and low cost by using a single resonant inductor. It is more suitable for high power applications. The proposed ZVT cell circuit and principles for the IBC are explained in detail. The validity of the IBC with proposed ZVT cell is verified through experimental results.

  • Although many papers about the interleaved boost converter(IBC) have been published, there are, unfortunately, no analytical and rigorous expressions for steady-state operation of the N-phase IBC. To understand the operating characteristics of the N-phase IBC, the averaged state equation and the general steady-state solutions are derived in this paper. The general expressions of the current unbalance due to the parameter mismatch, the inductor and input current ripples, and the output voltage ripple are also presented. Through the analytical expressions presented, the steady-state characteristics of the N-phase IBC are analyzed theoretically and verified experimentally.

  • This paper introduces a new current sharing technique to Interleaved Boost Converter (IBC) using carrier slope control. The IBC is able to boost the input voltage and operates at higher current levels and has various advantages over a single power module. However, how to balance the current each module is still important problem. To solve this problem, the proposed technique can distribute the power and load current equally based on master-slave current sharing method. Unlike a conventional approach, this technique can be extended even though the current stress of switching components at slave modules is significantly smaller than that of the master module. The simulation and the experimental results are presented to show the validity.

  • Silicon Carbide (SiC) MOSFET belongs to the family of wide-band gap devices with inherit property of low switching and conduction losses. The stable operation of SiC MOSFET at higher operating temperatures has invoked the interest of researchers in terms of its application to high power density (HPD) power converters. This paper presents a performance study of SiC MOSFET based two-phase interleaved boost converter (IBC) for regulation of avionics bus voltage in more electric aircraft (MEA). A 450W HPD, IBC has been developed for study, which delivers 28V output voltage when supplied by 24V battery. A gate driver design for SiC MOSFET is presented which ensures the operation of converter at 250kHz switching frequency, reduces the miller current and gate signal ringing. The peak current mode control (PCMC) has been employed for load voltage regulation. The efficiency of SiC MOSFET based IBC converter is compared against Si counterpart. Experimentally obtained efficiency results are presented to show that SiC MOSFET is the device of choice under a heavy load and high switching frequency operation.

  • This paper presents the generalized and explicit expressions for evaluating the performance of the multi-phase interleaved boost converter (IBC) operating in discontinuous inductor current mode (DICM). The full order averaged model is derived. The generalized transfer functions of interest are presented and the dynamic characteristics are analyzed. The generalized analysis of converter performance is verified through the experimental and simulation results.

  • In this paper, an optimal selection methodology for the number of phases will be proposed for an interleaved boost converter (IBC). Also, the analysis of the input current ripple according to CCM and DCM is carried out. The proposed design methodology will be theoretically analyzed, and its validity verified by simulation as well as with experimental results. Moreover, a comparison of cost and efficiency based on a 600W laboratory prototype using the Ballard NEXA 1.2kW PEMFC system is demonstrated.
