  • Interlaminar fracture toughness of carbon/epoxy composite materials has been studied under tensile and flexural loading by the use of width tapered double cantilever beam(WTDCB) and end notched flexure(ENF) specimens. This study has significantly examined the effect of various interfacial ply orientation, ${\alpha}(0^{\circ},\;45^{\circ}\;and\;90^{\circ})$ and crack propagation direction, ${\theta}(0^{\circ},\;15^{\circ},\;30^{\circ}\;and\;45^{\circ})$ in terms of critical strain energy release rate through experiments. Twelve differently layered laminates were investigated. The data reduction for evaluating the fracture energy is based on compliance method and beam theory. Beam theory is used to analyze the effect of crack propagation direction. The geometry and lay-up sequence of specimens are considered various conditions such as skewness parameter, beam volume, and so on. The results show that the fiber bridging occurred due to the non-midplane crack propagation and causes the difference of fracture energy evaluated by both methods. For safer and more reliable composite structures, we obtain the optimal stacking sequence from initial fracture energy in each mode.

  • In this study, the interlaminar fracture toughness in mode I of a hybrid composite inserted with different types of non-woven tissues was determined. The interlaminar fracture toughness in mode I is obtained by a double cantilever beam test. The experiment is performed using three types of non-woven tissues: 8 $g/m^2$ of carbon tissue, 10 $g/m^2$ of glass tissue, and 8 $g/m^2$ of polyester tissue. Considering a specimen with no non-woven tissue as a reference, the interlaminar fracture toughness in mode I of specimens inserted with non-woven carbon and glass tissues decreases by as much as 6.3% and 11.4%, respectively. However, the fracture toughness of a hybrid composite specimen inserted with non-woven polyester tissue increases by as much as 69.4%. It is considered that the specimen inserted with non-woven polyester tissue becomes cheaper, and lighter, and the value of the fracture toughness becomes much greater than that of the non-woven carbon tissue.

  • Mixed mode interlaminar fracture behaviors of carbon fabric/epoxy composites were investigated through MMF (Mixed Mode Flexural) test by varying mixed mode ratio ranging from 20% to 90%. Mixed mode interlaminar fracture criteria based on NL point and 5% offset point were also suggested in order to predict mixed mode interlaminar fracture behaviors. Fracture surfaces and crack propagating behaviors were examined through a travelling scope and a scanning electron microscope. According to the results, mixed mode interlaminar fracture behaviors can be predicted by mixed mode interlaminar fracture criterion with m=1.5 and n=0.5 on the basis of NL point or mixed mode interlaminar fracture criterion with m=2 and n=3 on the basis of 5% offset point. Fracture surfaces and crack propagating behaviors are sensitive to mixed mode ratios. MMF test can be successfully applicable in evaluating mixed mode interlaminar fracture toughness of carbon fabric/epoxy composites.

  • For the practical use of improved interlaminar fracture toughness by interleaving carbon non-woven tissue (CNWT), intelaminar fracture toughnesses of CFRP laminates with CNWT having different weights were experimentally investigated. A suitable weight of interleaved CNWT in CFRP laminates was discussed with Mode I and Mode II tests. Mode I and Mode II interlaminar fracture toughnesses (GIC and GIIC) were obtained by DCB and ENF tests. Six kinds of specimens with CNWT were prepared. The weights of CNWT per square meter for six types of specimens are $8g/m^2,\;10g/m^2,\;12g/m^2,\;16g/m^2,\;20g/m^2$, and $24g/m^2$, respectively. The mean GIC and GIIC values of six kinds of specimens were not substantially different from one another. Compared with the CFRP specimen, the mean GIC values of six kinds of specimens were slightly decreased. But the mean GIIC values increased tremendously at least twice by interleaving CNWT. It seems that there is no interrelationship between the interlaminar fracture toughnesses (GIC and GIIC) and the interleaving CNWT weights. Consequently, it would be desirable to use the CNWT of $8g/m^2$ among the six kinds of CNWTs to take advantage of the interlaminar fracture toughness improved by interleaving CNWT, because the CNWT of $8g/m^2$ is a lightweight and low-priced material.

  • Unidirectional Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics (CFRP) are advanced materials which combine the characteristics of the light weight, high stiffness and strength. For those reasons, the use of the unidirectional CFRP has increased in jet fighters, aerospace structures. However, unidirectional CFRP composites have a lot of problems, especially delamination, compared with traditional materials such as steels and aluminums, and so forth. Therefore, the interlaminar fracture toughness for a laminate CFRP composite is very important. In this study, The mode II interlaminar fracture toughness was measured by using center notched flexure(CNF) test specimen. The CNF specimens using unidirectional carbon prepreg were fabricated by a hot-press with the gage pressure and temperature controller. And three kinds of a/L ratio was applied to these specimens. Here, we discuss the relations of the crack growth and the mode II interlaminar fracture under the four point bending CNF test. From the results, we shows that mode II interlaminar was occurred when the more $a_0$/L ratio, the less load. And $G_{IIC}$ also were obtained as 5.33, 2.9 and $0.58kJ/m^2$ according to $a_0$/L ratio=0.2, 0.3 and 0.4.

  • The Mode I interlaminar fracture toughness of woven fabric carbon/epoxy and glass/epoxy composites for a train carbody was measured and FEM analysis was conducted. The woven fabric epoxy composite manufactured by hand lay-up, has high stiffness and strength, good resistance for impact, fatigue, corrosion and in-plane failure. The DCB(Double Cantilever Beam) specimen made of woven fabric epoxy composite had the size of 180mm $\times$ 25mm $\times$ 5mm and the insert of 65mm. The Mode I interlaminar toughness of specimen was measured according to ASTM 5528-01. The crack propagation behavior of the DCB specimen was simulated using FEA with cohesive elements that model the adhesive layer between woven fabric plies.
