Conversion of the building can be a core strategy to activate the urban regeneration. Especially in the decayed district, the conversion or retrofit of old building can be a core catalyst to stimulate the urban regeneration. Throughout the case study, a conversion from office to dwelling, there were figured out the design strategies to respond to spatial, functional requirements. The results are as follows ; 1) The main design strategy is to articulate the space by embedding the wall, mass in the rectangular space. 2) to respond to the small size of space, the flexible, movable wall system Is adopted. This gives the selectiveness to the use of space. 3) to secure the livability of interior space, the buffer zone, a terrace space, is fully utilized. This space acts as thermal buffer zone as well as a semi-interior space.

The purpose of this study is to extract design concepts, especially in relation to light, as a part of extracting design concepts in architectural interior design. This study consists of two steps. Firstly, appropriate design concepts are extracted from various design characteristics. Secondly, these concepts are classified in the frame of other components of architectural space, as well as in the frame of the plastic characteristics of light. Various design characteristics were analyzed, those of which relating to the plastic character of space, namely, visual phenomenon. As a result of the analysis, 32 concepts were extracted. These concepts, in the frame of other components of architectural space (space, form, structure, opening of space, material, color, inside & outside relationship), were classified, as well as In the frame of the plastic character of Light (transparency, perception, direction, ornament). As the results of this research, the suggested design concepts will be a study material, available to the interior designers as well as students who want to utilize the organized study concepts.

The concept of non-linearity, which has been derived from a scientific paradigm, has generated new discourse in formative arts. The non-linearity enables various new possibilities such as, generation of diverse and dynamic space, creation of non-geometric form and space, and the shape in the space as it is in nature. This study percepts and explains the concepts of non-linearity and their principles in space modeling in the field of interior design, in terms of the philosophy of fractal geometry. We also analyze cases, which shows trends and specific embodiments of non-linear space modeling. This study will provide perspectives on the non-linearity as a new methods in the space modeling. For the study, we review the concept and characteristics of non-linearity, by examining various literatures, and developed an analyzing tool which was used to study various cases of Western and Korean interior Design.

Louis 1. Kahn was a wise architect who learned from history. He developed his own unique architecture by combining his creative sense with design principles and vocabularies that can be found in historical architecture. When restricting a space, he surrounded the space with thick walls as it had been done in historical buildings. The interior space encompassed by this method became a center-oriented and stable space. The objective of this study is to find the characteristics of Kahn's interior spaces by analyzing his projects in terms of space, form, daylight and materials. For this purpose, five works that are considered to have significance from the aspect of interior design were selected and analyzed. The characteristics realized through this study are as follows. A) Spatial features: 1) Generally speaking, each required space has been arranged symmetrically. 2) Being clearly defined as the main space, the subsidiary space, or the service space, each space also was placed very functionally. 3) The space encompassed by thick walls became a center-oriented, stable space. And in most case, it was characterized as a dark space. B) Formative features: 4) The space was defined as a basic solid such as a cylinder, a hexahedron, and an octagonal box, and was developed into a complex shape by the recessed windows. 5) Historical vocabularies such as an arch, a vault, and a dome were reinterpreted in new ways by kahn's own eyes. 6) Haying diverse shapes, the skylights enrich the space in terms of form. C) Daylight feature: 7) The vertical light entering through the skylights creates a solemn and mysterious atmosphere. 8) Given the shadows from the windows that change according to time, the interior space becomes a very vivid space. D) Material feature: 9) Harmonized with cold and smooth materials such as exposed concrete, metal, and glass, the interior space provides a modern atmosphere. 10) Warm appearing wood was used for furniture and part of walls or floors. The effective use of wood takes on a role that is quite complementary to the cold ambience of the smooth and cold materials. 11) With flexibility In building shapes, the concrete becomes the form-endowing materials.

In this modern world of drastic change, folding architecture was an alternative that offered a novel architectural insight. Today, the folding technique is being used above and beyond architecture, spreading to fashion, lighting, medicine, etc. Especially in the interior space design field, the folding technique is in the limelight as an alternative to create an original space for modern society. However, research and experiments into folding mainly remains at philosophical interpretation or architectural examples, and even these were mostly before the 2000s. Therefore, the present study determined it necessary to look deeply into the post-2000s folding technique focusing on interior space. In this paper, 33 cases of indoor space where folding technique appears are derived, and classified them again by use. The folding technique which was the first step of Sophia Vyzoviti's experiment on her book, "Folding Architecture" was extracted and used as the framework. We summarizes the range of application of folding techniques (interior space in general, floor, wall, ceiling, etc.) and major folding techniques by combining photographs, drawings, and descriptions of the works of the architects. This paper summarizes the characteristics of the space described comprehensively, and draws out the spatial characteristics of the modern interior space where the folding technique appears.

Space Composition should be understood an aesthetic cognition about the basis of space in different points of view. It establishes the prescribed environment of space through the hypothesis of given geometrical object. Therefore, it makes understand the cause of space composition and conceive the consistency of various elements, orders, norms and forms of space composition, Through this study, the students may build up scenarios-form the beginning to the climax of space -, directions and full stories about the space.

This study focuses 'Korean characteristics' in architectural interior design. In this study, some Korean characteristics was extracted by analysing traditional Korean spaces and as well as by considering the architectural interior spaces which are designed with Korean character since 1970. This paper started with differenciating the elements and principles that consist of space, and then classified the elements into 8 categories such as Spatial system, Enclosure system, Circulation system, Material system, Furnishing system, Light, Color, Context which are analysing frames. As a conclusion, the concepts of Korean characteristics are extracted and suggested as design concept with Korean characteristics by analysing the contents of each category. These concepts were presented with simple diagrams and supporting cases were also presented in this paper. The design concepts of 'Korean characteristics' are classified in the 25 concepts: Holonic composition, Transitional space, Hierarchy by floor level, Gradation of privacy, Changeability, Various central yards, Space with opened edges, Gray space, Continuity of space, Translucent wall, Folding-lifting wall, Skeleton, Abstract facet, Path as a message, Mild light, Multii-layered vista, Fluidity, framed scenery, Serial view, Interpenetrating Space, Harmony with nature, Organic interrelationship, Complementary Dual Structure, Temporal change of space, Hierarchical order.

Holography provides a medium for creative visual experiences in space and scale. It has been firmly established as a tool for scientific and engineering studies. It could be creatively used in interior architecture and display as a practical device and as a form of art. Basic principles and features of holography are explained. Design of the holographic systems are illustrated in some interior architectural applications. It is believed that holographic elements can make a valuable contribution to interior architecture design by controlling light and creating new concepts of colour and space.

This study investigates the effects of interior design elements on the satisfaction and preference for space. Field measurements and surveys were conducted in three coffeeshops where various interior design elements were applied. Results indicate that movable tables and chairs for two people were preferred in the space. They need to be placed flexibly according to the visitors' needs to improve satisfaction for convenience. To improve spatial satisfaction, the brightness of color applied to wall surfaces was recommended to be lower than that of color used for floor surfaces. The surfaces of space and interior design elements such as furniture also need to be kept clean. Lamps with lower color temperature were effective to enhance spatial satisfaction. Light sources should be shielded when a pendant lighting system with general diffuse type was used in space. Natural daylight through window was also required for better satisfaction level. Multiple linear regression implied that the cozy feeling by electric light, existence of daylight, flexible layouts for tables and chairs, color and quality of material for tables and floor were significant contributors to overall spatial satisfaction.

The purpose of this study is to suggest specific function of each areas and way to express reasonable interior elements within interior design of sports center in Korea. The method of this research is case study of sports center In various fields since 1980. During the study, it Is very clear that the most important points in designing of sports centers interior space to accomodate main body training areas and service area for the users. The other point is to explain within the space plan that there should be a clear understanding of general regulation for the installation element, function and behavioral facts. The social, cultural roles of sports center must have the function as a multi service facility. In summary this research is to present datas and suggestion to various areas in sports center and refine its new meaning of sports center space plan with much better designing.
