  • Mixed H$_{2}$/H$_{\infty}$ robust control synthesis is considered for finite dimensional linear time-invariant systems under the presence of diagonal structured uncertainties. Such uncertainties arise for instance when there is real perturbation in the nominal model of the state space system or when modeling multiple (unstructured) uncertainty at different locations in the feedback loop. This synthesis problem is reduced to convex optimization problem over a bounded subset of matrices as well as diagonal matrix having certain structure. For computational purpose, this convex optimization problem is further reduced into Generalized Eigenvalue Minimization Problem where a powerful algorithm based on interior point method has been recently developed..

  • The dynamic response of the human brain to direct impact was studied by three-dimensional finite element modeling. The model includes a layered shell closely representing the cranial bones with the interior contents occupied by an incompressible continuum to simulate the brain. Falx and tentorium modeled with 4 node membrane element were also incorporated. The computed pressure-time histories at 4 locations within the brain element compared quite favorably with previously published experimental data from cadaver experiments. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine the effects of the impact direction on the dynamic response of the brain in children. A parametric study was subsequently conducted to identify the model response when the age and impact site were varied.

  • This paper proposed an analytical model for the distributed magnetic field analysis of interior permanent magnet-type blush-less direct current motors under the stator-turn fault condition using the winding function theory. Stator-turn faults cause significant changes in electric and magnetic characteristic. Therefore, many studies on stator-turn faults have been performed by simulation of the finite element method because of its non-linear characteristic. However, this is difficult to apply to on-line fault detection systems because the processing time of the finite element method is very long. Fault-tolerant control systems require diagnostic methods that have simple processing systems and can produce accurate information. Thus analytical modeling of a stator-turn fault has been performed using the winding function theory, and the distributed magnetic characteristics have been analyzed under the fault condition. The proposed analytical model was verified using the finite element method.

  • The reduction of the vehicle interior noise has been the main interest of noise and vibration harshness(NVH) engineers. A passenger vehicle has various and complicated transmission paths of sound and vibration. In order to identify the mechanism of transfer path, estimation of excitation force and exact modeling of transfer path are required. This paper presents method for estimating the noise source contribution on the road noise of the vehicle in a multiple input system where the input sources may be coherent with each other. And vector synthesis technique is employed to identify the characteristics of road noise and its transmission to vehicle compartment through noise and vibration analysis. Vibration reduction efficiency of each transfer path is evaluated by comparing individual vector components obtained virtual simulation.

  • Recently many studies have been carried out to predict the characteristics of vehicle noise and to reduce the noise for enhancing the ride quality. In this study, the structural-acoustic coupling theory and the acoustic finite element theory were reviewed, and the structural acoustic coupling analysis was applied to an automobile. Because of nonuniformed lateral shape of a compartment cavity, the acoustic modes were calculated with 3-D finite element modeling. The structural modes were measured with the modal testing. Using the structural-acoustic cooling analysis, the modes which strongly coupled to the interior noise were identified and the boundary regions which could reduce noise level efficiently by structural modification were predicted.

  • The interior noise of an excavator cabin is important factor related to operation efficiency. For analyzing the cabin air-borne sound, the SEA cabin model was developed using VA One. Analysis result using measured surface SPL of cabin was compared with test data. And the noise reduction guide of cabin was suggested with contribution and sensitivity analysis results of major design variables using developed SEA analysis.

  • Tensile stress-strain and dynamic acoustic resonance tests were performed on Fe-C-Ni-Cu-Mo high-strength steels, characterized by a heterogeneous matrix microstructure and the prevalence of open porosity. All materials display the first yielding phenomenon and, successively, a continuous yielding behavior. This flow behavior can be described by the Ludwigson equation and developes through three stages: the onset of localized plastic deformation at the pore edges; the evolution of plastic deformation at the pore necks (where the austenitic Ni-rich phase is predominant); the spreading of plastic deformation in the interior of the matrix. The analytical modeling of the strain hardening behavior made it possible to obtain the boundaries between the different deformation stages.

  • For an accurate computer simulation to motor drive systems, the target mechanical load system driven by a motor needs to be model its characteristics accurately. In general, a load system is modeled simply with system parameters such as approximated system inertia and friction. So, simulation results have some errors compared with experimental results for a real load system. RecurDyn is a mechanics simulation program for 3-dimension analysis to mechanical load systems. From this program, parameters such as a load torque, a system inertia and a viscous friction can be obtained accurately which are required to model a mechanical system. Also, this program operates together Matlab/Simulink which is used to simulate electrical motor drive systems. So, an accurate simulation for the whole system with a motor drive system and a mechanical load is possible. This paper introduces an application of RecurDyn program to an electric forklift drive system using IPMSM(Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor) and examines the feasibility of co-simulation it with Matlab/Simulink.

  • In this study, inter-turn short fault models of interior permanent magnet synchronous motors (IPMSM) are developed by adding saliency modeling to surface-mounted permanent magnet motor models. The saliency model is obtained using the deformed flux models based on both fault-winding flux information and inductance variations caused by cross-flux linkages that depend on the distribution of the same phase windings. By assuming the balanced three-phase current injection, we obtain the positive and negative sequence voltages and the fault current in the positive and the negative synchronous reference frames. The output torque model is developed by adding the magnet and the reluctance torque, which are derived from the developed models. To verify the proposed IPMSM model with an inter-turn short fault, finite element method-based simulation and experimental measurement results are presented.
