The crack in a J85 engine V.G. actuator arm shaft for a bell crank on the engine compressor was investigated. The crack was observed in twenty two shafts during the inspection of 238 shafts. The failure analysis of shaft cracks was performed by chemical composition analysis using ICP(Inductively Coupled Plasma) and by fracture surface and microstructure analysis using FE-SEM and optical microscope. The crack initiated from the top and bottom and propagated to the center along the grain boundaries. From the chemical composition analysis, the fractography of the fracture surface and the microstructure, it was found that the failure mechanism of the shafts is the inclusion-related intergranular decohesion crack. The inclusion was found out from MnS particle by EDS(Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy). The crack initiated MnS inclusion in the grain boundary and propagated with the increase of applied shear stress during long operation. In order to prevent the fracture, NDI(Nondestructive inspection) is needed periodically as recommended.
Austenitic stainless steel has been investigated widely for creep strength of heat resistant material and effects of grain sizes due to various solution treatment time under constant temperature. It was studied that effects of grain sizes subject to solution treatment temperature 1100.deg. C, 1125.deg. C, 1175.deg. C, 1250.deg C, and 1300.deg. C respectively on the creep strength, fracture behaviour and fractography of SUS 316 stainless steel. The experimental results obtained were as follows. 1. The optimum grain size for the maximum creep strength did not vary with creep testing temperatures and stress levels. 2. Among various grain sizes due to different solution treatment temperature, the optimum grain size for the creep strength was found 0.044mm. Also the size showed the minimum initial strain regardless creep temperature. 3. Garofalo's equation of creep rupture life was applied well to SUS 316 stainless steel. 4. The fractography of optimum size was ductile intergranular fracture of dimple type and showed along with the increase of grain size intergranular fracture of w type.

The creep behavior and creep fracture of alumina at high temperature were investigated under four point flexural test. The steady-state creep behavior was observed at low bending stress and the primary creep until fracture was observed at high bending stress. The loading history of bending stress did not affect on the steady-stated creep rate. Intergranular fracture was dominant for fracture of alumina at room and high temperature. However, transgranular fracture was dominant on creep fracture of alumina under high temperature by nuclueation and growth of microcracks due to residual flaws or cavities in the material.
The creep behavior and creep fracture of sintered alumina at high temperature were investigated under four point flexural test. Based upon the good compatibility to neutron irradiation and high temperature water environment, austenitic stainless steels are widely used for core internal structural materials of light water reactors. But, recently, intergranular cracking was detected in the stainless steels for the core applications in some commercial PWR plants. Authors studied on the root cause of the intergranular cracking and developed the countermeasure including the alternative materials for these core applications. The intergranular cracking in these core applications are defined as an irradiation assisted mechanical cracking and irradiation assisted stress corrosion cracking. In this paper, the root cause of the intergranular cracking and its countermeasure are summarized and discussed.
Corrosion fatigue fracture of dual phase steel(SS41) and raw material steel(SS41) were investigated in 3.5% NaCl aqueous solution at PH 4,6,9 and 11. The fatigue limit of dual phase steel is increased approximately 1.8 times larger than that of raw material in air. The corrosion fatigue life of dual phase steel is about 5-10 times larger than that of raw material in 3.5% NaCl aqueous solution. The reduction of fatigue life is larger for the acidsalt solution than for the alkali salt solution. The reduction of stress level on the reduction ratio of corrosion fatigue life is large as pH 6-11. The reduction ratio of corrosion fatigue life of dual phase steel and raw material is nearly coincided at pH 2. While at pH4-2 the reduction ratio of corrosion fatigue life only depends on the corrosion effect. It has been found that the corrosion resistance effect of dual phase steel is smaller than that of raw material in corrosion fatigue crack propagation rate. As pH below 6 is changed, it can be clearly observed from raw material that the brittle intergranular fracture is characterized, and from the above result, the influence of corrosion of dual phase steel is small.
Aluminium titanate is highly anisotropic in thermal expansion. As a result, thermal stresses build up in the material and intergranular cracks can develop. Both the outstanding thermal shock resistance and the low mechanical strength of aluminium titanate ceramics are a result of intergranular microcracking. The authors have previously identified a possibility of remarkably increasing fracture toughness of aluminium titanate without excessive penalty on strength. The paper shows that sintered density and porosity measurements can be used for optimizing the sintering and microstructure of aluminium titanate for an ideal balance between toughness and strength and, hence, the best thermal shock resistance.

It happened fractures on special bolt which supported main landing gear actuator up-lock rod of aircraft. Cracks were initiated mainly from the center hole and the external thread of the special bolt. To find out failure root causes, metallographic, fractographic analyses as well as test work were carried out. From the fractographic study by SEM work, fracture occurred by a brittle intergranular type failure. The fracture could be occurred primarily by solid-metal-induced embrittlement due to cadmium embrittler penetrated into the flaw existed after machining work for center hole and thread on the bolt during baking treatment processing to eliminate hydrogen. For its successful application, cadmium EP bolts require proper and adequate baking treatment after electroplating, and make no more drilled center hole on the bolt to prevent same failure.
Fracture behavior and martensite substructure of Ni-36.5at.%Al alloy were investigated with the addition of vanadium which is known as scavenging element of grain boundary. The fracture surfaces were examined by scanning electron microscopy and the EDX spectrometer was applied for composition analysis of fracture surfaces. The substructure of martensite was studied by transmission electron microscopy. By addition of vanadium, fracture surfaces show mixed modes of intergranular and transgranular fracture and more Al content is found on the grain boundaries. For Ni-36.5at.%Al alloy, the planar faults observed in the martensite plates are the internal twins. By increasing the vanadium content, the modulated structure with stacking faults and dislocations dominates while the twinned martensite disappears. The stacking fault is determined to be extrinsic due to the substitution of V for Al. It is concluded that the segregation of sulfur on the high-energy state stacking fault area suppresses the intergranular fracture.
SiAlON glasses are silicates or alumino-silicates, containing Mg, Ca, Y or rare earth (RE) ions as modifiers, in which nitrogen atoms substitute for oxygen atoms in the glass network. These glasses are found as intergranular films and at triple point junctions in silicon nitride ceramics and these grain boundary phases affect their fracture behaviour. This paper provides an overview of the preparation of M-SiAlON glasses and outlines the effects of composition on properties. As nitrogen substitutes for oxygen in SiAlON glasses, increases are observed in glass transition temperatures, viscosities, elastic moduli and microhardness. These property changes are compared with known effects of grain boundary glass chemistry in silicon nitride ceramics. Oxide sintering additives provide conditions for liquid phase sintering, reacting with surface silica on the $Si_3N_4$ particles and some of the nitride to form SiAlON liquid phases which on cooling remain as intergranular glasses. Thermal expansion mismatch between the grain boundary glass and the silicon nitride causes residual stresses in the material which can be determined from bulk SiAlON glass properties. The tensile residual stresses in the glass phase increase with increasing Y:Al ratio and this correlates with increasing fracture toughness as a result of easier debonding at the glass/${\beta}-Si_3N_4$ interface.
