Design and management of concrete slabs in concrete-faced rock-fill dams are crucial issues for stability and overall dam safety since cracks in the concrete face induced by stress, shrinkage, and deterioration can cause severe leakage from the reservoir into the dam. Especially, the increase of dam height to a certain level to enhance the storage capacity and to improve hydraulic stability can lead to undesirable deformation behavior and stress distribution in the existing dam body and in the concrete slabs. In such conditions, simulation of a concrete slab with a numerical method should involve the use of an interface element because the behavior of the concrete slab does not follow the behavior of the dam body when the dam body settles due to the increase of dam height. However, the interfacial properties between the dam body and the concrete slab have yet to be clearly defined. In this study, construction sequence of a 125 m high CFRD in South Korea is simulated with commercial FDM software. The proper interfacial properties of the concrete slab are estimated based on a comparison to monitored vertical displacement history obtained from the concrete slab. Possibility of shear strength failure under the critical condition is investigated based on the simplified model. Results present the significance of the interfacial properties of the concrete slab.

Interfacial evaluation of various combinations of both Flax and Hemp fibers/polypropylene were performed by using micromechanical test and nondestructive acoustic emission (AE). It can be because interfacial adhesion between the natural fiber surface and matrix plays an important role in controlling the overall mechanical properties of polymer composite materials by transferring the stress from the matrix to the fiber. It is necessary to characterize the interphase and the level of adhesion to understand the performance of the composites properly. Microfailure mechanism of single Flax fiber bundles were investigated using the combination of single fiber tensile test and nondestructive acoustic emission. Microfailure modes of the different natural fiber/polypropylene systems were observed using optical microscope and determined indirectly by AE and their FFT analysis.

The ball shear test was investigated in terms of the effects of test parameters, i.e., shear height and shear speed, with an experimental and non-linear finite element analysis for evaluating the solder joint integrity of area array packages. Two representative Pb-free solder compositions were examined in this work: Sn-3.5Ag-0.75Cu and In-48Sn. The substrate was a common SMD type with solder bond pad openings of 460 $\mu$m in diameter. The microstructural investigations were carried out using SEM, and the IMCs were identified with EDS. Shear tests were conducted with the two varying test parameters. It could be observed that increasing shear height, at fixed shear speed, has the effect of decreasing shear force for both Sn-3.5Ag-0.75Cu and In-48Sn solder joints, while the shear force increased with increasing shear speed at fixed shear height. Too high shear height could cause some undesirable effects on the test results such as unexpected high standard deviation values or shear tip sliding from the solder ball. The low shear height conditions were favorable for screening the type of brittle interfacial fractures or the degraded layers in the interfaces. The shear speed conditions were discussed with the stress analyses of the solder ball, and we cannot find any conspicuous finding which is related to optimum shear speed from the stress analyses.

RC shear walls are considered one of the main lateral resisting members in buildings. In recent years, FRP has been widely utilized in order to strengthen and retrofit concrete structures. A number of experimental studies used CFRP sheets as an external bracing system for retrofitting of RC shear walls. It has been found that the common mode of failure is the debonding of the CFRP-concrete adhesive material. In this study, behavior of RC shear wall was investigated with three different micro models. The analysis included 2D model using plane stress element, 3D model using shell element and 3D model using solid element. To allow for the debonding mode of failure, the adhesive layer was modeled using cohesive surface-to-surface interaction model at 3D analysis model and node-to-node interaction method using Cartesian elastic-plastic connector element at 2D analysis model. The FE model results are validated comparing the experimental results in the literature. It is shown that the proposed FE model can predict the modes of failure due to debonding of CFRP and behavior of CFRP strengthened RC shear wall reasonably well. Additionally, using 2D plane stress model, many parameters on the behavior of the cohesive surfaces are investigated such as fracture energy, interfacial shear stress, partial bonding, proposed CFRP anchor location and using different bracing of CFRP strips. Using two anchors near end of each diagonal CFRP strips delay the end debonding and increase the ductility for RC shear walls.

This Paper presents dynamic analysis of underground R/C Subway Structure, subjected to seismic actions. Earthquakes brought serious damage to RC subway Structure. Foe studying the collapse mechanism of underground RC Subway, seismic of a subway station is simulated in using FEM program ASP2000 of two-dimension based on the path dependent RC elastic model, soil foundation and interfacial models. The shear failure of intermediate vertical columns is founds to be the major cause of the structural collapse. According to FEM simulation of the failure mechanism, it is considered that the RC column would lose axial load carrying capacity after the occurrence of the localized diagonal shear cracks , and sudden failure of the outer frame would be followed. Specially, the shear stress in the middle slab reaches maximum shear capacity. So, the Structure would fail in the middle slab as a result of erasing the vertical ground motion computation.
In this work, the anodic oxidation of carbon fibers was carried out to enhance the mechanical interfacial properties of carbon fibers-reinforced epoxy matrix composites. The surface characteristics of the carbon fibers were studied by FTIR, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Also, the mechanical interfacial properties of the composites were studied with interlaminar shear strength (ILSS), critical stress intensity factor ($K_{IC}$), and critical strain energy release rate ($G_{IC}$). The anodic oxidation led to a significant change in the surface characteristics of the carbon fibers. The anodic oxidation of carbon fiber improved the mechanical interfacial properties, such as ILSS, $K_{IC}$, and $G_{IC}$ of the composites. The mechanical interfacial properties of the composites anodized at 20% sulfuric/nitric (3/1) were the highest values among the anodized carbon fibers. These results were attributed to the increase of the degree of adhesion at interfaces between the carbon fibers and the matrix resins in the composite systems.
Numerical Aanlysis is made on the thermal performance of micro heat pipe in a axial flat grooved channel. The flow of liquid and vapor is investigated in trapezoidal grooves and the effect of variable shear stress along the interface of the liquid and vapor considered. The results from this study are obtained in the axial variation of pressure difference between vapor and liquid, contact angle, velocity of liquid and vapor and so forth. In addition, maximum heat transport capacity of micro-heat pipe is provided by varying the operation temperature, and compared with that from Schneider and Devos's model in which the interfacial shear stress is neglected.
This paper reports the experimental and analytical investigations for evaluating the flexural strength of a RC slab strengthened with carbon fiber sheet (CFS). The evaluation of the ultimate flexural strength of a slab is tried under the assumption that the failure occurs when the shear stress mobilized at the interface between the concrete bottom and the glued CFS reaches its bond strength. The shear stress is evaluated theoretically and the bond strength is obtained by a laboratory test. The ultimate flexural strength is obtained by flexural static test of the slab specimen, which corresponds to the part of a real slab. From the results, the new approach based on the bond strength between concrete and CFS looks feasible to evaluate the flexural strength of the CFS and RC composite slab.
In lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), the stress induced by the volume change of an electrode during charge-discharge processes may often cause the mechanical integrity of the electrode to degrade. Polymer binders with enhanced mechanical properties are preferred for improved mechanical integrity and cycling stability of the electrode. In addition, given that sliding and shearing between the polymer binder and components in the electrode may readily occur, frictional and adhesion characteristics of the polymer binder may play a critical role in the mechanical integrity of the electrode. In this study, frictional and adhesion characteristics of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) were investigated using a colloidal probe atomic force microscope. Friction loops were obtained under various normal forces ranging from 0 to 159 nN in air and electrolyte and then the interfacial shear strengths of PAN and PVDF in air were calculated to be $1.4{\pm}0.5$ and $1.3{\pm}0.3MPa$, respectively. The results show that in electrolyte, interfacial shear strength of PAN decreased slightly ($1.2{\pm}0.2MPa$), whereas that of PVDF decreased drastically ($0.06{\pm}0.01MPa$). Decreases in mechanical properties and adhesion in electrolyte may be responsible for the decrease in interfacial shear strength in electrolyte. The findings from this study may be helpful in developing polymer binders to improve the mechanical integrity of electrodes in LIBs.

Interfacial evaluation, damage sensing and cure monitoring of single carbon fiber/thermosetting composite with different curing processes was investigated using electro-micromechanical test. After curing, residual stress was monitored by measurement of electrical resistance (ER) and then it was compared to correlate with various curing processes. In thermal curing, curing shrinkage appeared significantly by matrix shrinkage and residual stress due to the difference in thermal expansion coefficient (TEC). The change in electrical resistance (ΔR) on thermal curing was higher than that on ultraviolet (UV) curing. For thermal curing, apparent modulus was the highest and reaching time until same strain was faster. So far thermal curing shows strong durability on the IFSS after boiling test.
