In this study, the effects of additives such as ionic surfactant and cosurfactant were studied on the solubilization of sulfur compounds contained in the crude oil by Tergitol series nonionic surfactants. It was found that the addition of an ionic surfactant such as sodium oleate, potassium oleate, CTAB and DTAB did not enhance solubilization capacity of Tergitol series nonionic surfactant. On the other hand, the addition of a long-chain alcohol as a cosurfactant increased the solubilization of sulfur compounds in the crude oil. The effect of alcohol was found to become reduced with an increase in the amount of crude oil used mainly due to partitioning phenomena of an nonionic surfactant. The enhancement of solubilizing capacity of Tergitol series nonionic surfactant with addition of a cosurfactant was associated with a decrease in interfacial tension between crude oil and surfactant solution. The pH of Tergitol nonionic surfactant solution did not affect the solubilization of sulfur compounds. Finally, it was found that the growth of sulfur reducing microoganisms was not greatly affected by both addition of nonionic surfactant and cosurfactant.
Water-lipid soluble multivitamin formulations were widely used to reduce the disease and stress of animals as husbandry has made a remarkable progress in recent. But the efficiency of these formulations is far from satisfactory. So, this study was attempted to develop the physically and chemically stable and useful multivitamin o/w emulsion. Multivitamin o/w emulsion composed of water, soybean oil (10%, v/v), vitamin A, D, E, K, $B_2,\;B_6,\;B_{12}$ and panthenol. To make a stable o/w emulsion, the egg lecithin (2%, w/v) and glycerin (2.5%, w/v) were used for emulsifier and thickening agent, respectively. The oil in water emulsion system was manufactured by microfluidizer and the physicochemical stability of this emulsion was evaluated. The average particle size and interfacial tension were measured. From the result of interfacial tension tested, critical micelle concentration of the egg lecithin was 0.5% (w/v) and optimal concentration for the preparation of emulsion was 2% (w/v). The mean particle size was about $0.6\;{\mu}m$ which was suitable for injections. Short-term accelerated stability as physical stability study was tested by centrifuging and freeze-thawing the emulsion samples. The additions of vitamins resulted in the increment of particle size and reduction of physical stability of emulsion. But it is not an enormous problem for the stability of emulsion. Also, we have performed the long-period preservation stability test for the vitamins. All vitamins were analysed by HPLC. The result of storage under $4^{\circ}C$ and dark conditions demonstrated that all vitamins were maintained stable at least 16 weeks, except for vitamin $B_{12}$.
In this study, the effect of the addition of fluorinated surfactant FS-606 on the solubilization of n-hexane by hydrocarbon surfactant CDP-W was investigated. Oil drop contacting experiments revealed that solubilization rate is independent of initial oil drop size and proportional to the initial surfactant concentration, suggesting that solubilization of n-hexane oil by the surfactant mixture of FS-606 and CDP-W is controlled by an interface-controlled mechanism. In addition, the solubilization rate has been shown to increase with an increase in FS-606 composition, reach a maximum, and then decrease with a further increase in FS-606 composition. On the other hand, the interfacial tension between micellar solution and n-hexane oil has been found to decrease with an increase in FS-606 composition, reach a minimum, and then increase with a further increase in FS-606 composition.

Latex modified concrete (LMC) is a successful polymer-portland cement concretes, which have been developed and used for many years, in overlaying bridge decks and resurfacing industrial floors. The excellent bond strength to substrate, easy application and high resistance to impact, abrasion, wear, aggressive chemicals and freeze-thaw deterioration have made this material used widely. The objective of this study was to determine experimentally the load-deflection response and ultimate strength of reinforced RC beams. The cracking patterns and the mode of failure were observed. Because of excellent bond strength and repairing effects, the RC beams repaired by LMC at compression or tension zone showed over 100% recovery from damaged structures. The RC beams overlaid by LMC showed significant improvement at load carrying capacity as overlay thickness increases. However, the beams repaired of tension zone without shear stirrups almost showed no strengthen effect, and indicated an interfacial failures. The interfacial behavior was estimated by numerical method adopting the concept of shear flow.

This study has been performed to investigate the adhesive slag at GTAW weld zone after FCAW multi-pass welding. The cause of adhesive slag formation was examined using optical microscope, field emission scanning electron microscope(FE-SEM) and XRD analysis. The results obtained in this experiment are summarized as follows. Slag of GTAW weld zone surface during welding were formed by mixing the presence of slag in FCAW weld zone. While the slag cools, Cr-spinel phase were formed due to reactions in slag/metal interface. Also, a Cr moves form the weld metal to the slag to strong affinity between oxide atoms and Cr atoms. Hence, detachability of slag was exacerbated by decreasing the interfacial tensions between slag and weld metal.

An analytical solution for a vertically stratified viscous flow in a microchannel with a rectangular cross-section is constructed, assuming fully developed laminar flow where the interfaces between the fluid layers are flat. Although the solution is for n-layer flow, restricted results to symmetrical three-layer flow are presented to investigate the effects of the viscosity and thickness ratios of the fluid layers and the aspect ratio of the microchannel on the flow field. Relations between the flow rate and thickness ratios of the fluid layers with varying viscosity distributions are found, considering the cross -sectional velocity profiles which vary noticeably with the three parameters and differ significantly from the velocity profiles of the flow between infinite parallel plates. Interfacial instability induced by the viscosity stratification in the microchannel is discussed referring to previous studies on the instability analysis for plane multilayer flow. Exact solution derived in the present study can be used for examining a diffusion process and three -dimensional stability analysis. More works are needed to formulate the equations including the effects of interfacial' tension between immiscible liquids and surface wettability which are important in microscale transport phenomena.
The key process used in nuclear industries for the management of radiotoxicity associated with spent fuel in a closed fuel cycle is solvent extraction. An understanding of hydrodynamics and mass transfer is of primary importance for the design of mass transfer equipment used in solvent extraction processes. Understanding the interfacial phenomenon and the associated hydrodynamics of the liquid drops is essential for model-based design of mass transfer devices. In this work, the phenomenon of drop formation at the tip of a nozzle submerged in quiescent immiscible liquid phase is revisited. Previously reported force balance based models and empirical correlations are analyzed. Experiments are carried out to capture the process of drop formation using high-speed imaging technique. The images are digitally processed to measure the average drop diameter. A correlation based on the force balance model is proposed to estimate drop diameter and jet length. The average drop diameter obtained from the proposed model is in good agreement with experimental data with an average error of 6.3%. The developed model is applicable in both the necking as well as jetting regime and is validated for liquid-liquid systems having low, moderate and high interfacial tension.
To make a stable o/w emulsion, the effects of egg lecithin as an emulsifier and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as an auxiliary emulsifier on the physical stability of emulsion were investigated. The oil-in-water emulsion system was manufactured by microfluidizer and evaluated the physical stability. Average particle size and size distribution of emulsion was measured by dynamic light scattering analyzer and interfacial tension was measured. From the interfacial tension tested, critical micelle concentration of the egg lecithin was 0.1 %w/v and optimal concentration for the preparation of emulsion was 1.0 %w/v. The mean particle size was about $0.2\;{\mu}m$ which was suitable for injections. The short-term accelerated stability studies were conducted by centrifugation, freeze-thaw method and shaking of the emulsion samples. The addition of PVP was caused the reduction in the particle size and improved the physical stability of emulsion. These results suggested that a mixed interfacial film comprising the egg lecithin and PVP was formed at the o/w interface and it was effective in preventing phase separation under thermic or mechanical stress. We used antineoplaston A10 (A10) as a model drug which is peptide and amino acid derivative having a action to the living organism against the development of neoplastic growth by a nonimmunological progress. It has a poor solubility in water and there may be a difficulty in formulation of A10. Emulsion formulation study about A10 was performed. Solubility of A10 in emulsion was about five times as high as that in water. From the results of solubility and partition coefficient, almost A10 molecules in o/w emulsion exist in the interface between oil and water.

Competitive displacement of methylcellulose (MC) absorbed at the oil-water interface was investigated by interfacial composition, surface shear viscosity, or surface tension measurements. It was found that all emulsifiers could competitively displace the interfacial MC from the oil-water interface but their behaviors were different from each other. With Tween 20 added to MC emulsion (1 wt% MC, 10 wt% n-tetradecane, 20 mM bis-tris, pH 7), MC load was steadily decreased with increasing concentrations of the emulsifier, as confirmed by surface shear viscosity measurements; moreover, there was complete MC displacement from the emulsion droplet surface at high concentration (0.1 wt%). The oil-soluble Span 80 was found to show a synergism with MC at the interface, which resulted in higher MC load at relatively low emulsifier concentrations ($\leq$0.05 wt%). At a higher emulsifier concentration (0.1 wt%) limited MC displacement was observed. These results were well supported by surface shear viscosity measurements. With water-soluble SDS, MC load was decreased with increasing concentrations of the emulsifier. Unlike Tween 20, however, it was found that at high concentrations (> 0.1 wt%), there was still some MC remaining at the droplet surface. Surface tension measurements are suggestive of an interfacial complex between MC and SDS.
Phase equilibrium and dynamic behavior studies were performed in systems containing $C_{12}E_5$ nonionic surfactant solution and nonpolar hydrocarbon oil. The phase behavior result showed an oil-in-water(O/W) microemulsion(${\mu}E$) in equilibrium with excess oil phase at low temperatures and a water-in-oil(W/O) ${\mu}E$ in equilibrium with excess water phase at high temperatures. For intermediate temperatures a 3 phase region containing excess water, excess oil, and a middle-phase microemulsion was observed and the transition temperature was found to increase with an increase in the chain length of a hydrocarbon oil. Dynamic behavior at low temperatures showed that an oil drop size decreased linearly with time due to solubilization into micelles and the solubilization rate decreased with an increase in the chain length of a hydrocarbon oil. On the other hand, both spontaneous emulsification of water into oil phase and expansion of oil drop with time were observed because of diffusion of surfactant and water into oil phase. Under conditions of a 3 phase region including a middle-phase ${\mu}E$, both rapid solubilization and emulsification of oil into aqueous surfactant solution were found mainly due to the existence of ultra-low interfacial tension. Interfacial tensions were measured as a function of time for n-decane oil drops brought into contact with 1 wt% surfactant solution at $25^{\circ}C$. Both equilibrium interfacial tension and equilibration time were found to increase with an increase in the chain length of a hydrocarbon oil.
