Improving the linear flexibility distribution model to simultaneously account for gravity and lateral loads

  • There are two methods to model the plastification of members comprising lumped and distributed plasticity. When a reinforced concrete member experiences inelastic deformations, cracks tend to spread from the joint interface resulting in a curvature distribution; therefore, the lumped plasticity methods assuming plasticity is concentrated at a zero-length plastic hinge section at the ends of the elements, cannot model the actual behavior of reinforced concrete members. Some spread plasticity models including uniform, linear and recently power have been developed to take extended inelastic zone into account. In the aforementioned models, the extended inelastic zones in proximity of critical sections assumed close to connections are considered. Although the mentioned assumption is proper for the buildings simply imposed lateral loads, it is not appropriate for the gravity load effects. The gravity load effects can influence the inelastic zones in structural elements; therefore, the plasticity models presenting the flexibility distribution along the member merely based on lateral loads apart from the gravity load effects can bring about incorrect stiffness matrix for structure. In this study, the linear flexibility distribution model is improved to account for the distributed plasticity of members subjected to both gravity and lateral load effects. To do so, a new model in which, each member is taken as one structural element into account is proposed. Some numerical examples from previous studies are assessed and outcomes confirm the accuracy of proposed model. Also comparing the results of the proposed model with other spread plasticity models illustrates glaring error produced due to neglecting the gravity load effects.

A Study on the Carburization of iron (철의 침탄기구에 대한 연구)

  • The experiment was carried out for the purpose of studying the carburization of pure iron ingot and sintered iron powder by solid carbon in the atmosphere of $N_2$ gas. The velocity of carburization was estimated by the diffusion coefficient D calculated by carburization equation. The results obtained were as follows ; 1. The briqueted sample of iron fine powder which made by higher pressure, carburization depth and carbon concentration were increased as much, and pure iron shelved the maximum value. 2, The higher the carburization temperature, carburization depth and carbon concentration were increased, and the melting zone which had 3.0~3.3%C at the interface of carburization was formed at 130$0^{\circ}C$. As the pure iron ingot was carburized, the diffusion coefficient D of carbon were 0.211$\times$$10^{-6}$$\textrm{cm}^2$ㆍsec$^{-1}$ at 120$0^{\circ}C$ and 0.391$\times$$10^{-6}$$\textrm{cm}^2$ㆍsec$^{-1}$ at 130$0^{\circ}C$, respectively. 4. As the sintered iron powder was carburized at the pressure of 4 ton/$\textrm{cm}^2$, the diffusion coefficient of carbon were 0.157$\times$$10^{-6}$$\textrm{cm}^2$ㆍsec$^{-1}$ at 120$0^{\circ}C$ and 0.103$\times$$10^{-5}$$\textrm{cm}^2$ㆍsec$^{-1}$ at 130$0^{\circ}C$, respectively.

Study on Gaseous Nitrocarburizing Treatment (가스침질탄화법(浸窒炭化法)에 관한 연구(硏究))

  • This study has been carried out to evaluate gaseous nitrocarburizing treatment undertaken for pure iron at $570^{\circ}C$ in an atmosphere containing 50% endothermic gas, generated from natural gas, and 50% ammonia. The results obtained from the experiment are as follows ; 1) The microstructure of gaseous nitrocarburized pure iron consists of the compound layer on the surface and the diffusion zone beneath it. The compound layer progresses uniformly into ferrite with a thickness of $20{\mu}$ obtained after treating for 3 hours. 2) Chemical analysis has shown that the compound layer has a C/N ratio of 0.19 and that the average combined interstitial content of the compound layer is about 30 atomic percent, which is close to the lower limit of the ${\varepsilon}$-carbonitride phase field in Fe-C-N phase diagram. 3) X-ray diffraction analysis has revealed that the compound layer consists mainly of the c.p.h. phase, ${\varepsilon}-Fe_3$(C.N) and a small amount of $Fe_4N$ and traces of ferrite are also present in the compound layer. 4) The microhardness of the compound layer is about 600 V.H.N and shows a relatively sharp fall-off at the compound layer/diffusion zome interface. 5) The average actual degree of ammonia dissociation is calculated to be 27% for a gaseous nitrocarburizing treatment carried out at $570^{\circ}C$.

  • The hydrodynamic impact problem was studied from 1929 to recent. Especially, Impact pressure is important for the design of the ships and offshore structure and spacecrafts, and under weapons. A ship traveling at high speed or in heavy sea has its bow and bottom damaged by high pressure caused by impact with and detachment from the water surface. Considerable impact may also occur when large waves hit the cross member or deck plate of an offshore structure within the splash zone. Many engineering cases require consideration of impact pressure, the movement of objects and change of the flow field. This study was obtained the pressure distribution of a falling body that is deadrise angle $0^{\circ}$ and deadrise angle $5^{\circ}$ upon a water surface by the experiment with the impact machine. The theoretical equation was obtained the air region and the interface and the water region which devide 3 parties between the body and the water surface for an investigation of the complete phenomena. Pressure distributions and histories compare favorably with available experimental data. The numerical results are similar to the experimental results for the impact force type with Fo(1+$cos{\pi}t/tc$).

Mechanical Properties of Friction Joint of AZ31Mg Alloy (AZ31마그네슘합금의 마찰접합특성)

  • Magnesium alloy has been known as lightweight material in automobile and electronic industry with aluminum alloy, titanium alloy and plastic material. Friction welding is useful to join various metals and nonferrous metals that are difficult to join by such as gas welding, resistance welding and electronic beam welding. In this study, friction joining was performed to investigate mechanical properties of Mg alloy with 20mm diameter solid bar. Also the optimal joining conditions for its application were determined on the basis of tensile test, and hardness survey. The joining parameters were chosen as heating pressure, heating time, upsetting pressure, and upsetting time. Heating and upsetting pressure were executed under the range of 10~40MPa and 20~80MPa, respectively. From the experimental results, optimal joining conditions were determined as follows; rotating speed=2000rpm, heating pressure=35MPa, upsetting pressure=70MPa, heating time=1sec, upsetting time=5sec. Also the hardness of jointed boundary showed as HV50 which was similar to that of base metal at the optimal condition, and it was supposed that zone of HAZ was 8mm. Finally two materials were strongly mixed at interface part to show a well-combined microstructure without particle growth or any defect.

Thermohaline Structure of the Shelf Front in the Korea Strait in Early Winter (초겨울 大韓海峽에서 形成되는 淺海前線의 構造)

  • Mesoscale thermohaline structures of the meandering front in the Korea Strait during November 1976, 1980 and 1982 are studied by means of closely spaced oceanographic observations and the satellite infrared images. Strong thermal and salinity fronts coincide each other and show a wavelike meander motion with wavelengths of 40-60km and amplitudes of, 15-20km. Salinity minimum band of less than 33.0 is found along the onshore edge of the front. Width of the frontal zone corresponds approximately to the internal radius of deformation (R=5-10km) and the slope of density interface is confined to about 2R. A series of satellite infrared images with the interval of 4-5 days show a noticeable growth of frontal meander over the flat shelf west of the Korea Strait. Possible mechanisms of frontal meander and its growth are discussed.

2-DH Quadtree based Modelling of Longshore Current (연안류에 대한 2D-H 사면구조에 기초한 수치모델링)

  • Wave-induced currents drive nearshore transport processes, and hence an accurate understanding of wave-current interaction is required for proper management of coastal zone. This paper presents details of an adaptive quadtree grid based numerical model of the coupled wave climate and depth-averaged current field. The model accounts for wave breaking, shoaling, refraction, diffraction, wave-current interaction, set-up and set-down, mixing processes, bottom friction effects, and movement of land-water interface at the shoreline. The wave period- and depth-averaged governing equations arc discrctized explicitly by means of an Adarns¬Bashforth second-order finite difference technique on adaptive hierarchical staggered quadtree grids. Results from the numerical model are in reasonable agreement with the laboratory data of longshore current generated by oblique waves on a plane beach (Visser 1980, 1991).

  • The purpose of this study is to describe 3-Dimensional technique to obtain spatial information automatically using PhotoModeler Pro. PhotoModeler Pro is excellent software with the three-dimensional measurement function used by a personal computer using Windows operating system However, it is not sufficient to carry out the automatic matching work with two stereo images. This is very large neck as a 3-D measurement software. In this study, the automatic stereo matching work using the self-making program and DDE interface within PhotoModeler Pro was tried. The experiment field is the hillside and stair zone of Tateyama region, Nagasaki City. The results of automatic stereo matching work were very good with $100\%$ hitting ratio of target.

Mesoscale modelling of concrete for static and dynamic response analysis -Part 1: model development and implementation

  • Concrete is a heterogeneous material exhibiting quasi-brittle behaviour. While homogenization of concrete is commonly accepted in general engineering applications, a detailed description of the material heterogeneity using a mesoscale model becomes desirable and even necessary for problems where drastic spatial and time variation of the stress and strain is involved, for example in the analysis of local damages under impact, shock or blast load. A mesoscale model can also assist in an investigation into the underlying mechanisms affecting the bulk material behaviour under various stress conditions. Extending from existing mesoscale model studies, where use is often made of specialized codes with limited capability in the material description and numerical solutions, this paper presents a mesoscale computational model developed under a general-purpose finite element environment. The aim is to facilitate the utilization of sophisticated material descriptions (e.g., pressure and rate dependency) and advanced numerical solvers to suit a broad range of applications, including high impulsive dynamic analysis. The whole procedure encompasses a module for the generation of concrete mesoscale structure; a process for the generation of the FE mesh, considering two alternative schemes for the interface transition zone (ITZ); and the nonlinear analysis of the mesoscale FE model with an explicit time integration approach. The development of the model and various associated computational considerations are discussed in this paper (Part 1). Further numerical studies using the mesoscale model for both quasi-static and dynamic loadings will be presented in the companion paper (Part 2).

  • In this paper, joints of Cu-1Cr-0.1Zr alloy to STS316L were performed by friction welding method. Particularly, Cu-1Cr-0.1Zr alloy is attractive candidate as nuclear power plant material and exibit the best combination of high strength and good electrical and thermal conductivity of any copper alloy examined. The stainless steel is a structural material while copper alloy acts as a heat sink material for the surface heat flux in the first wall. So, in this paper, not only the development of optimizing of friction welding with more reliability and more applicability but also the development of in-process real-time weld quality (such as strength and toughness) evaluation technique by acoustic emission for friction welding of such nuclear reactor component of Cu-1Cr-0.1Zr alloy to STS316L steel sere performed.
