  • The adsorption configurations of S-proline on Ge(100) were studied using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), density functional theory (DFT) calculations, and high-resolution core-level photoemission spectroscopy (HRCLPES). We identified three adsorption structures of S-proline on Ge(100) through analysis of the STM images, DFT calculations, and HRCLPES results: (i) an 'intrarow O - H dissociated and N dative bonded structure', (ii) an 'O - H dissociation structure', and (iii) an 'N dative bonded structure'. Moreover, because adsorption through the N atom of S-proline produces a new chiral center due to symmetry reduction by N dative bonding, the adsorption configurations have either (R,S) or (S,S) chirality, yielding an (R,S)-'intrarow O - H dissociated and N dative bonded structure' and an (R,S)-'N dative bonded structure', with a preference for reaction at the Re face. This work presents a novel method for generating stereoselective attachment using S-proline molecules adsorbed onto a Ge(100) surface.

  • Joints of three-dimensional (3D) rutile-type (r) tin dioxide ($SnO_2$) nanowire networks, produced by the flame transport synthesis (FTS), are formed by coherent twin boundaries at $(101)^r$ serving for the interpenetration of the nanowires. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) methods, i.e. high resolution and (precession) electron diffraction (PED), were utilized to collect information of the atomic interface structure along the edge-on zone axes $[010]^r$, $[111]^r$ and superposition directions $[001]^r$, $[101]^r$. A model of the twin boundary is generated by a supercell approach, serving as base for simulations of all given real and reciprocal space data as for the elaboration of three-dimensional, i.e. relrod and higher order Laue zones (HOLZ), contributions to the intensity distribution of PED patterns. Confirmed by the comparison of simulated and experimental findings, details of the structural distortion at the twin boundary can be demonstrated.

  • In this study, the Disturbed State Concept (DSC) constitutive model is calibrated and modified for steel-sand interface by using the HiS S model for relative intact (Rl) state and the critical state model for the fuBy adjusted (FA) part in the material. The general formulation for implementation is developed. Then, the DSC model with modification for interface is implemented in finite element program based on the generalized Biot's theory. The interface test under one-way monotonic and two-way cyclic loading were numerically simulated using the finite element program modified in this study. The DSC predictions show improved agreement with the observed results from laboratory test. Overall, the computer procedure with the DSC allows relatively improved simulation ofthe soil-structure interaction problems.oblems.

  • Surface properties such as morphology, crystalline structure, and chemical composition of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) blend coatings prepared by dispersion coating on poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) film have been investigated. It was observed that the surface properties were greatly influenced by the coating temperature and blend composition according to SEM, ATR-FTIR and XPS analysis. The typical surface morphology of ${\alpha}$-crystalline structure of PVDF could be observed when the coating temperature was lower than $120^{\circ}C$ or the amount of PVDF was higher than 80 wt% in the blend. Otherwise, the crystalline structure was changed from ${\alpha}$-crystal to ${\gamma}$-crystal or amorphous state. Based on the XPS analysis, the surface segregation of PVDF chains in the blend coating was confirmed.

  • A number of thin-film deposition technologies have been developed. However, even a thin film whose properties are excellent may not be used as long as the adhesion strength between the thin film and the substrate is poor. For thin films, the adhesion strength is as important as the properties. In the present article, relation between interface structure and thin film adhesion, and factors affecting thin film adhesion are reviewed. Two kinds of factors, internal factors and external factors, affect thin film adhesion. Such factors as composition, structure, and reactivity of both thin film and substrate as well as surface roughness of the substrate and residual stress of the thin film belong to internal factors. And such factors as load, temperature, humidity, and corrosive environment belong to external factors. It is also reviewed that how we can control the internal factors and the external factors to enhance or keep the adhesion strength.

  • This study proposes a text interface for support of language-based educational contents in a mobile platform environment. The proposed interface utilizes deep learning as an input structure to write words through handwriting. Based on GUI (Graphical User Interface) using buttons and menus of mobile platform contents and input methods such as screen touch, click, and drag, we design a text interface that can directly input and process handwriting from the user. It uses the EMNIST (Extended Modified National Institute of Standards and Technology database) dataset and a trained CNN (Convolutional Neural Network) to classify and combine alphabetic texts to complete words. Finally, we conduct experiments to analyze the learning support effect of the interface proposed by directly producing English word education contents and to compare satisfaction. We compared the ability to learn English words presented by users who have experienced the existing keypad-type interface and the proposed handwriting-based text interface in the same educational environment, and we analyzed the overall satisfaction in the process of writing words by manipulating the interface.

  • This paper investigates the nature of Japanese argument cluster (Steedman 2000b). Based on Combinatory Categorial Grammar, a type-raising analysis of case particles which captures some aspects of the information structure in Japanese is discussed, including contrastive interpretation of coordination, wh-constructions, and some theme and rheme-related grammatical phenomena. These observations offer further support for the study of syntax, semantics, and phonology interface and the earlier analysis of English information structure.

  • Ultrasonic testing are far superior to other nondestructive tests for detecting the disbond interface which occurred in adhesive interface. However, a solid rocket motor consisting of a steel case, rubber insulation, liner, and propellant poses many difficulties for analyzing ultrasonic waves because of the superposition of reflected waves and large differences in acoustic impedance of various materials. Therefore, ultrasonic tests for detecting the disbond interface in solid rocket motor have been applied in very limited areas between the steel case and rubber insulation using an automatic C-scan system. The existing ultrasonic test cannot detect the disbond interface between the liner and propellant of a solid rocket motor because most of the ultrasonic waves are absorbed in the rubber material which has low acoustic impedance. This problem could be overcome by analyzing the resonance frequency from the frequency spectrum using the ultrasonic resonance method. In this paper, a new technique to detect the disbond interface between the liner and propellant using ultrasonic resonance characteristics is discussed in detail.

  • Understanding charge transport anisotropy at the interface of conjugated nanostructures basically gives insight into structure-property relationship in organic field-effect transistors (OFET). Here, the anisotropy of the field-effect mobility at the interface between 6,13-bis(triisopropylsilylethynyl) pentacene (TIPS-pentacene) single crystal with cofacial molecular stacks in a-b basal plane and SiO gate dielectric was investigated. A solvent exchange method has been used in order for TIPS-pentacene single crystals to be grown on the surface of SiO2 thin film, corresponding to the charge accumulation at the interface in OFET structure. In TIPS-pentacene OFET, the anisotropy ratio between the highest and lowest measured mobility is revealed to be 5.2. By analyzing the interaction of a conjugated unit in TIPS-pentacene with the nearest neighbor units, the mobility anisotropy can be rationalized by differences in HOMO-level coupling and hopping routes of charge carriers. The theoretical estimation of anisotropy based on HOMO-level coupling is also consistent with the experimental result.
