An interfacial instability has recently been observed for the DC- and AC-powered electroosmotic flows of the two miscible electrolyte layers having different concentrations in microchannels. It is rather contrary to our common belief that the flow inside a microchannel is generally stable due to the dominant role of the viscous damping. In this work, we visualized the electroosmotic flow inside a T-channel to validate the numerical predictions. It is clearly shown that the strong vortices (which characterize the interface shapes) are generated at the interface of the two fluids, as was predicted in the numerical analysis.

The rivulet is a narrow stream of liquid flowing down a solid surface. When the rivulet\`s flow rate exceeds a certain limit, it tends to meander exhibiting the instability of its interface. This analysis performs a perturbation analysis of this meandering rivulet assuming an inviscid flow possessing contact angle hysteresis at the contact line. The analysis reveals that the contact angle hysteresis as well as the velocity difference across the inter-face, strongly induces the instability of the liquid interface. Moreover, when the rivulet veto-city is low, it is predicted that the axisymmetric disturbance amplifies more rapidly than the anti-axisymmetric disturbance, which explains the emergence of the droplet flow at the low velocity regime.
The neutral component of the interstellar medium (ISM) is segregated into the cold neutral medium (CNM) and warm neutral medium (WNM) as a result of thermal instability. It was found that the CNM--WNM evaporation interface, across which the CNM undergoes thermal expansion, is linearly unstable to corrugational disturbances, in complete analogy with the Darrieus-Landau instability (DLI) in terrestrial flames. To explore dynamical consequences of the DLI in the ISM, we perform a linear stability analysis of the DLI including the effect of thermal conduction as well as nonlinear hydrodynamic simulations. We find that the DLI is suppressed at short length scales via heat transport. The linear growth time of the fastest growing mode is proportional to the square of the evaporation flow speed of the CNM relative to the interface and is typically >10 Myr. In the nonlinear stage, perturbations grow into cusp-like structure protruding toward the WNM, and soon reach a steady state where the evaporation rate is increased by a factor of 2 compared to the initial state. We demonstrate that the amplitude of the interface distortion and enhancement in evaporation rate are determined primarily by the density ratio between the CNM and WNM. Given quite a long growth time and highly subsonic velocities at saturation, the DLI is unlikely to play an important role in the ISM dynamics.
Electro-osmotic flow (EOF) instability in a microchannel has been experimentally investigated using a micro-PIV system. The micro-PIV system consisting of a two-head Nd:Yag laser and cooled CCD camera was used to measure instantaneous velocity fields and vorticity contours of the EOF instability in a T-shape glass microchannel. The electrokinetic flow instability occurs in the presence of electric conductivity gradients. Charge accumulation at the interface of conductivity gradients leads to electric body forces, driving the coupled flow and electric field into an unstable dynamics. The threshold electric field above which the flow becomes unstable and rapid mixing occurs is about 1000V/cm. As the electric field increases, the flow pattern becomes unstable and vortical motion is enhanced. This kind of instability is a key factor limiting the robust performance of complex electrokinetic bio-analytical devices, but can also be used for rapid mixing and effective flow control fer micro-scale bio-chips.
An ionization front (IF) surrounding an H II region is a sharp interface through which a cold neutral gas makes transition to a warm ionized phase by absorbing UV photons from central massive stars. We investigate the structure and instability of a plane-parallel D-type IF threaded by magnetic fields parallel to the front. We find that magnetic fields increase the maximum propagation speed of the IFs, while reducing the expansion factor, defined as the density ratio of neutral to ionized phases. IFs become unstable to distortional perturbations due to gas expansion across the fronts, exactly analogous to the Darrieus-Landau instability of ablation fronts in terrestrial flames. The growth rate of the IF instability is proportional linearly to the perturbation wavenumber as well as the upstream flow speed. The IF instability is stabilized by gas compressibility and becomes completely quenched when the front is D-critical. The instability is also stabilized by magnetic pressure when the perturbations propagate in the direction perpendicular to the fields. When the perturbations propagate in the direction parallel to the fields, on the other hand, it is magnetic tension that reduces the growth rate, completely suppressing the instability when ${\beta}$ < 1.5, with ${\beta}$ denoting the square of the ratio of the sound speed to the Alfven speed in the pre-IF region. When the front experiences an acceleration, the IF instability cooperates with the Rayleigh-Taylor instability to make the front more unstable. We discuss potential effects of IF instability on the evolution and dynamics of IFs in the interstellar medium.
The effect of VC addition on the microstructural evolution of Fe-TiC cermet has been investigated. The microstructures of the Fe-TiC varied with the amount of VC addition. The addition of 1wt% VC enhanced the instability of liquid-solid interface ; the dissolving interface showed round shape instead of facetted one which was ascribed to the increase of lattice mismatch between TiC and solid-solution carbide. in the speci-men with 10wt% VC the new set of solid-solution carbide grains of uniform and small size was formed in-side coarse TiC particles by diffusion induced recrystallizatin (DIR). With increasing the heat-treatment time fine recrystallized grains were dispersed homogeneously in the matrix and resulted in the increase in fracture strength.

A code is developed to simulate incompressible free surface flows using the Roe's flux-difference splitting scheme. An interface of two fluids is considered as a moving contact discontinuity. The continuities of pressure and normal velocity across the interface are enforced by the conservation law in the integral sense. The fluxes are computed using the Roe's flux-difference splitting scheme for two incompressible fluids. The interface can be identified based on the computed density distribution. However, no additional treatment is required along the interface during the whole computations. Complicated time evolution of the interface including topological change can be captured without any difficulties. The developed code is applied to simulate the Rayleigh-Taylor instability of two incompressible fluids in the density ratio of 7.2:1 and the broken dam problem of water-air. The present results are compared with other available results and good agreements are achieved for the both cases.
We present a high-order potential ow model for the motion of the impulsively accelerated unstable interface of infinite density jump. The Layzer model for the evolution of the interface is extended to high-order. The time-evolution solutions of the bubble and the spike in the interface are obtained from the high-order model. We show that the high-order model gives improvement on the prediction of the evolution of the bubble and the spike.
Hybrid robust image processing algorithm to extract visual features of melon during the cultivation was developed based on a wireless tele-operative interface. Features of a melon such as size and shape including position were crucial to successful task automation and future development of cultivation data base. An algorithm was developed based on the concept of hybrid decision-making which shares a task between the computer and the operator utilizing man-computer interactive interface. A hybrid decision-making system was composed of three modules such as wireless image transmission, task specification and identification, and man-computer interface modules. Computing burden and the instability of the image processing results caused by the variation of illumination and the complexity of the environment caused by the irregular stem and shapes of leaves and shades were overcome using the proposed algorithm. With utilizing operator's teaching via LCD touch screen of the display monitor, the complexity and instability of the melon identification process has been avoided. Hough transform was modified for the image obtained from the locally specified window to extract the geometric shape and position of the melon. It took less than 200 milliseconds processing time.

Positive bias temperature instability (PBTI) degradation of n+ and p+ poly-Si gate high-voltage(HV) SiO2 dielectric nMOSFETs was investigated. Unlike the expectation that degradation of n+/nMOSFET will be greater than p+/nMOSFET owing to the oxide electric field caused by the gate material difference, the magnitude of the PBTI degradation was greater for the p+/nMOSFET than for the n+/nMOSFET. To analyze the cause, the interface state and oxide charge were extracted for each case, respectively. Also, the carrier injection and trapping mechanism were analyzed using the carrier separation method. As a result, it has been verified that hole injection and trapping by the p+ poly-Si gate accelerates the degradation of p+/nMOSFET. The carrier injection and trapping processes of the n+ and p+ poly-Si gate high-voltage nMOSFETs in PBTI are detailed in this paper.
