  • A 2-D four-noded finite element which contains a ${\lambda}$ singularity is developed. The new element is compatible with quadratic standard isoparametric elements. The element is tested on two different examples. In the first example, an edge crack problem is analyzed using two different meshes and different integration orders. The second example is a crack perpendicular to the interface problem which is solved for different material properties and in turn different singularity order ${\lambda}$. The results of those examples illustrate the efficiency of the proposed element.

  • The focus of the present work is on the computation of the stress intensity factor for the crack at the elastic-viscoelastic bimaterial interface. First, the stress intensity factor for an interface crack in dissimilar elastic and viscoelastic materials is dervied by applying the correspondence principle to associated elastic expression. Then the time-domain boundary element analysis is performed to calculate the stress intensity factor. Numerical results show that the proposed method is very useful for the analysis of the interface crack in elastic and viscoelastic materials.

  • The stress intensity factors for edge cracks located at the bonding interface between the semiconductor chip and the adhesive layer subjected to a uniform transverse tensile strain are investigated. Such cracks might be generated due to a stress singularity in the vicinity of the free surface. The boundary element method (BEM) is employed to investigate the behavior of interface stresses. The amplitude of complex stress intensity factor depends on the crack length, but it has a constant value at large crack lengths. The rapid propagation of interface crack is expected if the transverse tensile strain reaches a critical value.

  • In the authors' preceeding paper, an improved component mode synthesis (CMS) technique in which experimental data as well as finite-element data are available in sub-systems has been proposed. Thi s technique, called an improved experimental free-interface method (IEFIM), has been proved to be more accurate and more efficient than the conventional experimental CMS method based on McNeal's formulation. It is due to the facts that dynamic residual terms as well as static ones are compensated from experimentally obtained FRFs and that FRFs measured on any frequencies can be used for the compensation. In this paper, the technique is applied to the component mode synthesis of a car body structure. As a result, the applicability of the technique to a large structure is demonstrated.

  • A finite element nonlinear stress-deformation model with multi-interface element is applied to the stability analysis of waste landfill slope. Strength parameters of waste and geosynthetic materials are obtained from the triaxial test of waste and the direct shear test of geosynthetics, respectively. The landfill models used for the numerical models are fit to regulations of the Korean waste management law. The results of the strength tests showed linear behavior for the waste and nonlinear behavior for the eosynthectic materials. The stability analysis with multi-interface element for the geosynthetic materials in the liner system showed large shear stress and slippage at the boundary of the foundation and the slope of the waste fill. This analysis verified the necessity of multi-interface analysis for waste landfills with composite liners.

  • This paper concerns the stress singularity at the interface corner of the viscoelastic adhesive layer bonded between rigid adherends, subjected to a uniform transverse tensile strain. The characteristic equation is derived in the Laplace transformed space, following Williams, and the transformed characteristic equation is inverted analytically into real time space for the viscoelastic model considered here. The order of the singularity is obtained numerically. The time-domain boundary element method is employed to investigate the nature of stresses along the interface. Numerical results show that the order of the singularity increases with time while the free-edge stress intensity factors are relaxed with time.

  • A method of strength evaluation applying fracture mechanics in the adhesively bonded joints of Al/Steel dissimilar materials was investigated in this paper. Various shapes of adhesively bonded Al/Steel scarf joints focussing on fracture criterion of mixed mode crack were prepared for the static tests. Also, stress intensity factors of the interface cracks in adhesively bonded joints of Al/Steel dissimilar materials were analyzed with 2-dimensional elastic program of boundary element method(BEM), and the experiment of fracture toughness were carried out under various mixed mode conditions. From the results, the fracture criterion and method of strength evaluation by the fracture toughness in adhesively bonded joints of Al/Steel dissimilar materials were proposed.

  • In a view point of earth environmental protection and social requirement, adhesively bonded structures of aluminum alloys have become to be employed for the purpose of decreasing fuel ratio by weight reduction and to improve performance in various engineering fields such as aircrafts, automobiles, rolling stocks and so on. In spite of such wide applications in adhesively bonded structures of aluminum alloys, the quantitative fracture criterion and evolution method of its bonded strength have not been established yet. The objective of this paper is to establish fracture criterion considering stress singularity at interface edges in adhesively bonded structures of aluminum alloys. Through the analyses of boundary element method and static fracture experiments with three different types of specimens in the adhesively bonded joints of aluminum alloys, its fracture criterion was proposed and discussed about strength evolution of adhesively bonded structures.

  • To analyze the mechanical property and the residual stress in functionally gradient materials(FGMs), disctype TZP/Ni-and TZP/SUS304-FGM were hot pressed using powder metallurgy compared with directly bonded materials which were fabricated by the same method. The continuous interface and the microstructure of FGMs were characterized by EPMA, WDS, optical microscope and SEM. By fractography, the fracture behavior of FGMs was mainly influenced by the defects which originated from the fabrication process. And the defectlike cracks in the FGMs induced by the residual stress have been shown to cause failure. This fact has well corresponded to the analysis of the residual stress distribution by Finite Element Method (FEM). The residual stress generated on the interface (between each layer, and matrix and second phase, respectively) were dominantly influenced on the sintering temperature and the material constants. As a consequence, the interfacial stability and the relaxation of residual stress could be obtained through compositional gradient.
