This paper describes a damage accumulation mechanism in cross-ply CFRP laminates $[0_2/90_2]_{2S}$ subjected to out-of-plane loading. Drop-weight impact and static indentation tests were carried out, and induced damage was observed by ultrasonic C-scan and an optical microscope. Both tests gave essentially the same results for damage modes, sizes, and load-deformation history. First, a crack occurred in the bottom $0^{\circ}$ layer accompanying some delamination along the crack caused by bending stress. Then, transverse cracks occurred in the middle $90^{\circ}$ layer with decreasing contact force between the specimen and the indenter. Measured local strains near the impact point showed that the stress state changed from a bending dominant state to an in-plane tensile dominant state. A cohesive interface element was used to simulate the propagation of multiple delaminations and transverse cracks under static indentation. Two types of analytical models are considered, one with multiple delaminations and the other with both multiple delaminations and transverse cracks. The damage obtained for the model with only multiple delaminations was quite different from that obtained from the experiment. However, the results obtained from the model with both delaminations and transverse cracks well explain the characteristics of the damage obtained in the experiment. The existence of the transverse cracks is essential to form the characteristic impact damage.
Among the various alternatives to make a steel tubular member connection, making a slotted and gusset plate welded connection is one of the most frequently preferred alternatives. This type of connection is essentially an end connection that is made by slotting the tube longitudinally, inserting the gusset plate and then placing longitudinal fillet welds at the tube-to-plate interface. In this paper an experimental study on the behaviour of such connections in stainless steel is presented. 24 specimens were tested under concentrically applied axial tensile forces for varying tube-to-gusset plate weld lengths. Both circular and box section members were considered in the test program. Load-deformation curves were obtained and comparisons were made in terms of strength and ductility. The results obtained from the study were then critically examined and compared with currently available design guidance for slotted gusset plate welded tubular end connections. It is noted that no specific rules exist in international specifications on structural stainless steel which cover the design of such connections. Therefore, the results of this study are compared with the existing design rules for carbon steel.

Friction welding has may merits such as energy efficiency, simple processing, etc. but it is difficult to obtain good welding at the welded interfaces and heat affected zone. It is discovered that stress singularity exists at the interferes and heat affected zone. The computer program based on boundary element method is utilized in this study. A mathematical model is implemented based on results from several experiments performed at and around the welded interfaces and heat affected zone of disimilar metals under static and dynamic loadings. This stay is to investigate the characteristics of the deformation and fracture behavior around interfaces for friction welded materials under static tensile load. Also, the stress distribution at the tip of crack is analyzed by using BU based on Kelvin's solution of 2-dimensional binding zone. The results of BEM are identical with those in case of considering interfaces of both heat affected zone. Also, stress singularity at the tip of interfaces appears when the elastic modulus ratio is 1.07.
In this paper, a numerical study using finite element method with considering soil-structure interaction was conducted to investigate the stress and deformation behavior of a sheet pile wall structure. In numerical model, one of the nonlinear elastic material constitutive models, Duncan-Chang E-v model, is used for describing soil behavior. The hard contact constitutive model is used for simulating the behavior of interface between the sheet pile wall and soil. The construction process of excavation and backfill is simulated by the way of step loading. We also compare the present numerical method with the in-situ test results for verifying the numerical methods. The numerical analysis showed that the soil excavation in the lock chamber has a huge effect on the wall deflection and stress, pile deflection, and anchor force. With the increase of distance between anchored bars, the maximum wall deflection and anchor force increase, while the maximum wall stress decreases. At a low elevation of anchored bar, the maximum wall bending moment decreases, but the maximum wall deflection, pile deflection, and anchor force both increase. The construction procedure with first excavation and then backfill is quite favorable for decreasing pile deflection, wall deflection and stress, and anchor forces.

An investigation was performed to study the matrix cracking and delamination in laminated composite plates due to transverse impact. A model was developed for predicting the initiation of the matrix cracking and the shape and size of impact-induced delamination in laminated composite plates resulting from the ballistic impact. The model consists of a stress analysis and a failure analysis. A transient finite element analysis which was based on the higher-order shear deformation theory was adopted for calculating the stresses inside the laminated composite plates during impact. A failure analysis was used to predict the initial intraply matrix cracking and the shape and size of the interface delamination in the laminates. As a results, a shear matrix cracking which was governed by the transverse interlaminar shear stress occured at the middle layer near the midplane of laminates and a bending matrix cracking which was governed by the transverse inplane stress occured at the bottom layer near the surface of laminates. In a thick laminates, a shear matrix cracking generated first at the middle layer of laminates, but in a thin laminates, a bending matrix cracking generated first at the bottom layer of laminates.

The axisymmetric forward extrusion is analyzed by using the rigid-plastic finite element formulation. The distribution of stresses and strains as well as the deformation pattern in solid extrusion is very important for the improvement of product quality. The initial velocity field is determined by assuming the material as a Newtonian fluid through an arbitrarily shaped axisymmetric die. The workhardening effect and the friction of the die-material interface are considered in the formulation. Some reduction of area and die shapes(conical and biquadratic-curved) are chosen for computation. Experiments are carried out for steel alloy(SCM4) specimens using conical and curved dies. It is found that experimental observation is in good agreement with FEM results. The strain distribution is curved(biquadratic) dies is shown to be more uniform than in conical dies at the same reduction of area.
This paper is related to an analysis on the surface expansion in backward can extrusion process using spherical punches. It is generally known that the backward can extrusion process usually experiences severe normal pressure and heavy surface expansion. This is a reason why the backward can extrusion process is one of most difficult operations among many forging processes. Different punch nose radii have been applied to the simulation to investigate the effect of punch nose radius on the surface expansion, which is a major effort in this study. AA 2024 aluminum alloy is selected as a model material for investigation. Different frictional conditions have also been selected as a process parameter. The pressure applied on the punch has been also investigated since heavy surface expansion as well as high normal pressure on the tool usually leads to severe tribological conditions along the interface between material and tool. The simulation results are summarized in terms of surface expansion at different reduction in height, deformation patterns including strain distributions and maximum pressure exerted on the workpiece and punch, the effect of punch nose radius and the frictional condition on the surface expansion and the location and magnitude of maximum pressure exerted, respectively.
Microstructure and fracture behavior of a multi-phase low-density steel were investigated. After hot-rolling and heat treatment, the microstructure of low-density steel was composed of coarse ferrite grains and elongated bands which include second phases such as austenite, martensite and ${\kappa}$-carbide depending on holding time during isothermal heat treatment. After tensile test, microcracks were observed at martensite or ${\kappa}$-carbide interface in the elongated bands. Coarse ferrite grains showed cleavage fracture behavior regardless of second phase. The cleavage fracture of ferrite could be attributed to their coarse grain size and solute atoms that increase ductile-to-brittle transition temperature of ferrite. Despite of the tendency of cleavage fracture in coarse ferrite grains, a specimen having coarse spheroidized ${\kappa}$-carbide particles in the elongated bands showed high total elongation of 30%. Thus, the easiness of plastic deformation in the elongated band seems to play an important role in retardation of cleavage crack formation in coarse ferrite grains.
Mesoscale thermohaline structures of the meandering front in the Korea Strait during November 1976, 1980 and 1982 are studied by means of closely spaced oceanographic observations and the satellite infrared images. Strong thermal and salinity fronts coincide each other and show a wavelike meander motion with wavelengths of 40-60km and amplitudes of, 15-20km. Salinity minimum band of less than 33.0 is found along the onshore edge of the front. Width of the frontal zone corresponds approximately to the internal radius of deformation (R=5-10km) and the slope of density interface is confined to about 2R. A series of satellite infrared images with the interval of 4-5 days show a noticeable growth of frontal meander over the flat shelf west of the Korea Strait. Possible mechanisms of frontal meander and its growth are discussed.

This paper is concerned with the analysis of the forming load characteristics of a forward-backward can extrusion process. The analysis in this paper is extended to the selection of press frame capacity for producing efficiently final product at low cost. The possible extrusion processes to shape a forward-backward can part with different outer diameters are categorized to investigate quantitatively the forming load, forming energy and maximum pressure exerted on the die-material interface. The categorized processes are composed of combined and/or some basic extrusion processes. After the analysis of the forming load characteristics, the frame capacity of press suitable for a selected process could be determined along with securing the load capacity and with considering productivity. In addition, it is also suggested that different load capacities be selected for different dimensions of a part such as the wall thickness in forward direction. The work in this paper could be a good reference for analysis of complex extrusion and selection of proper frame capacity of press to achieve low production cost and thus high productivity.
