  • Graphical user interfaces (GUI) in modern software deliver information visually, and a well-designed interface can provide information to the use in an organized and intuitive manner while poorly-designed interfaces can cause visual inconvenience and confusion. In order to effectively deliver information to the user, visual attention should be placed on a prominent location in the image. This paper introduces a method based on a human visual system (HVS) that can improve Metro-style GUIs by reducing a user's workload to visually find information. Our method is designed with spatial mapping and color mapping for buttons in the Metro-style GUI. Also we define a metric for Metro-style GUI effectiveness, including an optimization algorithm. The results show that our method improves the performance of visual search tasks in a Metro-style GUI.

  • We report some recent results in the rewritable Blu-ray Disc with enhanced overwrite cyclability by using the growth dominant eutectic based Ge(Sb70Te30)+Sb recording layer, GeN interface layer and write strategy optimization. We have developed phase-change optical media with appropriate write strategy for 36(i.e., 1X)-72Mbps(i.e., 2X) dual speed Blu-ray Disc system and fur the future high speed optical data storage. For recording layer, eutectic-based Ge(Sb70Te30)+Sb material was used and Sb/Te ratio and Ge content were optimized to obtain proper erasability and archival stability of recorded amorphous marks. The recording layer is wrapped up in GeN interface layers to obtain overwrite cyclability and higher crystallization speed. In addition, we designed appropriate write strategy so called Time-Shifted Multipulse (TSMP) write strategy where starting position of multipulse parts are shined from reference clock. With this write strategy, the jitter characteristics of the disc was improved and we found that leading edge jitter was improved much more than trailing edge jitter in 1X-2X speed recording. Finally, we investigated the higher speed feasibility of 144Mbps(i.e., 4X) by adopting some elemental doping to the eutectic based Ag-In-Sb-Te recording layer and structural optimization of constitution layers in Blu-ray Disc. In the paper, we report the effect of Sn addition for the feasibility of higher speed recording. The addition of Sn shows increases of the crystallization speed of phase change recording layer.

  • Composite vessels for high pressure gas storage are commonly used these days because of their competitive weight reduction ability maintaining strong mechanical properties. To supplement permeability of composite under high pressure, it is usually lined by metal, which is called a Type 3 vessel. However, it has many difficulties to design the Type 3 vessel because of its complex geometry, fabrication process variables, etc. In this study, therefore, GUI (graphic user interface) optimal design code for Type 3 vessels was developed based on semi-geodesic algorithm in which various factors of geometry and fabrication variables are considered and genetic algorithm for optimization. In addition, hydrogen vessels for 350/700 bar that can be applied to FCVs(fuel cell vehicles) were designed using this code for verification.

  • The most critical research issue in MANET environment is on supporting reliable communication between various devices. Various Multi-Hop Routing Protocol studies have proceeded. However, some problems you might have found when you use the existing link state routing technique are that it increases Control Message Overhead and it is unstable when node moves in CR circumstance which has transformation of using channel and MIMC circumstance which uses a number of interfaces. This essay offers a technique which is based on On-Demand Hello and the other technique which used Broadcast Interface of optimization as a solution to decrease Control Message Overhead. Also it proposes Quick Route Restoration technique which is utilized by GPS and MPR Selection technique which consider mobility as a solution of stable communication when node moves. Those offered Routing Protocol and OPNET based simulator result will be expected to be an excellent comparison in related research fields.

  • This paper presents a new automatic TFT-LCD image quality optimization system. We also have developed new algorithms using 6-point programmable matching technique with reference gamma curve, and automatic power setting sequence. It optimizes automatically gamma adjustment and power setting registers in mobile TFT-LCD driver IC to reduce gamma correction error, adjusting time, and flicker. Developed algorithms and programs are generally applicable for most of the TFT-LCD modules. The proposed optimization system contains module-under-test (MUT, TFT-LCD module), control program, multimedia display tester for measuring luminance and flicker, and control board for interface between PC and TFT-LCD module. The control board is designed with DSP, and it supports various interfaces such as RGB and CPU. Developed automatic image quality optimization system showed significantly reduced gamma adjusting time, reduced flicker, and much less average gamma error than competing system. We believe that the proposed system is very useful to provide high image quality TFT-LCD and to reduce developing process time using optimized gamma-curve setting and automatic power setting.

  • In this paper, an integrated optimal design software system for structural components has been developed which interfaces existing commercial codes for CAD, CAE and Optimization. They include specialized optimal design software codes such as iSIGHT and VisualDOC, optimization module imbedded in CAD software developed by CAD developers, and optimal design software systems based on API of commercial CAD software. The advantages of the CAD imbedded optimal design approach and those of specialized optimal design software are taken to develop the system. The user defines optimal design formulation in the user interface for problem definition in the CAD control stage, where design variables are directly selectable from the CAD model and various properties and performance functions defined. The commercial CAD codes, Open I-DEAS are used for the development. The resulting software is minimally connected to CAD and CAE systems while keeping maximum independence from each other. This assures flexibility and freedom for problem definition. Fatigue life optimization is taken as a nontrivial application area. As a specific example, the shape design of a knuckle part of an automobile is performed, where the minimum fatigue life over the material domain in terms of the number of cycles of a curb strike are maximized under the constraint of not exceeding the current mass. The fatigue life has been improved by four times of the initial life. The developed software is illustrated to maintain the advantages of existing optimal design software systems while improving independency and flexibility.

  • The most critical rotating parts of a gas turbine engine are turbine blades and disc, given that they must operate under severe conditions such as high turbine inlet temperature, high speeds, and high compression ratios. Owing to theses operating conditions and high rotational speed energy, some failures caused by turbine disks and blades are categorized into catastrophic and critical, respectively. To maximize the margin of structural integrity, we aim to optimize the vulnerable area of disc-blade interface region. Then, to check the robustness of the obtained optimized solution, we evaluated structural reliability under uncertainties such as dimensional tolerance and fatigue life variant. The results highlighted the necessity for and limitations of optimization which is one of deterministic methods, and pointed out the requirement for introducing reliability-based design optimization which is one of stochastic methods. Thermal-structural coupled-filed analysis and contact analysis are performed for them.

  • In sports video games, especially ball games, motion capture techniques are used to reproduce the ball-driven performances. The amount of motion data needed to create different situations in which athletes exchange balls is bound to increase exponentially with resolution. This paper proposes how avatars in virtual worlds can not only imitate professional athletes in ball games, but also create and edit their actions effectively. First, various ball-handling movements are recorded using motion sensors. We do not really have to control an actual ball; imitating the motions is enough. Next, motion is created by specifying what to pass the ball through, and then making motion to handle the ball in front of the motion sensor. The ball's occupant then passes the ball to the user-specified target through a motion that imitates the user's, and the process is repeated. The method proposed can be used as a convenient user interface for motion based games for players who handle balls.

  • A seismic evaluation is made of the response to horizontal ground shaking of cantilever retaining walls using the finite element model in three dimensional space whose verification is provided analytically through the modal analysis technique in case of the assumptions of fixed base, complete bonding behavior at the wall-soil interface, and elastic behavior of soil. Thanks to the versatility of the finite element model, the retained medium is then idealized as a uniform, elastoplastic stratum of constant thickness and semi-infinite extent in the horizontal direction considering debonding behavior at the interface in order to perform comprehensive soil-structure interaction (SSI) analyses. The parameters varied include the flexibility of the wall, the properties of the soil medium, and the characteristics of the ground motion. Two different finite element models corresponding with flexible and rigid wall configurations are studied for six different soil types under the effects of two different ground motions. The response quantities examined incorporate the lateral displacements of the wall relative to the moving base and the stresses in the wall in all directions. The results show that the wall flexibility and soil properties have a major effect on seismic behavior of cantilever retaining walls and should be considered in design criteria of cantilever walls. Furthermore, the results of the numerical investigations are expected to be useful for the better understanding and the optimization of seismic design of this particular type of retaining structure.
