The residual thermal stresses at the interface corner between the elastic fiber and the viscoelastic matrix of a two-dimensional unidirectional laminate due to cooling from cure temperature down to room temperature were studied. The matrix material was assumed to be thermorheologically simple. The time-domain boundary element method was employed to investigate the nature of stresses on the interface. Numerical results show that very large stress gradients are present at the interface corner and this stress singularity might lead to local yielding or fiber-matrix debonding.
This paper proposes a method which selects essential elements in a human evaluation model using the Choquet integral based on fuzzy measures, and applies the model to the evaluation of human interface. Three kinds of concepts are defined to select essential elements. Increment Degree implies the increment degree from fuzzy measures of composed elements to the fuzzy measure of a combined element. Average of Increment Degree of an element means the relative possibility of superadditivity of the fuzzy measure of each combined element. Necessity Degree means the selection degree of each combined element as a result of the human evaluation. A task experiment, which consists of a static work and two dynamic works, is performed by the use of some human interfaces. In the experiment, (1) a warning sound which gives an attention to subjects, (2) a color vision which can be distinguished easily or not, (3) the size of working area and (4) a response of confirmation that is given from an interface, are considered as human interface elements. Subjects answer the questionnaire after the experiment. From the data of the questionnaire, fuzzy measures are identified and are applied to the proposed model. Effectiveness of the proposed model is confirmed by the comparison of human interface elements extracted from the proposed model and those from the questionnaire.
We study the effect of numerical quadrature in space on semidiscrete and fully discrete piecewise linear finite element methods for parabolic interface problems. Optimal $L^2(L^2)$ and $L^2(H^1)$ error estimates are shown to hold for semidiscrete problem under suitable regularity of the true solution in whole domain. Further, fully discrete scheme based on backward Euler method has also analyzed and optimal $L^2(L^2)$ norm error estimate is established. The error estimates are obtained for fitted finite element discretization based on straight interface triangles.
In construction facilities such as bridges, the fluid boundary layer(or water film) is formed at the structure-soil interface by the inflow into the system due to rainfall or/and rising ground-water. As a result, the structure-soil interaction(SSI) state changes into the structure-fluid-soil interaction(SFSI) state. In general, construction facilities may be endangered by the inflow of water into the soil foundation. Thus, it is important to predict the dynamic SFSI responses accurately so that the facilities may be properly designed against such dangers. It is desired to have the robust tools of attaining such a purpose. However, there has not been any report of a method for the SFSI analyses. The objective of this study is to propose an efficient method of finite element modelling using the new interface element named hybrid interface element capable of giving reasonable predictions of the dynamic SFSI response. This element enables the simulation of the limited normal tensile resistance and the tangential hydro-plane behaviour, which has not been preceded in the previous studies. The hybrid interface element was tested numerically for its validity and employed in the analysis of SFSI responses of the continuous bridge subjected to seismic load under rainfall or/and rising ground-water condition. It showed that dynamic responses of the continuous bridge resting on direct foundation may be amplified under rainfall condition and consequently lead to significant variation of stresses.
This paper presents a new approach to simulate fluid-solid interaction problems involving non-matching interfaces. The coupling between fluid and solid domains with dissimilar finite element meshes consisting of 4-node quadrilateral elements is achieved by using the interface element method (IEM). Conditions of compatibility between fluid and solid meshes are satisfied exactly by introducing the interface elements defined on interfacing regions. Importantly, a consistent transfer of loads through matching interface element meshes guarantees the present method to be an efficient approach of the solution strategy to fluid-solid interaction problems. An arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) description is adopted for the fluid domain, while for the solid domain an updated Lagrangian formulation is considered to accommodate finite deformations of an elastic structure. The stabilized equal order velocity-pressure elements for incompressible flows are used in the motion of fluids. Fully coupled equations are solved simultaneously in a single computational domain. Numerical results are presented for fluid-solid interaction problems involving nonmatching interfaces to demonstrate the effectiveness of the methodology.

To investigate the soil-pile interactive performance under lateral loads, a set of laboratory model tests was conducted on remoulded test bed of soft clay and medium dense sand. Then, a simplified boundary element analysis had been carried out assuming floating pile. In case of soft clay, it has been observed that lateral loads on piles can initiate the formation of a gap, soil heave and the tension crack in the vicinity of the soil surface and the interface, whereas in medium dense sand, a semi-elliptical depression zone can develop. Comparison of test and boundary element results indicates the accuracy of the solution developed. However, in the boundary element analysis, the possible shear stresses likely to be developed at the interface are ignored in order to simplify the existing complex equations. Moreover, it is unable to capture the influence of base restraint in case of a socketed pile. To bridge up this gap and to study the influence of the initial stress state and interface parameters, a field based case-study of laterally-loaded pile in layered soil with socketed tip is explored and modelled using the finite element method. The results of the model have been verified against known field measurements from a case-study. Parametric studies have been conducted to investigate the influence of the coefficient of lateral earth pressure and the interface strength reduction factor on the results of the model.
The boundary element method was used for studying singularities of an interface crack with contact zones. Because the contact zone size was extremely small in a tention field, a large number of Gaussian points were is used for numerical integration of the Kernels. In order to estimate the contact zone size, iteration method was used. The interface crack tips with contact zones showed no oscillatory behavior and J-integral values across the interface were conserved.
Debonding of cement-femoral stem interface has been suggested as a initial focus of loosening mechanism in many previous studies of cemented total hip replacement. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of debonding of cement-femoral stem interface to the bone-cement interface by using three-dimensional non-liner finite element analysis. Three cases of partial debonded, full debonded, full bonded cement-bone interface were modelled with partial bonding of distal 70mm from the tip of femoral stem. Each situation was studied under loading stimulating one-leg stanced gait of 68kg patient. The results showed that under partial and full debonded cement-stem interface condition the peak von Mises stress(3.1 MPa) were observed at the cement of bone-cement interface just under the calcar of proximal medial of femur, and sudden high peak stresses(3.5MPa) were developed at the distal tip of femoral stem at the lateral bone-cement interface in all 3 cases of bonding. The stresses were transfered very little to the cement of upper lateral bone-cement interface in partial and full debonded cases. Thus, once partial or full debonded cement-femoral stem interface occured, 3 times higher stress concentration were developed on the cement of proximal medial bone-cement interface than full bonded interface, and these could cause loosening of cemented total hip replacement. Clinically, preservation of more rigid cement-femoral stem interface may be important factor to prevent loosening of femoral stem.
Two methods were developed for analyzing problems with two adjacent sub-domains modeled by different kinds of elements in finite element method. Each sub-domain can be defined independently without the consideration of equivalent division with common nodes used for the interface. These two methods employ an individual interface to accomplish the compatibility. The MLSA method uses the moving least square approximation which is the basic formulation for Element Free Galerkin Method to formulate the interface. The displacement field assumed by this method does not pass through nodes on the common boundary. Therefore, nodes can be chosen freely for this method. The results show that the MLSA method has better approximation than traditional methods.
