  • In this study, the behavior characteristics of specimen strengthened with CFRP plate were analyzed according to the change of temperature. CFRP plate itself has a good resistance at the high temperature, but epoxy used as a adhesive is lost its bonding strength at the relatively low temperature. Therefore, this study carries out experiment on the beams slot-bonded with CFRP plates in order to maintain the successful bonding strength of epoxy at high temperature. It is presented that the range of glass transition temperature is 60-8$0^{\circ}C$ and RC beams slot-bonded with CFRP plate shows more increasing resistance and failure load than that of interface bonded at the high temperature.

  • The paper presents the results of experimental studies on two strengthening methods for reinforced concrete (RC) slabs. Bending tests on RC slabs have been carried out to investigate the influence of the increased thickness and externally bonded carbon fiber sheets. The interfaces of new and old concrete of increased thickness specimens have been chipped and treated with bonding agent. The conclusions have been reached as followings. (1) The behavior of specimens with chipped interface is good enough to calculate flexural strength of RC slabs for increased depth. (2) The flexural stiffness of increased depth specimen is severely increased and the deformation of RC slabs is controled. (3) The specimens with externally bonded carbon fiber sheets can be assumed to behave monolithically.

  • This study was designed for comparison of shear bond strengths and failure patterns of four experimental groups which combinated mesh-backed metal brackets and texture based ceramic brackets (Transcend series $2000^{(TM)}$) with chemically cured resin (Mono $Lok2^{(TM)}$) and visible light cured resin $(Transbond^{(TM)})$. Brackets were bonded on the extracted human bicuspids, after etching them by manufacturer's recommand, and the shear bond strengths were measured on the Instron machine after 24 hrs passed in the $37^{\circ}C$ water bath. The results were as follows. 1. Ceramic brackets, transcend series $2000^{(TM)}$, bonded with $MonoLok2^{(TM)}$ showed statistically higher shear bond strength than mesh-backed metal brackets bonded with $MonoLok2^{(TM)}$. 2. There was no significant difference in shear bond strengths between metal and ceramic brackets bonded with $(Transbond^{(TM)})$. 3. Ceramic brackets bonded with both $(Transbond^{(TM)})$) and $MonoLok2^{(TM)}$ showed primarily fractures between brackets adhesive interface. 4. Enamel crack was not found in anyone specimen.

  • For reliable determination of mechanical characteristics of adhesively bonded joints used e.g. as input data for computer-aided design of complex components, the thick-adherend tensile-shear test according to ISO 11003-2 is the most important material testing method. Although the total displacement of the joint is measured across the polymer layer directly in the overlap zone in order to minimize the influence of the stepped adherends, the substrate deformation must be taken into account within the framework of the evaluation of the shear modulus and the maximum shear strain, at least when high-strength adhesives are applied. In the standard ISO 11003-2 version of 1993, it was prescribed to perform the substrate deformation correction by means of testing a one-piece reference specimen. The authors, however, pointed to the excessive demands on the measuring accuracy of the extensometers connected with this technique in industrial practice and alternatively proposed a numerical deformation analysis of a dummy specimen. This idea of a mathematical correction was included in the revised ISO 11003-2 version of 2001 but in the simplified form of an analytical method based on Hooke's law of elasticity for small strains. In the present work, it is shown that both calculation techniques yield considerably discordant results. As experimental assessment would require high-precision distance determination (e.g. laser extensometer), finite element analyses of the deformation behavior of the bonded joint are performed in order to estimate the accuracy of the obtained substrate deformation corrections. These simulations reveal that the numerical correction technique based on the finite element deformation modeling of the reference specimen leads to considerably more realistic results.

  • The fatigue crack propagation characteristics were investigated on dissimilar friction weld of two kind of heat-resisting steels (STR3 and STR35) commonly used in valve materials for vehicles. A small circular artificial defect was machined to induce fatigue crack at bonded line, heat affected zone and base metal of the weld on the surface of the specimens. From the results of the experiment, the fatigue limits of the materials STR3 and STR35 were obtained to be 429.0MPa and 409.4MPa respectably. The STR35 base metal and 1.0mm HAZ specimens showed 190% and 82% higher fatigue life than STR3 base metal. And the fatigue life of 1.0mm HAZ specimen was shown 99% on STR3 and 29% on STR35 higher than that of their base metal. But the fatigue life of weld interface specimen was shown 18% on STR3 and 72% on STR35 lower than that of their base metal because of the weld interface separation.

  • Bonding of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites has become a popular technique for strengthening concrete structures in recent years. The bond stress between concrete and CFRP is the main factor determining the strength, rigidity, failure mode and behavior of a reinforced concrete member strengthened with CFRP. The accurate evaluation of the strain is required for analytical calculations and design processes. In this study, the strain between concrete and bonded CFRP sheets across the notch is tested. In this paper, indirect axial tension is applied to CFRP bonded test specimen by a four point bending tests. The variables studied in this research are CFRP sheet width, bond length and the concrete compression strength. Furthermore, the effect of a crack- modeled as a notch- on the strain distribution is studied. It is observed that the strain in the CFRP to concrete interface reaches its maximum values near the crack tips. It is also observed that extending the CFRP sheet more than to a certain length does not affect the strength and the strain distribution of the bonding. The stress distribution obtained from experiments are compared to Chen and Teng's (2001) analytical model.

  • The purpose of this study was to elucidate the effect of benzalkonium chloride on tensile bond strength of BPDM/HEMA dentin bonding. One hundred sixty dentin specimens from freshly extracted bovine mandibular incisors were used, and 0, 0.02, 0.1 or 0.5% benzalkonium chloride solution was applied to the dentin specimen with/after phosphoric acid. 32% phosphoric acid was used when the specimens were bonded with One-Step$^{TM}$, a BPDM/HEMA system and 10% was used when bonded with All-Bond$^{(R)}$ 2, a NTG-GMA/BPDM system. Aelitefil$^{TM}$ composite resin was bonded to the pretreated dentin specimen with the use of All-Bond$^{(R)}$ 2 or One-Step$^{TM}$ dentin bonding agent. After the bonded specimens were stored in $37^{\circ}C$ distilled water for 24 hours, tensile bond strength was measured. The fractured dentin specimens were examined under the scanning electron microscope. The results were as follows : Benzalkonium chloride application after acid-treatment resulted in decrease of dentin bond strength of One-Step$^{TM}$, a BPDM/HEMA system (p>0.05). Benzalkonium chloride application did not exert any influence on dentin bond strength of All-Bond$^{(R)}$ 2, a NTG-GMA/BPDM system (p>0.05). There was no relationship between the concentration or application method of benzalkonium chloride and the dentin bond strength of One-Step$^{TM}$ or All-Bon$^{(R)}$ 2 (p<0.05). On SEM examination of the fractured dentin-resin interface, while mixed failure was prominent in dentin bonding with One-Step$^{TM}$, adhesive and mixed failures were seen together in dentin bonding with All-Bond$^{(R)}$ 2 regardless of the concentration and application method of benzalkonium chloride.

  • This paper describes the concept and the characteristics of hyper interfacial bonding developed as a new concept joining process for UFG (ultra-fine grained) steel. Hyper interfacial bonding process is characterized by instantaneous surface melting bonding which involves a series of steps, namely, surface heating by high frequency induction, the rapid removing of heating coil and joining by pressing specimens. UFG steels used in this study have the average grain size of 1.25 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. The surface of specimen can be rapidly heated up and melted within 0.2s. Temperature gradient near heated surface is relatively steep, and peak temperature drastically fell down to about 1100K at the depth of 2~3mm away from the heated surface of specimen. Bainite is observed near bond interface, and also M-A (martensite-austenite) islands are observed in HAZ. Grain size increases with increasing heating power, however, the grain size in bonded zone can be restrained under 11 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. Hardened zone is limited to near bond interface, and the maximum hardness is Hv350~Hv390.

  • Fluxless flip chip bonding process using plasma treatment instead of flux was investigated. The effect of plasma process parameters on tin-oxide etching characteristics were estimated with Auger depth profile analysis. The die shear test was performed to evaluate the adhesion strength of the flip chip bonded after plasma treatment. The thickness of oxide layer on tin surface was reduced after Ar+H2 plasma treatment. The addition of H2 improved the oxide etching characteristics by plasma. The die shear strength of the plasma-treated Sn-Pb solder flip chip was higher than that of non-treated one but lower than that of fluxed one. The difference of the strength between plasma-treated specimen and non-treated one increased with increase in bonding temperature. The plasma-treated flip chip fractured at solder/TSM interface at low bonding temperature while the fracture occurred at solder/UBM interface at higher bonding temperature.
