  • In order to measure the segmental impedance of the body, a bioelectrical impedance measurement system (BIMS) using multi-frequency applying method and two-electrode method was implemented in this study. The BIMS was composed of constant current source, automatic gain control, and multi-frequency generation units. Three experiments were performed using the BIMS and a commercial impedance analyzer (CIA). First, in order to evaluate the performance of the BIMS, four RC circuits connected with a resistor and capacitor in serial and/or parallel were composed. Bioelectrical impedance (BI) was measured by applying multi-frequencies -5, 10, 50, 100, 150, 200, 300, 400, and 500 KHz - to each circuit. BI values measured by the BIMS were in good agreement with those obtained by the CIA for four RC circuits. Second, after measuring BI at each frequency by applying multi-frequency to the left and right forearm and the popliteal region of the body, BI values measured by the BIMS were compared to those acquired by the CIA. Third, when the distance between electrodes was changed to 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, and 15 cm, BI by the BIMS was also compared to BI from the CIA. In addition, BI of extracellular fluid (ECF) was measured at each frequency ranging from 10 to 500 KHz. BI of intracellular fluid (ICF) was calculated by subtracting BI of ECF measured at 500 kHZ from BI measured at seven frequencies ranging from 50 to 500 KHz. BI of ICF and ECF decreased as the frequency increased. BI of ICF sharply decreased at frequencies above 300 KHz.

  • Today it is critical for all engineers to have the capability of interacting in teams with members of different background and to meet the challenges that they will encounters in their careers. To satisfy such needs multidisciplinary engineering-design courses are attracting more attentions than ever in the engineering education community. In this paper we analyze the learning effectiveness of interdisciplinary design teams in an engineering design course in Dongguk University. The comparison analysis between monodisciplinary teams and interdisciplinary ones demonstrates higher learning effectiveness of interdisciplinary teams. In addition, the student evaluation of learning effectiveness points out that communication skill is one of the most important factors for a successful project. Such results show that multidisciplinary design courses must gain wider acceptance in engineering education and engineering students must have more chances to experience multidisciplinary teamwork.

  • The free-living photoheterotrophic Gram-negative bacterium Rhodobacter sphaeroides possesses a quorum-sensing (QS) regulatory system mediated by CerR-CerI, a member of the LuxR-LuxI family. To identify the genes affected by the regulatory system, random lacZ fusions were generated in the genome of R. sphaeroides strain 2.4.1 using a promoter-trapping vector, pSG2. About 20,000 clones were screened and 23 showed a significantly different level of ${\beta}$-gal activities upon the addition of synthetic 7,8-cis-N-tetradecenoyl-homoserine lactone (RAI). Among these 23 clones, the clone showing the highest level of induction was selected for further study, where about a ten-fold increase of ${\beta}$-gal activity was exhibited in the presence of RAI and induction was shown to be required for cerR. In this clone, the lacZ reporter was inserted in a putative gene that exhibited a low homology with catD. A genetic analysis showed that the expression of the catD homolog was initiated from a promoter of another gene present upstream of the catD. This upstream gene showed a strong homology with luxR and hence was named qsrR (quorum-sensing regulation regulator). A comparison of the total protein expression profiles for the wild-type cells and qsrR-null mutant cells using two-dimensional gel electrophoresis and a MALDI-TOF analysis allowed the identification of sets of genes modulated by the luxR homolog.

  • Recently, the hydrophobic surface has been attracted because of the excellent opto-physical properties. Various processing methods such as chemical, mechanical, photolithographic and laser processing are competitively introduced for fabrication of hydrophobic surface of polymer, metal and ceramics. In this paper, we fabricated the hydrophobic surface of copper metal by simple method which irradiated 355 nm UV-pulsed laser in order to shape microgrooves and increased surface roughness through oxidation process at room temperature. Finally the contact angle is dramatically increased by maximum $45^{\circ}$, as a result of oxidation which simply created nanostructures on the microstructures without expensive chemical process.

  • As a basic study for the development of pilot-scale distillation process of waste photoresist strippers from semiconductor industry, lab-scale experiments for the recovery of NMP (N-methy1-pyrrolidione) and BDG (Butyldiglycol) from waste photoresist strippers have been made using a spinning band vacuum distillation column. Purities of NMP and BDG obtained from the present experiments were higher than 99.5%. Furthermore, water content was less than 1000 ppm, color grade(APHA) less than 50, most metal contents except sodium less than 1 ppb. Those results indicate that NMP and BDG reclamed by distillation satisfy the their specifications required for the formulation of new photoresist strippers. Recovery rate of NMP and BDG was 96 and 53%, respectively, for type A, and 93 and 57%, respectively, for type B waste PR stripper solution.

  • Discrimination of Parkinson's disease (PD) from Essential tremor (ET) is often misdiagnosed in clinical practice. Since tremor is time-varying signal, and dominant and harmonic frequencies are shown in tremor only with moderate or severe symptom, there are some limitations to use frequency related features. Moreover, patients with PD or ET can suffer from both resting tremor and postural tremor. In this study, 28 patients with PD and 17 patients with ET were enrolled. Tremor was measured with accelerations on the more affected hand during resting and postural conditions. The ratio of root mean square (RMS) of resting tremor to RMS of postural tremor, the mean coefficients of autocorrelation function (ACF), and the mean of differences of two adjacent coefficients of ACF at resting and postural were calculated and compared between PD and ET. The performance showed 98% accuracy with support vector machine and leave-one-out cross validation. In addition, the method accurately differentiated the patients with tremor-dominant PD from patients with ET, with 100% accuracy. Therefore, the developed algorithm can assist clinicians in diagnosing and categorizing patients with tremor, especially, patients with mild symptom or the early stage of a disease, for proper treatment.

  • A Ventricular Assist Device(YAD) is used to support the injured natural heart So. when considering a control algorithm for YAD. it is important to reduce a natural heart's load to enhance its recovery condition. To reduce natural heart's load, a counterpulsation algorithm is used commonly. In this study, we developed a counterpulsation control algorithm for moving-actuator type VAD and tested its usefulness using in vitro MOCK circulatory system. To notice a natural heart's Pumping status, electrocardiogram(ECG) signal was used and as a result of test. the counterpulsation effect between YAD and a natural heart was occurred and Automatic Control Mode Transition was occurred properly.

  • In this study, we measured the blood flow on arm by non-invasive method and implemented a system to measure variation of the blood flow by estimating bio-electrical impedance and arterial pressure according to cuff pressure. The implemented system measured impedance variation according to pressure variation applied by artificial cuff pressure on the measuring position. The system consisted of pressure measuring part and impedance measuring part using 4-electrode method. Pressure measuring part was composed of semiconductor pressure sensor and electronic circuit for signal processing of sensor output signal. In addition, impedance measuring part was composed of constant current source circuit and lock-in amplifier for detecting impedance signal. We conducted experiments of impedance measuring part using standard resistance for performance evaluation of the implemented system. In addition we experimented to estimate variation of the blood flow by measuring impedances of the experimental group. We estimated ratio of the blood flow resistance using mean arterial pressure and variation of the blood flow. As a result the ratio of the blood flow resistance and variation of blood flow were in an inverse relationship with each other and the correlation coefficient was -0.96776.

  • One of the methods for Parkinson's disease(PD) tremor evaluation is the Clinical Tremor Rating Scale(CTRS). However, the method has some limitations that clinician ratings can vary because the scores are subjectively rated. In addition, most researches usually collected data measured on the more affected arm. In this study, we developed a portable wearable system(SNUMAP system) for measuring PD tremor. The SNUMAP system captures 3-dimensional motion using tri-accelerometer and tri-gyroscope on finger and wrist. 40 PD patients participated in resting tremor and postural tremor tasks, while wearing the system on both hands simultaneously. Estimated tremor scores from Leave-One-Out Cross Validation for regression were highly correlated to the average clinician CTRS scores for rest tremor($r^2$ = 0.87, RMSE = 0.48) and postural tremor($r^2$ = 0.82, RMSE = 0.48). Therefore, the quantitative assessment model can improve treatment of PD patients.

  • In sleep monitoring system, polysomnography (PSG) is the gold-standard but previous studies revealed that attaching numerous amount of sensors disturb sleep during the test which is the fundamental disadvantage of PSG. We suggest an unconstrained rapid-eye-movement (REM) sleep monitoring method measured with polyvinylidene (PVDF) film-based sensor for the normal and the obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) patients. Nine normal subjects and seventeen OSA patients have participated in the study. During REM sleep, rate and variability of respiration are known to be greater than in other sleep stages. Based on this phenomena, respiratory signals of participants were unconstrainedly measured using the PVDF-based sensor with the PSG and REM sleep were extracted from the average rate and variability of respiration. In epoch-by-epoch REM sleep detection, proposed method classified REM sleep with an average sensitivity of 72.3%, specificity of 92.5%, accuracy of 88.9%, and kappa statistic of 0.60 compared to the results of PSG. Student's t-test showed no significant difference between the results of normal and OSA group. This method is potentially applicable to REM sleep detection in homing environment or ambulatory monitoring.
