The present study numerically investigate the detailed structure of the syngas diffusion flames. In order to realistically represent the turbulence-chemistry interaction, the transient flamelet model has been applied to simulate the combustion processes and $NO_X$ formation in the syngas turbulent nonpremixed flames. The single mixture fraction formulation is extended to account for the effects of the secondary inlet mixture. Computations are the wide range of syngas compositions and oxidizer dilutions. Based on numerical results, the detailed discussion has been made for the effects of syngas composition and oxidizer dilution on the structure of the syngas-air and syngas-oxygen turbulent nonpremixed flames.
The present study has numerically investigated the effects of the oxidizer-side nitrogen dilution on the precise structure and NOx formation characteristics of the turbulent syngas nonpremixed flames. Eulerian particle flamelet model was used to predicted the NOx formation characteristics in the turbulent syngas swirling nonpremixed flames. Current numerical simulation was conducted for the syngas gas turbine combustor. Numericla results indicate that as the H2O portion is increased in diluent, the formation of NOx decreased effectively in turbulent syngas swirl nonpremixed flames.
This study has numerically modelled the combustion processes of the turbulent swirling premixed lifted flames in the low-swirl burner (LSB). In these turbulent swirling premixed flames, the four tangentially-injected air jets induce the turbulent swirling flow which plays the crucial role to stabilize the turbulent lifted flame. In the present approach, the turbulence-chemistry interaction is represented by the level-set based flamelet model. Two-dimensional and three-dimensional computations are made for the various swirl numbers and nozzle length. In terms of the centerline velocity profiles and flame liftoff heights, numerical results are compared with experimental data The three-dimensional approach yields the much better conformity with agreements with measurements without any analytic assumptions on the inlet swirl profiles, compared to the two-dimensional approach. Numerical clearly results indicate that the present level-set based flamelet approach has realistically simulated the structure and stabilization mechanism of the turbulent swirling stoichiometric and lean-premixed lifted flames in the low-swirl burner.

Numerical study was conducted to clarify effects of added $H_2O$ for the downstream interaction between $H_2$-air and CO-air premixed flames in counterflow configuration. The reaction mechanism adopted was Davis model which had been known to be well in agreement with reliable experimental data. The results showed that both lean and rich flammable limits were reduced in increase of strain rate. The most discernible difference between the two with and without having $H_2O$ and/or $H_2$ addition into $H_2$-air and CO-air premixtures was two flammable islands for the former and one island for the latter at high strain flame conditions. Even a small amount of $H_2$, in which $H_2$-air premixed flame cannot be sustained by itself, participates in CO oxidation, thereby altering the CO-oxidation reaction path from the main reaction route $CO+O_2{\rightarrow}CO_2+O$ with a very long chemical time in CO-air flame to the OH-related reaction routes including $CO+OH{\rightarrow}CO_2+H$ with very short chemical times. This intrinsic nature alters flame stability maps appreciably. The results also showed that chemical effects of added $H_2O$ help lean flames at relatively low strain rate be sustained, and suppress the flame stabilization at high strain rates.

Acoustic-pressure response of diluted hydrogen-air diffusion flames is investigated numerically by adopting a fully unsteady analysis of flame structures in low and high pressure regimes. As acoustic frequency increases, finite-rate chemistry is enhanced through a nonlinear accumulation of heat release rate for any pressure regime, leading to a high amplification index. Same numerical results are analyzed with application of a pressure-sensitive time lag model, and thereby, interaction index and time lag are calculated for each pressure regime. The interaction index has the largest value in each pressure regime at an acoustic frequency near 1000 Hz. In a high-pressure regime, flames are more unstable than in a low-pressure regime. The interaction index shows a good agreement with the amplification index.
The present study is focused on the development of the RIF (Representative Interactive Flamelet) model which can overcome the shortcomings of conventional approach based on the steady flamelet library. Due to the ability for interactively describing the transient behaviors of local flame structures with CFD solver, the RIF model can effectively account for the detailed mechanisms of $NO_x$ formation including thermal NO path, prompt and nitrous $NO_x$ formation, and reburning process by hydrocarbon radical without any ad-hoc procedure. The flamelet time of RIFs within a stationary turbulent flame may be thought to be Lagrangian flight time. In context with the RIF approach, this study adopts the Eulerian Particle Flamelet Model (EPFM) with mutiple flamelets which can realistically account for the spatial inhomogeneity of scalar dissipation rate. In order to systematically evaluate the capability of Eulerian particle flamelet model to predict the precise flame structure and NO formation in the multi-dimensional elliptic flames, two methanol bluffbody flames with two different injection velocities are chosen as the validation cases. Numerical results suggest that the present EPFM model has the predicative capability to realistically capture the essential features of flame structure and $NO_x$ formation in the bluff-body stabilized flames.
Characteristic of turbulent nonpremixed interacting flames are investigated experimentally 8 or 9 nozzles are arranged in the shape of matrix or circle. When there is no center nozzle, flame is more stable than with center nozzle case. It is shown that these blowout limit enlargements are related with the recirculation of burnt gases. The interacting flame base was not located at the stoichiometric point. NO concentrations of interacting flame are smaller than that of single flame using same area nozzle.

The effects of burnt gas mixing, which can be caused by turbulent eddy mixing, on the interaction and extinction characteristics of premixed flames are analyzed using large activation energy asymptotics adopting counterflow as a model problem. The results show that the burnt gas mixing, preferential diffusion and heat loss affect the fuel consumption rate, flame temperature and the oxidizer concentration at the flame which influence the flame behavior and the extinction characteristics.
Combustion in a narrow space has been interested as a model of meso-scale combustors (or micro-combustors). Premixed flames have been used to overcome flame quenching in a narrow space and non-premixed flames have been used to improve flame stabilization. In this study, overall characteristics of premixed flame and non-premixed flame in narrow combustion spaces were reviewed. Various effects such as the flow velocity distribution, thermal interaction, enhanced mass diffusion were discussed and an eventual structure of the flame at the extinction limit was introduced.
The stoichiometric methan/air premixed turbulent flames at the axisymmetric Bunsen burner situation are numerically investigated. To account for the chemistry-turbulence interaction in the turbulent premixed flames, the steady laminar flamelet library method has been adopted. The flame front is tracked by using the Level-Set Approach. Turbulence is represented by the ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ modeling with a Pope's correction. The detailed comparison between prediction and measurement has made for the flame field in terms of velocity, turbulent kinetic energy, and normarlized temperature.
