  • The ASCE formula of pipeline' soil interaction force is the basis of semi-analytical relationship for buried pipelines subjected to longitudinal permanent ground deformation due to seismic induced liquefaction. However, since the ASCE formula has been developed based on the stiffness of non-liquefied region, it is needed to modify for the varied stiffness of liquefied region. With this object, the consideration of decreasing effect of soil stiffness in liquefied region is made: i.e. the spatial distributions of pipeline. soil interaction force in liquefied region. It means that the improved formula can reflect various patterns of permanent ground deformation more realistically. Through the comparative analyses using both the improved and ASCE formula, the applicability of the improved, the limitation of the existing formula and semi-analytical relationship are discussed.

  • A numerical approach based on a potential flow method is developed to simulate the unsteady interaction between propeller and rudder. In this approach, a panel method is used to solve the flow around the rudder and a vortex lattice method is used to solve the flow around the propeller, respectively. An iterative procedure is adopted to solve the interaction between propeller and rudder. The effects of one component on the other are evaluated by using induced velocities due to the other component at every time step. A fully unsteady wake alignment algorithm is implemented into the vortex lattice method to simulate the unsteady propeller flow. The Rosenhead-Moore core model is employed during the wake alignment procedure to avoid the singularities and instability. The Lamb-Oseen vortex model is adopted in the present method to decay the vortex strength around the rudder and to eliminate unrealistically high induced velocity. The present methods are applied to predict the performance of a cavitating horn-type rudder in the presence of a 6-bladed propeller. The predicted cavity patterns compare well with those observed from the experiments.

  • In order to study the insect-insect interaction of the insect community associated with Rumex obtusifolius. this experiment was designed in such a way that the feeding of one insect could indirectly affect the subsequent insect species through the changes in host plant (plant mediated insect-insect interaction ). Philaenus spumarius and Gastrophysa viridula were selected for the experiment. To investigate the effect of P. spumarius feeding on the ecology of G. viridula, first, statistical analyses were carried out. As results. no significant difference between Control and Experimental was found in the development patterns (Repeated Measures ANOVA, F=0.744, p=0.667) and survivorships (F=0.373. p=0.990). As the results from this experiment show, there was no effect on the ecology of G. viridula due to the previous feeding by P. spumarius on R. obtusifolius leaves.

  • A hydraulic gear pump is widely used in many industrial applications to provide both high pressure and high flow rate by physical displacement of finite volume of fluid with each revolution. In this study, two dimensional fluid-structure interaction simulation of gear pump flow was carried out to examine detailed complex flow patterns and structural stress distribution on rotors by using a commercial software ADINA. The effect of rotor clearance size on the flow characteristics, specially the temporal variation of velocity and pressure field, which is a main source of flow noise, also was investigated.

  • High-fidelity RANS simulations are presented for a ducted marine propulsor, including verification & validation (V&V) using available experimental fluid dynamics (EFD) data. CFDSHIP-IOWA is used with $\textsc{k}-\omega$ turbulence model and extensions for relative rotating coordinate system and Chimera overset grids. The mesh interpolation code PEGASUS is used for the exchange of the flow information between the overset grids. Intervals V&V for thrust, torque, and profile averaged radial velocity just downstream of rotor tip are reasonable in comparison with previous results. Flow pattern displays interaction and merging of tip-leakage and trailing edge vortices. In interaction region, multiple peaks and vorticity are smaller, whereas in merging region, better agreement with EFD. Tip-leakage vortex core position, size, circulation, and cavitation patterns for $\sigma=5$ also show a good agreement with EFD, although vortex core size is larger and circulation in interaction region is smaller.

  • Factors affecting foreign language learning task are diverse in nature due to the different social and cultural backgrounds so that learners have to somehow use strategies and expressions to adjust diverse factors to their learning environments. The main purpose of this paper is to show how important NNS vs. NNs interaction through CCDL can be in their enhancement of English proficiency by giving examples from their chatting conversation(written conversation) data collected for over two semesters. Chatting as a means of synchronous communication interaction between students from two different cultural backgrounds can act as a predictor of foreign language achievement. Chatting and Telemeet activities have their own advantages in enhancing communicative competence when learning English. By engaging in these synchronous communication activities learners of English from different cultural backgrounds can acquire unique strategies and expressions from which they learn from each other. In short, this study advocates the importance of strategies and patterns foreign language learners can acquire from interaction among culturally different peer groups.

  • Employing of 13C stable-isotopes in NMR metabolomics can give unique splitting patterns and coupling constants information originated from 13C-13C coupling interaction that provide an important structural information regarding the cellular metabolic process. But it has been known that an undesirable signal distortion in 2D heteronuclear correlation study, due to 13C-13C interaction, hampers an analysis of the coupling information. Recently, we proposed J-scaled distortion-free heteronuclear single-quantum coherence (HSQC) sequence which provides a distortion-free 13C-13C coupling information with a selective resolution enhancement of JCC splitting. In this paper, we dicuss theoretical aspect and practical feature of J-scaled HSQC pulse sequence. The conceptual explanation of orgin of the signal distortion by 13C-13C coupling interaction and design of J-scaled HSQC through exemplified results are provided in brief.

  • As a follow-up of our previous studies on flow-induced forces on two identical nearby circular cylinders immersed in the cross flow at Re=100 and flow patterns past them,$^{(1,2)}$ we present Reynolds-number effects on the forces and patterns by further computing flows with Re=40, 50, 160. We consider all possible arrangements of the two circular cylinders in terms of the distance between the two cylinders and the angle inclined with respect to the main flow direction. Collecting all the numerical results obtained, we propose contour diagrams for mean force coefficients and their rms of fluctuation as well as for flow patterns and Strouhal number for each Re. These diagrams shed light on a comprehensive picture on how the wake interaction between the two cylinders alters depending on Re.
