HisCoM-GGI: Software for Hierarchical Structural Component Analysis of Gene-Gene Interactions

  • Gene-gene interaction (GGI) analysis is known to play an important role in explaining missing heritability. Many previous studies have already proposed software to analyze GGI, but most methods focus on a binary phenotype in a case-control design. In this study, we developed "Hierarchical structural CoMponent analysis of Gene-Gene Interactions" (HisCoM-GGI) software for GGI analysis with a continuous phenotype. The HisCoM-GGI method considers hierarchical structural relationships between genes and single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), enabling both gene-level and SNP-level interaction analysis in a single model. Furthermore, this software accepts various types of genomic data and supports data management and multithreading to improve the efficiency of genome-wide association study data analysis. We expect that HisCoM-GGI software will provide advanced accessibility to researchers in genetic interaction studies and a more effective way to understand biological mechanisms of complex diseases.

A Comparison of Effects of Toddler's Temperament and Teacher-Toddler Relationship on Peer Interaction: Focusing on Gender Differences (영아의 기질, 영아-교사관계가 또래상호작용에 미치는 영향: 성별에 따른 차이를 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of toddler's temperament and toddler-teacher relationship on their peer interaction, focusing on gender differences. A total of 221 toddlers(122 boys and 99 girls) attending 16 child care centers in South Korea participated in this study. Each toddler was observed during a free-play period in the classroom over 4 sessions of 5 minutes, so a total of 20 minutes was measured. Two observers scored recorded observation scenes with two peer interaction criteria, including interaction initiation and interaction participation level. The main results of this study are as follows: First, there was a signigicant gender difference in peer interaction and toddler's temperament and toddler-teacher relationship. Second, the factor of toddler-teacher relationship significantly predicted the boys' peer interaction, while for the girls, the significant predictor was intentional control of temperamental factors. Further, implications for different approaches according to the gender difference of the affecting factor on toddlers' peer interaction have been discussed.

The Influence of Brand Reputation and Chronic Regulatory Focus on the Non-similar Brand Extension (브랜드명성과 성향조절초점이 비유사 브랜드확장에 미치는 영향)

  • In this study, we intended to show the interaction effect between brand reputation and chronic regulatory focus, and intended to show mederatory effect as an interaction as well as the main effect of two variable. To this end, Pulmuone(a high level of brand reputation) and Green(a low level of brand reputation) as parent brand and cosmetics as extention product were selected. The results of the study are as follows: The first, on brand extension evaluation, a high level of brand reputation was more positive than a low level of brand reputation. The second, brand extension evaluation was mere positive in the promotion focus group than in the prevention focus group. The third, In case of high level of brand reputation, there was no significant differences between the prevention focus group and the promotion focus group in brand extension evaluation. On the other hand, low level of brand reputation, there was significant differences between two variables. Therefore, we found the interaction effect between promotion focus group and prevention focus group.

The Effect of Digital Signage and Smart Media Convergence on Memory and Attitude According to the Level of Engagement and Interactivity (디지털 사이니지와 스마트 미디어 융합이 인게이지먼트와 상호작용성 수준에 따라 기억과 태도에 미치는 영향)

  • This study examined how the memory effect and the brand attitude effect differ according to the interaction (high / low) and the involvement (high / low) of digital signage. The two-way MANOVA analysis using SPSS 18 was used for the empirical analysis. The results of this study are as follows: First, GRM is recalled if the level of interactivity and inffence of digital signage is low, but if both conditions are high, ARM recalls. Second, if the interaction of digital signage is low and the level of engagement is high, a lot of memory information is formed that forms the overall attitude of the product. In addition, even though the interaction level is high and the engagement is low, the attitude cognitive response through the overall evaluation is formed rather than the attribute information. Third, brand attitude was positive when interactivity level was high and engagement level was high.

  • Nowadays, as many robots are developed for desktop, users interact with the robots based on speech. However, due to technical limitations related to speech-based interaction, an alternative is needed. We designed this research to design a robot that interacts with the user by using unconditional reflection of biological signals. In order to apply bio-signals to robots more effectively, we evaluated the robots' overall service evaluation, perceived intelligence, appropriateness, trustworthy, and sociability according to the degree of the robot's embodiment level and the response speed of the robot. The result showed that in terms of intelligence and appropriateness, 3D robot with higher embodiment level was more positively evaluated than 2D robot with lower embodiment level. Also, the robot with faster response rate was evaluated more favorably in overall service evaluation, intelligence, appropriateness, trustworthy, and sociability than the robot with slower response rate. In addition, in service evaluation, trustworthy, and sociability, there were interaction effects according to the robot's embodiment level and the response speed.

A numerical study on ice failure process and ice-ship interactions by Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics

  • In this paper, a Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method is extended to simulate the ice failure process and ice-ship interactions. The softening elastoplastic model integrating Drucker-Prager yield criterion is embedded into the SPH method to simulate the failure progress of ice. To verify the accuracy of the proposed SPH method, two benchmarks are presented, which include the elastic vibration of a cantilever beam and three-point bending failure of the ice beam. The good agreement between the obtained numerical results and experimental data indicates that the presented SPH method can give the reliable and accurate results for simulating the ice failure progress. On this basis, the extended SPH method is employed to simulate level ice interacting with sloping structure and three-dimensional ice-ship interaction in level ice, and the numerical data is validated through comparing with experimental results of a 1:20 scaled Araon icebreaker model. It is shown the proposed SPH model can satisfactorily predict the ice breaking process and ice breaking resistance on ships in ice-ship interaction.

  • This paper provides an integrated view on human and system interaction in advanced and automated systems, which adopting computerized multi-functional artifacts and complicated organizations, such as nuclear power plants, chemical plants, steel and semi-conduct manufacturing system. As current systems have advanced with various automated equipments but human operators from various organizations are involved in the systems, system safety still remains uncertain. Especially, a human operator plays an important role at the time of critical conditions that can lead to catastrophic accidents. The knowledge on human error helps a risk manager as well as a designer to create and control a more credible system. Several human error theories were reviewed and adopted for forming the integrated perspective: gulf of execution and evaluation; risk homeostasis; the ironies of automation; trust in automation; design affordance; distributed cognition; situation awareness; and plan delegation theory. The integrated perspective embraces human error theories within three levels of human-system interactions such as affordance level, psychological logic level and trust level. This paper argued that risk management process should dealt with human errors by providing (1) reasoning improvement; (2) support to situation awareness of operators; and (3) continuous monitoring on harmonization of human system interaction. This approach may help people to understand risk of human-system interaction failure characteristics and their countermeasures.

Measuring the Moderating Effect of Food Involvement in the Relationship between Food Choice Motives and Fruit Consumption (음식 선택 동기와 과일 소비의 관계에서 음식 관여의 조절효과 평가)

  • The principal objective of this study was to assess the effects of food involvement moderating the relationship between food choice motives, including health concerns, weight control and ethical concern, and fruit consumption. A total of 290 questionnaires were completed. Moderated regression analysis was utilized to assess the relationships among variables. The results of the study showed that the results of data analysis also indicated good model fit. The direct effects of health concerns on fruit consumption were statistically significant in Models 1 and 2. However, the direct effects of ethical concern on fruit consumption were statistically significant in Model 3. As had been expected, the interaction of ethical concerns and food involvement exerted a significant effect on fruit consumption in Model 3. However, the interaction of health concern and food involvement, as well as weight control and food involvement exerted no significant effects on fruit consumption. Moreover, ethical concerns about fruit consumption exerted a significant negative effect at the low level and a positive effect at the high level of food involvement, except in cases in which the level of food involvement was medium. The results of this study revealed that fruit marketers should attach importance to the interaction effect of food involvement in order to better understand the elements of market demand and customer loyalty.

Exploring the Effects of Grouping by Learning Style of Gifted-Student in Science on the Verbal Interaction (과학 영재들의 학습양식에 따른 소집단 구성이 언어적 상호작용에 미치는 영향 탐색)

  • The importance of small group activity has recently been emphasized in the gifted education in science because of the increased needs to foster the human resources that could explore through the communication and collaboration. In this study, we investigated the characteristics of the verbal interaction according to the learning styles of the gifted-students in science in the small group activity and examined how learning style affected the interaction within a group in order to seek an effective grouping strategy. The competition, cooperative, and dependent students with learning style in the small group 1 and the cooperative, cooperative, dependent students in the small group 2 were assigned by the 6 science high school students. The analyses of the results revealed that the small group 1 showed the asymmetric interaction of the low level, whereas the small group 2 showed the symmetric interaction of the high level. In other words, the frequencies of in-depth interaction in the small group 2 were higher than those in the small group 1, and also students in the small group 2 were equally involved in the activity rather than the small group 1. These results suggested that the grouping by the students' learning styles in the small group activity should affect significantly the participation decision in activity and the level of verbal interaction. Educational implications of theses findings were discussed.
