The goal of many researchers in the field of structural engineering is to reduce both damage to building structures and discomfort of their inhabitants during strong motion seismic events. The present paper reports on analytical work conducted with this aim in mind as a prior research of experimental study. A four-story, 6.4 m tall, laboratory model of a building is employed as a example structure. The laboratory structure has graphite epoxy columns and each floor is equipped with a chevron brace that serves to resist inter-story drift with the installation of a magnetorheological (MR) damper. An artificial excitation has been generated with a robust range of seismic characteristics. A series of numerical simulations demonstrates that an optimized fuzzy controller is capable of robust performance for a variety of seismic base motions. Optimization of the fuzzy controller is achieved using multi-objective genetic algorithm(MOGA), i.e. NSGA-II. Multiple objective functions are used in order to reduce both peak and root-means-squared displacement and accelerations at the floor levels of the building.

Excitation and system identification are carried out for a full-scale five-story structure to obtain fundamental data which will be used for the design of viscoelastic dampers, The hybrid mass driver(HMD) installed on the fifth floor was employed as external exciter to provide excitation for the building, Each floor response was measured and processed to find out where and how the viscoelastic dampers are located and designed. The sine-sweep and white noise loadings were applied to the structure by the HMD to obtain dynamic characteristics such as natural frequencies, damping ratios, and modes, The identified building was experimentally investigated again with the designed viscoelastic dampers installed at inter-stories to obtain the response behavior in the companion paper.
Though super-highrise apartment buildings have become increasingly widespread, their negative effects on the residents have not been investigated sufficiently and practically in domestic situations. In particular, the foreign discussion on residential environment and the residents' health can not be applied domestically due to physical or cultural differences including physical residential space structure and life-style. Therefore, this research aims to investigate the inter-relationship between residence in super-highrise apartments and their residents' health, to reveal the problems which exist. for this purpose, a parental-response health evaluation - questionnaire on children's physical, emotional and behavioral characteristics was given to a total of 336 persons. The health of the children living in super-highrise apartments is evaluated to be good, and is related to what floor of the apartment building people live on. It is represented that the higher the story, the better the children's health. However, there is no meaningful difference according to various evaluation items including the frequency and type of disease, emotional health, behavioral characteristics, etc. Therefore, it cannot be said that children's health shows no meaningful differences depending on what floor they live on. The parents dwelling on higher floors of the building display a more careful educational attitude. This is because they feel anxious about the children's safety as shown by the fact they live on higher stories.
In this study, the seismic performance of RC school buildings which were not designed according to earthquake-resistance design code were evaluated by using response spectrum and push-over analyses. The torsional amplification effect due to plan irregularity is considered and then the efficiency of seismic retrofitting methods such as RC shear wall, steel frame, RC frame and PC wing wall was investigated. The analysis result indicate that the inter-story drift concentrated in the first floor and most plastic hinge forms at the column of the first story. Among the retrofitting methods, the PC wing wall has the highest seismic performance in strength and story drift aspect. Especially, it can make building ductile behavior due to the concentrated inter-story drift at the first column hinge is distributed overall stories. The axial force, shear force and moment magnitude of existing elements significantly decreased after retrofitting. However, the axial and shear force of the elements connected to the additional retrofitting elements increased, and especially the boundary columns at the end of the retrofitting shear wall should be reinforced for assuring the enhancement of seismic performance.
This paper investigates the seismic response of buildings equipped with Self-Centering Energy Dissipating (SCED) braces. Two-dimensional models of 3, 6, 12 and 16-story SCED buildings considering both material and geometric nonlinearities are investigated by carrying out pushover and nonlinear time-history analyses. The response indicators of the buildings are studied for weight-scaled ground motions to represent the Design Basis Earthquake (DBE) level and the Maximum Considered Earthquake (MCE) event. The fragility curves of the buildings for two Immediate Occupancy (IO) and Life Safety (LS) performance levels are developed using Incremental Dynamic Analysis (IDA). Results of the nonlinear response history analyses indicate that the maximum inter-story drift occurs at the taller buildings. The mean peak inter-story drift is less than 2% in both hazard levels. High floor acceleration peaks are observed in all the SCED frames regardless of the building height. The overall ductility and ductility demand increase when the number of stories reduces. The results also showed the residual displacement is negligible for all of case study buildings. The 3 and 6-story buildings exhibit desirable performance in IO and LS performance levels according to fragility curves results, while 12 and 16-story frames show poor performance especially in IO level. The results indicated the SCED braces performance is generally better in lower-rise buildings.
This paper focuses on a recently proposed asymmetric base-isolation coupling control system (ABiCS) for the vibration control of adjacent twin buildings. The ABiCS consists of inter-story diagonal dampers, a connecting damper between the two buildings, and a seismic isolation device at the base floor of one building. To investigate the control characteristics of ABiCS, a parametric study was performed by numerically simulating the 20-story twin buildings. In the parametric study, the control capacities of the inter-story diagonal dampers, connecting damper, and seismic isolation device were considered as varying parameters. The parametric study results indicate that the connecting damper between the two buildings reduces the responses of both buildings only at optimal or near-optimal capacity. In addition, adjusting the stiffness of the base isolation is found to be the most effective method for improving seismic performance and achieving cost-effectiveness. Accordingly, we presented a scenario-based performance improvement approach in which reducing the stiffness of the base isolation device could be an effective technique to improve the seismic performance of both buildings. However, note that checking the maximum allowable displacement of the base isolation device is essential.

PM10, NOx, and $O_3$ were measured at six locations, of which each three is horizontally and vertically distributed respectively, in an apartment complex around the heavily traffic road. Those were measured seven times a day with two hours interval starting from 8 o'clock in the morning for 15 days during May 2005 $\sim$ September 2005. PM10 and NOx showed high concentrations in rush hours while low concentrations in midday due to the direct emissions from automobiles in operation. Temporal variations of 01 showed very much similar trend appeared in normal urban atmospheres. The spatial distributions of PM10, NOx and $O_3$ showed that almost all of concentrations were higher in a row of Roadside > Surface at 130 m apart from the road > Surface at 230 m apart from the road > 3rd floor of apartment building > 15th floor of apartment building > 27th floor of apartment building. Model equations, which can project spatial concentration distributions, were constructed by combining the horizontal and the vertical linear regression equations derived from six mean values corresponding to six measuring locations. According to inter-comparison of PM10, NOx, and $O_3$ with the constructed model equations, concentration gradients were higher in a row of Vertical direction of NOx > Vertical direction of PM10 > Horizontal direction of NOx > Horizontal direction of PMIO > Vertical direction of $O_3$ > Horizontal direction of $O_3$. Why concentration gradient of particulate PM10 is lower than that of gaseous NOx is in question, and should be studied.

Seismic isolation technique has been applied mainly in low rise buildings and its seismic performance was satisfactory during Kobe Earthquake. However, in the case of medium and/or high-rise buildings, mid-story isolation could be more technically feasible than base isolation to reduce earthquake forces. In this paper, the seismic effectiveness of mid-story isolation in medium and/or high-rise shear building as well as low rise shear building was evaluated analytically. After verifying the effectiveness of mid-story isolation technique, this method also applied in residential-commercial building. It was found that mid-story isolation, that is isolation between upper residential area and lower commercial area, could reduce inter-story drift and floor shear forces comparing to the conventional fixed base.

In this paper, we analyzed the effect by building materials in the case of floor cell design and the penetration loss value by material in each frequency bands through an experiment in high building. Specially, the penetration loss measured about interference signal that is received to direct path, interference signal and flowed in slant path. Also, we analyzed system performance according to path of standard Cell received interference signal.
This study intended to examine the changes of residential building characteristics in period classification. The results of this study are as follows: During Joseon dynasty, it is judged that the social changes in the ideology of ruling classes did not directly affect the traditional residential style. The mid period and latter period of Joseon, it is changed toward horizontal and practical residential layout in place of confucian courtesy based style. During port opening period, the traditional residential style was remodeled through addition of glass panes to inter-chamber floor in tune with the influx of modern materials and ideologies like glass or cement etc. The Japanese ruling era of Korea period, the modern housing style of room separation type was settled.
