Combination of mental stress task with noise background is a traditional tool employed in psychophysiology. However, intensity of background noise is a factor affecting both performance on test and psychophysiological responses associated with stress evoked by mental load in noisy environment. In the current study on 7 subjects we analyzed the influence of white noise (WN) intensity (55, 70, and 85 dB[A] ) on psychophysiological responses during word recognition test performed on noise background. There were recorded following physiological variables: electrodermal activity (EDA) , namely, skin conductance level (SCL), skin conductance response (SCR) amplitude (SCR-A), rise time and total number of SCRs (N-SCR); cardiovascular activity, e.g., heart rate (HR), respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) index, pulse transit time (PTT), finger pulse volume (PV), skin temperature (SKT) and respiratory activity, such as respiration rate (RESP-R) and inspiration wane amplitude (RESP-A) during baseline resting state and 40 s long performance on 3 similar Korean word recognition tests with different WN intensity (55, 70, and 85 dB). Electrodermal responses (SCR-A, SCL, N-SCR) demonstrated gradual increment with increased intensity of noise, and this increase of response magnitude with higher intensity of noise was typical also for r skin temperature (phasic SKT decrease) and pulse volume (phasic and tonic PV decrease). However, some cardiovascular and respiratory responses did not exhibit same tendency of gradual increase of reactivity , namely HR, as well as RESP-R and RESP-A showed decrement of response magnitudes. Important finding in terms of cardiovascular reactivity was that 55 and 70dB evoked similar profiles, while 85dB WN resulted in significantly different profile of reactions, suggesting that there exists a threshold level after which intensive auditory stimulation elicits psychophyslological responses pattern of different quality. There are discussed potential autonomic mechanism involved in mediation of observed physiological responses.
The objective of this study is to estimate the level of exposure of traffic-related air pollutants (TRAPs) on the pedestrians in Seoul area. The road network's link-based pollutant emission was calculated by using a set of mobile source emission factor package and associated activity information. The population information, which is the number of pedestrian, was analyzed in conjunction with the link-based traffic emissions in order to quantify exposure level by selected 23 spots. We proposed the Exposure Intensity, which is defined by the amount of traffic emission and the population, to quantify the probability of exposure of pedestrian. Link-based traffic NOx and PM emissions vary by up to four times depending on the location of each spot. The Hot-spots is estimated to be around 1.8 times higher Exposure Intensity than the average of the 23 selected spots. The information of Exposure Intensity of each spot allows us to develop localized policies for air quality and health. Even in the same area, the Exposure Intensity over time also shows a large fluctuation, which gives suggestions for establishing site-specific counter-measures.

An assessment of typhoon intensity predictability of numerical models was conducted to develop the typhoon intensity forecast guidance comparing with the RSMC-Tokyo best track data. Root mean square error, box plot analysis and time series of wind speed comparison were performed to evaluate the each model error level. One of noticeable fact is that all models have a trend of error increase as typhoon becomes stronger and the Global Forecast System showed the best performance among the models. In the detailed analysis in two typhoon cases [Danas (1324) and Haiyan (1330)], GFS showed good performance in maximum wind speed and intensity trend in the best track, however it could not simulate well the rapid intensity increasing period. On the other hand, ECMWF and Hurricane-WRF overestimated the typhoon intensity but simulated track trend well.

High-performance liquid chromatography(HPLC) and fluorescence derivatization were applied for a trace-level N-nitrosodimethylamine(NDMA) analysis of water samples. Fluorescence intensity was optimized with the excitation wavelength of 340 nm and the emission wavelength of 530 nm. pH adjustment after denitrosation was necessary to get a maximum intensity at pH between 9 and 12. Maximum intensity was found with a dansyl chloride concentration of 330 to 500 mg/L. Percentile error in the water sample analyses through solid phase extraction was 12-162% and 6-23% for the lower concentration level(10-200 ng/L NDMA) and the higher level(100-1000 ng/L NDMA), respectively, showing more discrepancy in lower level. However, the average ratios of estimated NDMA to the standard NDMA were close to 1 for both concentration ranges, presenting this HPLC method could detect from tens to hundreds nanograms NDMA per liter. Accurate determination of NDMA, which was injected to a wastewater effluent, revealed the selectivity of fluorescence derivatization for the target compound(NDMA) in the presence of complex interfering compounds. The HPLC with fluorescence derivatization may be applicable for determining NDMA of water and wastewater samples fur various research purposes.
Internal cracks in products are invisible and can lead to fatal crashes or damage. Since X-rays can penetrate materials and be attenuated according to the material’s thickness and density, they have rapidly become the accepted technology for non-destructive inspection of internal cracks. This paper presents a robust crack filter based on local gray level variation and multiscale analysis for automatic detection of cracks in X-ray images. The proposed filter takes advantage of the image gray level and its local variations to detect cracks in the X-ray image. To overcome the problems of image noise and the non-uniform intensity of the X-ray image, a new method of estimating the local gray level variation is proposed in this paper. In order to detect various sizes of crack, this paper proposes using different neighboring distances to construct an image pyramid for multiscale analysis. By use of local gray level variation and multiscale analysis, the proposed crack filter is able to detect cracks of various sizes in X-ray images while contending with the problems of noise and non-uniform intensity. Experimental results show that the proposed crack filter outperforms the Gaussian model based crack filter and the LBP model based method in terms of detection accuracy, false detection ratio and processing speed.
This study aims to investigate the differences in burnout, emotional labor strategies, affect intensity, and emotional clarity based on combinations of level of mindfulness and compassion. To achieve this, a total of 137 mental health professionals participated in this study, and they were classified into four groups based on their level of mindfulness and compassion using cluster analysis. Then, the differences among the groups were compared. The results of the multivariate analysis of covariance(MANCOVA) or multivariate analysis of variance(MANOVA) controlling for career experience, showed that the group with high levels of both mindfulness and compassion had the highest levels of positive affect intensity, emotional clarity for self and others, and genuine expression, while having the lowest levels of negative affect intensity, surface acting, and burnout. In comparison to the group with high levels of both mindfulness and compassion, the group with high or low level of either mindfulness or compassion had both positive and negative affect intensity at higher or lower levels. Additionally, they showed lower emotional clarity for self and others, and genuine expression. Conversely, they showed higher levels of surface acting and burnout. The group with low levels of both mindfulness and compassion experienced low levels of positive affect intensity and high levels of negative affect intensity. They also had the lowest levels of emotional clarity for self and others and genuine expression. In addition, they showed that the highest levels of surface acting, and burnout. Based on the results, the study discussed the balanced development of mindfulness and compassion to prevent burnout of professionals in the human service field, including mental health professionals. The implications and limitations of this study were further analyzed in the discussion section, including the direction for future research.

The influences of the deep-level concentration of p-type Si substrates on the optical properties of nano-porous silicon (PS) are investigated by deep level transient spectroscopy (DLTS) and photoluminescence (PL). Utilizing a Si substrate with Fe contaminations significantly enhanced the PL intensity of PS. All the PS samples formed on Fe-contaminated silicon substrates had stronger PL yield than that of reference PS without any intentional Fe contamination but the emission peak is not significantly changed. For the PS 1000 sample with Fe contamination of 1,000 ppb, the maximum PL intensity showed about ten times stronger PL than that of the reference PS sample. From PL and DLTS results, the PL efficiency strongly depends on the Fe-related trap concentration in Si substrates.

Noble metal silicides are widely used in silicon based microelectronic and optoelectronic devices. Among them, as compared to other silicides, structural and electronic properties of platinum silicide (PtSi) are found to be less sensitive to change in its dimensions. PtSi is known to overcome the junction spiking problems of Al-Si contacts. Present study is regarding the spatial evolution of platinum silicide in Pt/SiOx/Si. Scanning photoelectron emission microscopy (SPEM) was used for this purpose. SPEM images were obtained for pristine samples and after an annealing at $500^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr. Core-level spectra were recorded at different points in SPEM images contrasted by the intensity of Pt 4f7/2. Both Pt 4f and Si 2p spectra reveal the formation of PtSi after annealing. However, in contrast to earlier reports, PtSi formation is found to be non-uniform confirmed by the SPEM images and from the core level spectra taken at different intensity points.

In this paper, we examine the role of emotional acoustic cues including both prosody and voice quality parameters for the modification of a word sense. For the extraction of prosody parameters and voice quality parameters, we used 60 pieces of speech data spoken by six speakers with five different emotional states. We analyzed eight different emotional acoustic cues, and used a discriminant analysis technique in order to find the dominant sequence of acoustic cues. As a result, we found that anger has a close relation with intensity level and 2nd formant bandwidth range; joy has a relative relation with the position of 2nd and 3rd formant values and intensity level; sadness has a strong relation only with prosody cues such as intensity level and pitch level; and fear has a relation with pitch level and 2nd formant value with its bandwidth range. These findings can be used as the guideline for find-tuning an emotional spoken language generation system, because these distinct sequences of acoustic cues reveal the subtle characteristics of each emotional state.
Background: Herbicides such as glyphosate, paraquat, and 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid have been reported to cause adverse side effects through production of reactive oxygen species. However, there were no data representing the adverse effects of a mixture herbicide usage in farmers, especially the changes in oxidative marker and antioxidant defense. This study aimed to determine the urinary malondialdehyde (MDA) and glutathione (GSH) level in farmers using mixed herbicides. Methods: Ninety-three farmers were recruited, and two spot urine samples (before and after work) were collected. The urinary MDA level was evaluated by thiobarbituric acid reactive substance assay, and the urinary GSH level was determined using the enzymatic recycling method. Results: Sixty-two percent of the participants were men, and 59% of the participants worked in a farm for 20-40 years. The common combinations of herbicide usage were glyphosate with 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (36.5%). There was no significant difference between pre- and post-work urinary MDA and GSH levels among the 3 groups of herbicides. However, the urinary MDA levels in farmers using the combination of glyphosate and paraquat were significantly higher than those found in farmers using glyphosate alone. The associated factors with changes in MDA levels found that the exposure intensity index (B = 0.154), the cumulative exposure intensity index (B = 0.023), and wearing gloves while working (B = -2.347) were found to be significantly associated with MDA level. Conclusion: The results suggest that the combined use of glyphosate and paraquat caused a significant increase in urinary MDA levels. Moreover, intensity of exposure to herbicide and wearing gloves were associated with the level of MDA.
