  • This paper proposes a hybrid approach involving Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Bacterial Foraging (BF) for tuning the PID controller of an AVR. Recently the social foraging behavior of E. coli bacteria has been used to solve optimization problems. We first illustrate the proposed method using four test functions and the performance of the algorithm is studied with an emphasis on mutation, crossover, variation of step sizes, chemotactic steps, and the life time of the bacteria. Further, the proposed algorithm is used for tuning the PID controller of an AVR. Simulation results are very encouraging and this approach provides us a novel hybrid model based on foraging behavior with a possible new connection between evolutionary forces in social foraging and distributed non-gradient optimization algorithm design for global optimization over noisy surfaces.

  • This paper presents a mathod of reducing hunting size or steady state error occurred in the output signals via regulating the PID controllers gains. The PID controllers are widely used in industrial processes. Such processes have several inherent features like continuous operation, fixed set value, and difficulty in applyirty test signals. Thus, this paper suggests fuzzy rules of reducing hunting magnitude or steady state error using output signals only. Such an intelligent tuning technique utilizes both the experts, experience and control engineers' theortical background. For two kinds of systems such as temperature or DC motors speed control, we showed the validity of proposed method in this paper.

  • The stewart platform manipulator proposed by stewart is the parallel manipulator which is composed of several independent actuators connecting the upper plate with the base plate and capable of executing a six degree of freedom motion. The manipulator has a structure of a closed loop form, and provides better load-to-weight ratio and ratio and rigidity than a serial manipulator with an open loop form. Moreover, the manipulator has high positional accuracy because position errors of actuators are not additive. Because of these advantages, this manipulator is widely used in many engineering applications such as a driving simulator, a tool of machining center, a force/torque sensor and so on. When this Stewart platform manipulator is controlled in joint space, it is difficult to design a controller using an analytic method due to nonhnearity and unknown parameters of actuators. Therefore, a PID controller is often used because of easiness in applications. To find the PID control gain, a trial-and-error method is generally used. This method is time-consuming, and does not guarantee a optimal gain. Thus, this paper proposes a GA-PID controller which selects an optimal PID control gain using genetic algorithms. And this proposed controller is evaluated experimentally and shows acceptable performance.

  • This paper presents the design and development of an optimal fuzzy logic controller (FLC) for a laser tracking system. An optimal intelligent fuzzy logic controller was founded on integral criterion of the fuzzy models and three-dimensional fuzzy control. Research had been also concentrated on the methods for multivariable fuzzy models for the purposes of real-time process. Simulation results have shown remarkable tracking performance of this fuzzy PID controller.

  • In this paper, we propose a feedback adaptive controller which need not adjustment of the scale factor. Numerical examples are included to illustrate the procedure of a adaptive control and to show the performance of the control system. We can observe that the output of control system, converges toward the reference of response.

  • Fuzzy controllers still remain ill-accepted in the control community. As a matter of fact, their design relies on a new relation between the material world and the scientists. Whereas some theoritical studies are carried out on this subject, experimentations on processes show what fuzzy techniques can bring to the control theory.
