An Intelligent Wireless Sensor and Actuator Network System for Greenhouse Microenvironment Control and Assessment

  • Purpose: As application-specific wireless sensor networks are gaining popularity, this paper discusses the development and field performance of the GHAN, a greenhouse area network system to monitor, control, and access greenhouse microenvironments. GHAN, which is an upgraded system, has many new functions. It is an intelligent wireless sensor and actuator network (WSAN) system for next-generation greenhouses, which enhances the state of the art of greenhouse automation systems and helps growers by providing them valuable information not available otherwise. Apart from providing online spatial and temporal monitoring of the greenhouse microclimate, GHAN has a modified vapor pressure deficit (VPD) fuzzy controller with an adaptive-selective mechanism that provides better control of the greenhouse crop VPD with energy optimization. Using the latest soil-matrix potential sensors, the GHAN system also ascertains when, where, and how much to irrigate and spatially manages the irrigation schedule within the greenhouse grids. Further, given the need to understand the microclimate control dynamics of a greenhouse during the crop season or a specific time, a statistical assessment tool to estimate the degree of optimality and spatial variability is proposed and implemented. Methods: Apart from the development work, the system was field-tested in a commercial greenhouse situated in the region of Punjab, India, under different outside weather conditions for a long period of time. Conclusions: Day results of the greenhouse microclimate control dynamics were recorded and analyzed, and they proved the successful operation of the system in keeping the greenhouse climate optimal and uniform most of the time, with high control performance.

Design of an Intelligent Streetlight System in USN

  • In this paper, we propose an intelligent streetlight system that has a complex sensor module of temperature, humidity, luminance and motion detection and controlled by the fuzzy logic based central monitoring system in order to get flexible and precise manipulation of the streetlight system in USN environment. The proposed streetlight system provides low power consumption and high efficiency by using sensed data from the complex sensor module, which were collected, processed, and analyzed by the fuzzy logic based central monitoring system. The performance of the proposed streetlight system is to be evaluated by a simulation study in terms of power savings and safety at the fields constructed as a test-bed under several suggested scenarios. Finally, we know that the proposed intelligent streetlight system can maximize the energy savings efficiently with the fuzzy logic based central monitoring system and selective remote dimming control by connecting it to the wireless ubiquitous sensor network (USN) using a Zigbee module.

  • Frequent false positives alarm from the Intelligent Selective Control System have raised significant concerns. These persistent issues have led to declines in operational efficiency and market credibility among agents. Developing a new model or replacing the existing one to mitigate false positives alarm entails substantial opportunity costs; hence, improving the quality of the training dataset is pragmatic. However, smaller organizations face challenges with inadequate capabilities in dataset collection and refinement. This paper proposes an automatic human pose data collection system centered around a human pose estimation model, utilizing camera-based sensor fusion techniques and edge devices. The system facilitates the direct collection and real-time processing of field data at the network periphery, distributing the computational load that typically centralizes. Additionally, by directly labeling field data, it aids in constructing new training datasets.

Development of Localization Sensor System for Intelligent Robots (지능로봇용 위치인식 시스템 개발)

  • A service robot can identify its own position relative to landmarks, the locations of which are known in advance. The main contribution of this research is that it gives various ways of making the self-localizing error smaller by referring to special landmarks which are developed as high gain reflection material and coded array associations. In this paper, the authors propose a set of indices to evaluate the accuracy of self-localizing methods using the selective reflection landmark and infrared projector, and the indices are derived from the sensitivity enhancement using 3D distortion calibration of camera. And then, the accurarcy of self-localizing a mobile robot with landmarks based on the indices is evaluated, and a rational way to minimize to reduce the computational cost of selecting the best self-localizing method. The simulation results show a high accuracy and a good performance.

  • In the intelligent integrated systems, the delay time must be reduced using highly parallel processors, as well as high throughput performance. In this paper, we propose a new concept for building 3D highly parallel processors using multi-layer printed wiring boards with built-in soldering heater (BISH-PWB). The proposed BISH is realized with the long and narrow cupper wiring pattern on the internal layer in the terminal pattern area. Based on the linearity of the cupper resistance vs. temperature, we can measure the BISH, temperature and its calorific value from the heater voltage and current measurements.   • Driving on irregular and inclined roads using agricultural machinery such as spraying machines or trucks in orchards causes farmer casualties associated with the overturning of agricultural machinery. In addition, the harm to agricultural workers caused by the excessive inhalation of the scattered pesticide frequently occurs during pest control processes. To address these problems, we introduced precision agricultural technology that could selectively spray pesticides only where the fruit is present by recognizing the presence or shape of the fruit in the orchard. In this paper, a 16-channel LIDAR (VLP-16) made of Velodyne was used to identify the shape of fruit trees. Solenoid valves were attached to the end parts of 12 nozzles of the orchard spraying machine for on/off control. The smart spraying machine implemented in this way was mounted on a vehicle capable of autonomous travel and performed selective control depending upon the shape of the fruit trees while traveling in the orchards. This is expected to significantly reduce the amounts of pesticides used in orchards and production costs.

  • Due to the miniaturization and multifunctionality of electronic devices, a surface mount technology in the form of molded interconnect devices (MID), which directly forms electrodes and circuits on the plastic injection parts and mounts components and parts on them, is being introduced to overcome the limitations in the mounting area of electronic components. However, when using plastic injection parts with low thermal stability, there are difficulties in mounting components through the conventional reflow process. In this study, we developed a process that utilizes induction heating, which can selectively heat specific areas or materials, to melt solder and mount components without causing any thermal damage to the plastic. We designed the shape of an induction heating Cu coil that can concentrate the magnetic flux on the area to be heated, and verified the concentration of the magnetic flux and the degree of heating on the pad part through finite element method (FEM). LEDs, capacitors, resistors, and connectors were mounted on a polycarbonate substrate using induction heating to verify the mounting process, and their functionality was confirmed. We presented the applicability of a selective heating process through magnetic induction that can overcome the limitations of the reflow method.

  • Selective Laser Sintering(SLS) method is one of Rapid Prototyping(RP) technologies. It has been used to fabricate desirable part to sinter powder and stack the fabricated layer. Since the sintering process occurs using infrared laser having high thermal energy, shrinkage and curling of the fabricated part occurs according to thermal distribution. Therefore, the fast scanning path generation is necessary to eliminate the factors of quality deterioration. In case of fabricating larger size parts, the unique scanning device and scanning path generation should be considered. In this paper, the development of SLS machines being capable of large size fabrication(800${\times}$1000${\times}$800 mm, W${\times}$D${\times}$H) will be addressed. The dual laser system and the unique scanning device have been designed and built, which employ CO2 lasers and dynamic 3-axis scanners. The developed system allows scanning a larger planar surface with the desired laser spot size. Also, to generate the fast scanning paths, adaptive path generation is needed with respect to the shape of each layer, and not simply x, y scanning, but the scanning of arbitrary direction should be enabled. To evaluate the suggested method, the complex part will be used for the experiment fabrication.

  • This work presents a 14b 200KS/s $0.87mm^2$ 1.2mW 0.18um CMOS algorithmic A/D converter (ADC) for intelligent sensors control systems, battery-powered system applications simultaneously requiring high resolution, low power, and small area. The proposed algorithmic ADC not using a conventional sample-and-hold amplifier employs efficient switched-bias power-reduction techniques in analog circuits, a clock selective sampling-capacitor switching in the multiplying D/A converter, and ultra low-power on-chip current and voltage references to optimize sampling rate, resolution, power consumption, and chip area. The prototype ADC implemented in a 0.18um 1P6M CMOS process shows a measured DNL and INL of maximum 0.98LSB and 15.72LSB, respectively. The ADC demonstrates a maximum SNDR and SFDR of 54dB and 69dB, respectively, and a power consumption of 1.2mW at 200KS/s and 1.8V. The occupied active die area is $0.87mm^2$.
