Research on Intelligent Combat Robot System as a Game-Changer in Future Warfare

  • The Army has presented eight game-changers for future warfare through 'Army Vision 2050,' including Intelligent Combat Robots, Super Soldiers, Energy Weapons, Hypersonic Weapons, Non-lethal Weapons, Autonomous Mobile Equipment, Intelligent Command and Control Systems, and Energy Supply Systems. This study focuses on Intelligent Combat Robots, considering them as the most crucial element among the mentioned innovations. How will Intelligent Combat Robots be utilized on the future battlefield? The future battlefield is expected to take the form of combined human-robot warfare, where advancements in science and technology allow intelligent robots to replace certain human roles. Especially, tasks known as Dirty, Difficult, Dangerous, and Dull (4D) in warfare are expected to be assigned to robots. This study suggests three forms of Intelligent Robots: humanoid robots, biomimetic robots, and swarm drones.

  • Purpose: This study focused on the societal changes associated with the entry into an ultra-aged society and the increase in single-person households. The core objective of this research is to investigate how social intelligent robots can bring about positive changes in the lives of individuals in single-person households and how such changes influence user satisfaction and the intention to use these robots. Methods: The study employed a cross-sectional analysis using a structural equation model. A survey designed to assess the impact of social intelligent robots' characteristics, such as perceived encouragement, empathy, presence, appearance, and attachment, on user satisfaction and usage intentions was conducted. Data were collected from a total of 335 users and analyzed using the structural equation model. Results: In the characteristics of social intelligent robots for single-person households, it was found that empathy, presence, and attachment significantly influenced satisfaction, while perceived encouragement, empathy, and attachment significantly influenced usage intentions. The research results indicate differences between enhancing user satisfaction and increasing the intention to use social intelligent robots. The findings suggest the essential need for a user-centric approach in the design and development of social intelligent robots. Additionally, it was observed that emotional support plays a crucial role in users' experiences with social intelligent robots. Conclusion: This study verified the impact of social intelligent robots on satisfaction and usage intentions based on users' experiences. It examined the influence of linguistic, visual, and personal characteristics of robots on user experiences, providing insights into how technological and human aspects of social intelligent robots interact to shape user satisfaction and usage intentions. Consequently, the study confirmed that social intelligent robots can bring positive changes to human life, emphasizing the necessity for the advancement of robot technology in a human-centric direction.

A Study on Intelligent Combat Robot Systems for Future Warfare

  • This study focuses on the development of intelligent combat robot systems for future warfare. The research is structured as follows: First, the introduction presents the rationale for researching intelligent combat robots and their potential to become game changers in future warfare. Second, in the context of the intelligent robot paradigm, this study proposes the need for military organizations to innovate their combat concepts and weapon systems through the effective utilization of Artificial Intelligence, Cognitive, Biometric, and Mechanical technologies. This forms the theoretical background of the study. Third, the analysis of intelligent robot systems considers five examples: humanoid robots, jumping robots, wheeled and quadrupedal pack robots, and tank robots. Finally, the discussion and conclusion propose that intelligent combat robots should be selected as game changers in military organizations for future warfare, and suggest further research in this area.

주요국의 지능로봇 정책 추진 현황과 시사점 (Status and Implications of Policies on Intelligent Robotics in Major Countries)

  • As artificial intelligence advances, major countries are actively promoting the use of intelligent robots to improve industrial productivity and enhance the quality of life. As robots become more capable of interacting with humans, they are being increasingly integrated into the human realm. Accordingly, major countries are actively implementing policies to lead intelligent robot technology and secure market leadership. We examine the status of policies related to intelligent robots in five countries: United States, China, Japan, Germany, and South Korea. These countries apply 1) government-led intelligent robot policies, 2) investments to secure core robot technologies and promote the convergence of artificial intelligence and robots, 3) programs for research and development on intelligent robots, 4) strengthened human-centered human-robot interaction and collaboration, and 5) ethics, stability, and reliability in the development and use of robot technologies. For Korea to compete with major countries and promote the intelligent robot industry, high-risk, high-performance innovation projects should be prioritized.

  • This paper proposes a algorithm for several mobile robots navigation. There are three parts in this algorithm. First part generates robots turning angle and moving distance for goal approaching, sencond part generates robots avoiding angle and avoiding distance for static obstacles or other robots and third part adjust between robots moving distance and avoiding distance. Most simulation results of this algorithm are very effective for several mobile robots traveling in unknown field.

  • Intelligent robots are being introduced and utilized to create new values in diverse fields such as medical care, national defense, education, and manufacturing. However, while the technical aspects of intelligent robots are spreading, the business side is lacking in recognition. The purpose of this study is to identify the factors affecting product innovation through the introduction of intelligent robots in enterprises. Among the six variables secured from the technology, organization, and environment framework, only perceived direct usefulness and competitive pressure have significant effects on product innovation. The results imply that the effects of introducing robots are still in their early stage from a business perspective.

  • In this paper, we deal with the performance evaluation method of user identification and user tracking for intelligent robots using face images. This paper shows general approaches for standard evaluation methods to improve intelligent robot systems as well as their algorithms. The evaluation methods proposed in this paper can be combined with the evaluation methods for detection algorithms of face region and facial components to measure the overall performance of face recognition in intelligent robots.

  • In this paper, we introduce visual contexts in terms of types and utilization methods for robust object recognition with intelligent mobile robots. One of the core technologies for intelligent robots is visual object recognition. Robust techniques are strongly required since there are many sources of visual variations such as geometric, photometric, and noise. For such requirements, we define spatial context, hierarchical context, and temporal context. According to object recognition domain, we can select such visual contexts. We also propose a unified framework which can utilize the whole contexts and validates it in real working environment. Finally, we also discuss the future research directions of object recognition technologies for intelligent robots.

지능형 로봇과의 공존에 대한 중학생들의 인식 조사 (A Study on Middle School Students' Perception on Intelligent Robots as companions.)

  • 미래 세대들은 지능형 로봇과 공존에 대해 어떻게 인식하고 있는지는 SW와 인공지능 교육을 어떻게 설계하고 진행해야 하는지에 중요한 요소가 된다. 본 연구는 중학생 1학년 214명을 대상으로 설문 조사를 진행하였으며 인식의 차이를 확인하기 위해 예상되는 문제 상황에 대해 문제를 해결하는 과정과 대상에 대한 감정이입 여부를 통해 살펴보았다. 분석 결과, 첫째, 형태가 명시적이지 않은 경우에는 상하관계로 인식하고 있었고 둘째, 인간 형태의 경우에는 지능형 로봇을 대상으로 인식하고 대상과 의사소통 할 준비가 되어있었다. 셋째, 다수가 지능형 로봇에 감정을 느끼고 있었다. 넷째, 단순 기계 형태의 로봇에 대해서는 막연한 불안함을 느끼고 있었다. 본 연구는 지능형 로봇에 관한 인식을 확인한 사례 연구로서의 의의를 지니며 향후 중학생뿐만 아니라 다양한 연령층을 대상으로 로봇과 공존하며 살아갈 수 있는가에 대한 인식에 대해 고민하고 정립하는 것이 필요하다.

도로 터널 스마트관리를 위한 디지털 트윈 및 지능형 레일 로봇 개발 (Development of Digital Twin and Intelligent Monorail Robot for Road Tunnel Smart Management)

  • The objective of this study was to create intelligent rail robots that are optimized for facility management and implement digital twin systems for smart road tunnel management. An autonomous surveillance system is formed by combining the sensing platform consisting of railing robots, fixed cameras and environmental detection sensors with the digital twin data platform technology for tunnel monitoring and early fire suppression. In order to develop mobile rail robots for fire extinguishing, we also designed and manufactured robots for extinguishing & monitoring and fire extinguishing devices, and then we examined the optimization of all parts. Our next step was to build a digital twin for road tunnel management by developing continuous image display system and implementing 3D modeling. After constructing prototypes, we attempted simulations by configuring abnormal symptom scenarios, such as vehicles fires. This study's proposal proposes high-accuracy risk prediction services that will enable intelligent management of risks in the tunnel with early response at each stage, using the data collected from the intelligent rail robots and digital twin systems.
