Stabilization of a High-Speed and Intelligent CNC System (고속 지능형 CNC 시스템의 안정화)

  • A high-speed and intelligent CNC system has been developed by Turbotek Co., Ltd. This paper presents the study for commercialization of the developed CNC system. In order to acquire stability and reliability of the developed CNC system, its hardwares and softwares ate improved. The CNC main unit is revised to a compact box-type CNC controller. Moreover, the integrated CNC main unit that has built-in and expandable I/O modules is also developed. Remote monitoring, fault diagnosis End NURBS interpolation functions are realized on the CNC system as software modules. Through these efforts, the developed CNC system can be loaded on machine tools successfully.

Diagnosing the Cause of Operational Faults in Machine Tools with an Open Architecture CNC

  • The conventional computerized numerical controller (CNC) of machine tools has been increasingly replaced by a PC-based open architecture CNC (OAC) that is independent of a CNC vendor. The OAC and machine tools with an OAC have led to a convenient environment in which user-defined applications can be efficiently implemented within a CNC. This paper proposes a method of diagnosing the cause of operational faults. The method is based on the status of a programmable logic controller in machine tools with an OAC. An operational fault is defined as a disability that occurs during the normal operation of machine tools. Operational faults constitute more than 70 percent of all faults and are also unpredictable because most of them occur without any warning. To quickly and correctly diagnose the cause of an operational fault, two diagnostic models are proposed: the switching function and the step switching function. The cause of the fault is logically diagnosed through a fault diagnosis system using diagnostic models. A suitable interface environment between a CNC and developed application modules is constructed to implement the diagnostic functions in the CNC domain. The results of the diagnosis were displayed on a CNC monitor for machine operators and transmitted to a remote site through a Web browser. The proposed diagnostic method and its results were useful to unskilled machine operators and reduced the machine downtime.

Developing a STEP-NC Prototype based on ISO 14649 Paradigm (ISO14649 패러다임에 입각한 STEP-NC 프로토타입 시스템 개발)

  • STEP-NC is the next generation CNC controller taking STEP-based data model as the interface scheme (or language) between CAM and CNC, and carrying out various intelligent functions. At the moment, efforts are being made worldwide to establish international standard for the new interface scheme formalized as ISO14649. As the new language is being established, increasing attention is being paid to the development of the new CNC. Korea STEP-NC is an integrated STEP-NC system taking ISO 14649 as an input, and carrying out various intelligent functions. It is composed of 5 modules: 1) Shop Floor Programming System (PosSFP), 2) Tool Path Generator (PosTPG), 3) Tool Path Viewer (PosTPV), 4) Man Machine Interface (PosMMI), and 5) CNC Kernel (PosCNC). Distinguished from other prototypes (of Europe and USA), the Korea STEP-NC is top-down designed, and bottom-up implemented comprehensively incorporating all the crucial components for realizing the full benefit of STEP-NC paradigm, without using any existing commercial CAD/CAM systems and CNC kernels. The Korea STEP-NC prototype was successfully demonstrated and evaluated in the ISO conventions Together with prototypes of Europe and USA, Korea STEP-NC will be used as a reference system fur the Triangular Conformance Test to be jointly carried out by ISO TC184 SC1, SC4, and IMS Project.

Development of an Open Architecture CNC and Integration with Intelligent Modules (개방형 CNC 개발 및 지능형 모듈 통합)

  • This study has been focused on the development of an open architecture CNC system and integration of core application technology for machine tool such as a remote monitoring/diagnosis system, NURBS interpolation, and cutting process simulation. To do this, we have developed a comprehensive CNC software including the basic HMI, screen editor, ASF, and visual builder. As a control hardware system for machine tool, the universal I/O module and CNC main unit have been developed. Then the remote monitoring/diagnosis system and NURBS interpolation have been implemented in the CNC software. The cutting simulation software will be used for enhancing the productivity of machine tools. Through a simulator and test bed, the whole technology has been verified.

  • With the increasing trend of making manufacturing system intelligent and autonomous, the introduction of robot-assist automation, like machine tending system for automated operation of CNC machine tools, is being actively carried out at many industrial sites. Most important part of this intelligent system to install machine tending system, is interface programming between the CNC machine tools and the industrial robot. Despite this importance, however, the machine tending system has many setup problems. it is necessary for difficult re-program of both controllers whenever a new CNC machine tool or robot is introduced. And, the helps of external engineers is required even though trivial changes due to the complex structure of the machine tending system. Authors of this paper introduces the integrated system of the interface between heterogeneous CNC machine tools and industrial robots. In addition, the digital twin implemented inside the machine tool controller enable shop-floor operators to change the interface programming easily. To implement this system, an integrated development environment for 1) an intelligent HMI platform that provide standardized interfaces to heterogeneous CNC machine tools and 2) a robot platform developing application software of various robots, was established. For easy un-tact environment, this paper explain the development of 3) a game-engine based web program of controlling and monitoring machine tending system remotely.

  • Interactive Measuring part Program Generating Tools (IMPPGT) realized on the FANUC 15MA using touch trigger probes and interactive macro functions os the CNC were developed for an intelligent measuring and inspection systems on the machine tools. Menu driven measuring and inspection functions of the IMPPGT were studied and implemented on the CNC through the macro executer and ROM writer. In order to automate measurement and inspection procedures in machine shops measuring G Code system was also proposed. Using the developed measuring G Code system on the machine tool untended measurement and inspection operation was able to be realized in FMS lines.

  • In this study, a DNC(Distributed Numerical Control) management system is designed that can directly control and manage hybrid CNC machine tools on real-time. And management software is developed to inter-communicate field informations with CNC controllers using an interface processor(Intelligent Multi Communication Board, IMCB). Especially, IMCB supports that DNC system sends and receives part program with CNC controllers in the form of real-time multi-tasking.

  • The purpose of this study is to establish a knowledge based system for education of CNC machining. The program is made based on various educational courses, teaching methodology and teaching medium etc. and has a good accessibility which can be used anywhere if computer is available. For the system, various variables according to materials, tools or shapes for machining are reviewed and analyzed. Also, the intelligent educational program is developed using Visual Basic language. It can be used to help trainees who want to refer cutting conditions for actual cutting process and also can be useful for beginner who wants to learn and to practice for CNC machining.
